Agree on a lot (Donnie Darko, Citizen Kane), or can see how someone else might not like it (Interstellar, GTWTW).

There's lots of fourth wall breaks in his movies then, especially recently, as there are lots of lines he writes that work narratively but also work as commentary to the audience or about the genre on another level. Or just stuff like how Stuntman Mike in Death Proof looks directly into the camera, smiles and winks. He also constantly does stuff that are clearly homages or calling back to certain movies that I think would probably qualify for what you've called a fourth wall break.

Oh here's one. I hated The Fighter. That scene of the singing in the car...awful scene imo. Completely unrealistic and took me even more out of the movie, when I barely cared about the characters and how by the numbers it was anyway. I like Russell's other movies though--didn't see Joy--including American Hustle. Hustle is a mess, and is just a bunch of scenes and big performances, with something of a through line since it's about cons, but I still liked it.

Also whoever mentioned Donnie Darko...if that qualifies sign me up. I hated that movie. All emo moodiness and just incoherent.

I wasn't going to bother defending any movies ITT, but I keep seeing Citizen Kane and nobody bothering to defend it. Even if you don't get how important Citizen Kane was historically (major movie told out of sequence and from different POVs/slants from each person recounting Kane's life, extensive use of deep focus photography, other people had used some of those techniques and other things like angles, or editing that we now take for granted like dissolves and fade ins, but this movie used them all together and in a way that helped push movies forward after bringing in sound initially made lots of them just filmed theater that was visually uninteresting or didn't combine the potential of sound/images together). Outside of people going in with huge expectations, I don't see how anybody can say that movie sucks, unless they hate black and white or some other arbitrary thing. It's got plenty of interpretive depth to it too.

The last shot of Inglourious Basterds ("I think this might just be my masterpiece" which then cuts to "directed by Quentin Tarantino" as the credits roll) would be another example, but I love that movie so much it doesn't bother me. The Hateful Eight is too mediocre for Quentin to be jerking himself off inside the actual movie.

True, I think QT thought it would be a big twist and very relevatory to have Samuel L Jackson who sort've is positioned as the likely hero before that scene, also to be revealed as one sociopathic fuk. It kind of was, but not in a very interesting way ultimately. There's lots of themes and stuff built up through the movie but it's hard to see what it all really amounts to by the ending.

I also wasn't a fan of the 70mm. Maybe other people will disagree but I didn't think it added much, and it was too cute. One of those cases where breaking the rules doesn't quite work, since the more widescreen a movie is usually that means the better it is for big, grand, epic entertainment as opposed to what Hateful 8 was, which is basically a parlor movie with lots of people stuck in one spot and tension between them all. I saw the movie twice in an equipped theater, and that whole "something else is going on" in the rest of the frame, which QT has talked about, is really overblown, I think.

Jackie Brown I liked fine the first time I saw it, but didn't love it because I expected something else. But I've grown to love it more and more over time. I doubt that will be true of the hateful 8 since I've seen and have liked plenty of westerns and mystery type movies, and this one was just....fine.

Exactly. He went on and on about his 70mm roadshow and how he was bringing back epics and the movie almost entirely took place in a cabin. The Master used it to much better effect, but I guess the more movies using large format the better. That's a big part of why the movie disappointed me, I was expecting the sweeping vistas and action that a 70mm film implies, maybe a chase scene or two, but we basically got a Civil War era Reservoir Dogs. That "something else going on" thing you mentioned has more to do with deep focus than super-high detail anyways, something large format actually has less of.

Edit: I am glad it put 70mm in the public conscience though, I overheard people talking about it as I walked out of the theater (I saw a 70mm showing, but I was so close to the screen I may as well have caught a digital screening with a better seat). Granted they had no idea what they were talking about, they commented on the movie's "high refresh rate", but I think that actually helps my point.

Not too surprised that the misc would hate the godfather given the old school pacing (inb4 someone names even a more recent but older movie like Die Hard), and how a big crosssection doesn't care for immigrants and accordingly would be sour on the immigrant experience which makes up a big part of the narrative.

Yes, I'd agree with that. As for the 70mm, the aspect ratio for the movie was like 2.76 or something ridiculous. The wider the frame, in theory, the more you can put into the corners or at various points. QT did it some, but nowhere near as much, or in as interesting of ways as he seemed to say he was doing. Everything, or at least the background stuff, does usually have to be in focus for that to work though, as you pointed out.

I really don't think the reason some miscers in here don't like The Godfather is in any way political, it's the pacing. Besides, immigration plays a much bigger role in part 2 than 1, which I don't think they would have watched if they didn't like the original.

Most of these been mentioned but....

1) Donnie Darko - weird for the sake of weird. Found it mediocre.
2) Requiem for a dream - depressing as phuk. Too bad for these 2 since Gylenhall has gotten a lot better since.
3) Anything by Quentin Tarantino except Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs. Find most of his stuff boring and overly gory.
4) Fight Club - Tries too hard to be "deep". Didn't hate it but didn't enjoy it.
5) V for Vendetta - Found it cliche and boring
6) Newest Star Wars - mediocre copy of New Hope
7) The Martian - Too long and drawn out plus too unrealistic. Seemed like it was trying to be a comedy.
8) Avengers - Marvel movies are overrated. Only one that was decent was winter soldier. Havent seen civil war.

Movies that didnt get rated high enough
1) Heat - DeNiro, Pacino, Kilmer...list goes on. One of the best movies of all time. Think it deserves even higher than where it is.
2) Collateral - Tom Cruise played one of the best villains i've seen
3) Training Day
4) Minority Report
5) Nightcrawler
6) Drive

Meh, I'm probably closer to the group you're talking about than the opposite but I love the movie. Citizen Kane's been chit on just as much and I don't see politics being the reason for that either.

No politics wouldn't be. But it's still a fantastic movie. I think most people chitting on the movie would do it for a few reasons, beyond expectations and how any movie being considered #1 or #2 would make people expect too much or hate, those being: 1) black and white, 2) old school kind of acting (even if it's really good for that period), and/or 3) IT WAS A SLED!?!?!!?!??!? LOL; In other words, for 3, they only got hooked into that narrative pull of the story and didn't bother to think much beyond that, or just did the symbolism of that and didn't think about the rest of what's going on in the movie. There's a reason critics and filmmakers both consistently recognize that movie all these years later, and it's not simply accepted wisdom.

Slightly surprised, pleasantly, that nobody has mentioned Casablanca yet.

I sense a strong preference, here.Night movies, LA, and rogue heroes much? I like to love all those movies, but I wouldn't majorly push Nightcrawler or Training Day, though I liked both a good bit. Those are more flawed imo. Minority Report is really underrecognized. Heat has gotten lots of online love lately and deservedly so. And Collateral is also a great movie. Miami Vice is definitely underrated too. I didn't like it at the time, but it's grown on me. Still, I'd say Collateral is the last Michael Mann masterpiece. I've still got to watch Blackhat, but not expecting that from the online talk and all.

I think it may just be self-selective. The people that wouldn't like them (oh this is a western? wtf...it's almost 3 hours? wtf it's pre-whatever date, etc.) don't bother, and the people that really like those genres or really like movies influenced by them obviously appreciate them, or at least won't come in and say....yeah, I think the Good The Bad and The 'Ugly sucks ass, and what was even worse was that Once Upon A Time in The West....

lol man, I like darker, deep movies that arn't simple. As in Heat, Collateral, Drive, Nightcrawler all have really deep characters who are far more than a "bad guy" or "good guy". They speak more to the brutality of life with doing whatever you can to get what you want. You really find yourself liking the characters, as phuked up as they are.

Also Agreed about miami vice. Really underrated. Think it could've been a lot better with better actors though.

Yeah man, really want to watch Blackhat but i'm in the same boat. Love Mann as a director but have not heard good things at all....sucks. Wish he would come out with some more quality stuff.

EDIT: Very much agreed on the bold.

For those that didn't like Donnie Darko take a look at this explanation. It's actually a serious mind fuk of a movie when you understand. I was the same the first time I watched it, but this puts it into perspective.

The Martian, Taxi Driver, and Citizen ****ing Kane.

The Martian had zero drama and was basically just Matt Damon reading from the book.

Taxi Driver does absolutely nothing to get me invested in Travis Bickle the reddit poster.

Citizen Kane is no doubt one of the most important movies in film history, but it's boring as ****.

Care to say more about why, mr. tinfoil?

additionally....I don't want to get into a major discussion about Taxi Driver, but do you think you're supposed to get hugely invested with Travis? I must've a bit more than you, but he's hardly supposed to be the John Wayne or Will Smith of the movie.

Repped. Colin Farrell feels like he only bothered to show up for 3-4 scenes max, and apparently Foxx was a big diva but I like him in most of the movie. I put some movie recs in my rep, on the chance you haven't seen them yet.

"The wizard of Oz"

Even as a kid I thought the movie was boring as hell. Like I was sitting in 2nd grade math class while watching it. Id rather had been drawing dicks on my trapper keeper.

I also love organized crime movies but I could never make it through "The Godfather" for some reason.

Civil war. Dont get me wrong, it had entertaining parts, but the vast majority was boring as hell.

Someday? Someday my dream will come? One night you will wake up and discover it never happened. It's all turned around on you. It never will. Suddenly you are old. Didn't happen, and it never will, because you were never going to do it anyway.
