Father of 4, never really spanked my kids so much as with my hands or belt, but I'm big on a pinch or ear/hair pull to correct a bad behavior. Was whipped constantly as a child/teen and never really saw the point as I was always doing something stupid an hour later. I don't judge those who do, like someone previously said physical pain in limited amounts I think really lets them understand when talking or "timeouts" aren't cutting it.

A spank as a last resort, sure. Prolonged spanking as a go to discipline? No. A spank on my child's butt to get him to stop to his attention works. A prolonged spanking does not work long term with my child I learned. My parents were old school (especially my father) and I got spanked and the belt. Even as old school as they where, they stopped spanking me as a kid when they realized it didn't work on me. This combined with my own parenting experience, leads me to believe prolonged spanking does not work.

Yeah, I was saying like 1 or 2 smacks. The worst beating i got was after I stole my dads van when I was 7 and convinced my 5 year old brother to drive it. He put it in neutral and took out the neighbors mailbox across the street. I think my dad reacted there rather than thought about it, but it didn't leave any scars or lasting effects on me. I know my kids may be different, but I'll play it by ear.

I have spanked my kids and will continue to spank them.

There is no "fine line" between spanking and abuse. Only an idiot can't see the clear difference. Spanking is a punishment or consequence in measured proportion to the infraction meant to deter future infractions and to reestablish hierarchy.

Read the news for five minutes and you'll see what abuse really looks like - kids getting starved to death, hit just because daddy stubbed his toe on a toy, shot with paintballs -- the list goes on. Don't come at me with this weak a$$, spanking is abuse, BS. I would literally run through fire for my kids and do evil things to anyone that would harm them. I was spanked as a kid and I love my parents deeply. 'nuff said.

EDIT: Plus, y'all post like people who spank, ONLY spank. Again, like I said, it's a measured response. I'm not gonna wack my kid for spilling a drink even after I told him three times to put it in the kitchen. Most likely that will get him hollered at and sat in a chair until I get tired. Give me lip when I'm telling him he can't have something is going to get his face tapped - why? Because it's an abrupt interruption of his back-talk to check his immediate attitude. Letting that kid talk to you like a bish and then taking his xbox when you get home doesn't have the same effect and they will back talk you again because the consequence is delayed so they might as well speak their mind.

Ive had to spank my 6 year old maybe twice and once of those times I shouldnt have. I dont believe its an effective parenting tool and have no intnetion of spanking in the future. The only reason anyone hits their kid is because they are mad. I bet 9 times out of 10 if a parent was to take an hour to calm down they would no longer feel like spanking.

There's better ways of discipline than spanking in today's world which is far more effective.

My niece and nephew lived with me for 3 years. Each time they needed discipline, I just took all their gadgets away.

3 days max and they'd have corrected what needed correcting and/or apologized.

I wouldn't rule it out but I can't say for sure if I would as I don't have any kids yet and different kids handle discipline differently. I was spanked and I dont think it had any negative effect on me. I would say it was effective punishment as I have never been in any trouble and turned into a pretty well adjusted adult.

I have two very well-behaved teenagers who I did spank when they were younger, if necessary. I was never like one of those parents who would just grab the kid by the arm and start wailing on them, and never would punish my kids if I was angry at them. This is the way it would go, typically.

1. Kid does something wrong and I see or hear about it.
2. I call him/her over and ask what did they do.
3. Kid answers
4. I ask "are you supposed to do that?"
5. Kid answers no
6. "Why shouldn't you do that?"
7 Short discussion on why, getting kid to think about the reason he/she has been told to do or not do whatever.
8. "What did I say would happen the next time you did that?"
9. "I would get a spanking (or timeout, or grounding, etc.).
10. "Ok, lay across my lap."
11. Appropriate level of spanking applied.

See, I think when you just get angry and spank or yell at a child, they are simply responding to the fact that you are hurting them or scaring them by yelling. I always thought that teaching right from wrong and making them think about the consequences of their actions, knowing why they were getting the punishment, was more effective.

This was my approach to being a father. It worked for me, but maybe my kids were just going to be well-behaved anyway.

my parents spanked me. it wasn't so much the pain as it was the thought/embarrassment of getting spanked in the first place that made the impact on me as a kid.

as i recall, they didn't really even do it all that hard.
