You can reason with a child from ages 1-2. Under 1, there is no reason you should be spanking them. Hell, they are barely learning to walk around 9-12 months. How much trouble can they get into?
I do spank, but it's for serious offenses that would affect her safety. Running out into traffic, wondering what would happen if she stuck a fork into a socket after repeated warnings and explanations, etc.
Things like being a miscreant? Then it's a consequence. Don't pick up your toys? Then I'll do it, and you lose them for 48 hours, etc. Don't listen to instructions? Then it's sit in a corner until you decide to do what you are told. She's learns there are consequences and rewards for actions. Also that it's better to take 1 minute to clean up her toys than to lose them for 2 days or sit in a corner for 5 minutes.
The hardest part is screaming and temper tantrums. Gotta learn to ignore it.

Start early and in a short time they will understand how poo works.
I will not be putting up with any screaming tantrums. Unacceptable behavior.

Lol at using these horrendously flawed research.

i'm not opposed to spanking or slapping, but closed fist and whipping w/ belts and chit is wrong imo. there are a lot of different ways to discipline a child that are way more effective than beating the chit out of them.

Hell lol at using your hand on a 8 year old.
I would seriously laugh if my parents tried to spank me with their hand.

My mom used to spank me with a wooden spoon and it hurt like hell. Then I started to build up the strength to hold in the pain, and I would react like one of these:

Would rustle the chit out of her.

Will I? I did! Until they were old enough to reason and understand time outs and chit like that - around age 5 or so. They're 11 and 8 now and I haven't even needed to raise my voice to them in two years. They actually listen and do what they're told now.
Cliffs: spank when they're young because they don't understand reason yet. Then once time-out and taking things away become effective, you don't need to spank anymore. Then after they know their boundaries of what they can and can't do, life is easy. Be consistent with your rules.

I was spanked as a child. My mother was spank (actually beaten on several occasions), as was pretty much every generation before her. I was probably the only one not to be hit with a closed fist or hit in the face. I have turned out fine. I've never been arrested or done anything that would warrant an arrest. My mother was the same way. I spank my children, who are nine and seven. I don't do it for every little infraction. It's the last straw after other parameters have broken down: warning, repeat warning, if severe enough infraction, spanking. Usually, it's a grounding from some electronic or withdrawing of some sort of treat. I would never hit my children in the face, nor with a closed fist. It's always been on the butt. I have popped their legs before, too, but never to the point where it's bruised. If I can cite five generations of family members having corporal punishment and not being arrested or having sociopath tendencies, I can refute 50 years of "scientific" studies indicating it's harmful to spank. My citation covers different eras, socioeconomic statuses, sexes, geographical locations, and education levels.
I think the key to corporal punishment is love. If you love your children, and show them that you do and that you want what's best for them, corporal punishment works. If you snatch them up, beat the hell out of them, ignore them, spend no time with them, never explain why you are getting on to them, never reward them for doing well (school/sports etc), and generally mistreat them, corporal punishment won't work because they won't care about the rules.

I'm for sure in the spanking/belt/whatever camp. My folks did it, within reason, and it helped shaped the man i am today. Many of the people I know who were never spanked or whatever grew up to be complete brats who are selfish af and don't care much about consequences. Many don't as well, but of my friends who are more entitled and whatnot, the large majority of them weren't spanked vs those that were spanked.
tl;dr: spank or no?
EDIT: Did your childhood punishments affect how you are going to punish your children? i.e. if you were spanked, did that cause you to spank or not spank your kids and vice versa

-verbally tell my daughter to stop
-tell her again in a much angrier tone( most of the time she Chris and stops because her feelings are hurt. I then explained why I had to do what I did and make her understand why her actions caused my response)
-verbally threaten physical punishment
-administer physical punishment
-have a talk after the crying about why she was punished and to get her to understand why her actions caused all of this.
Most times I find that she breaks down and cries after understanding that she's upset me and momma. It's normally enough to get her to stop before things get out of hand.

Nah, I wouldn't. They are children. You should be able to talk to and influence them through nonviolent actions. No need to escalate to physical correction.
Though I got my @ss beat my everyone in my family when I was a kid, I couldn't do it to my own child.

This is what happens when you don't give a kid a good smack. This is the result of just simply saying "no! dont do that, that's bad" it doesn't work

Once they are at the age of reasoning, you can put them in a timeout. Once that starts working, you can stop spanking. Once that stops working, you start taking privileges away - i.e. toys, TV, or whatever it may be that they want. Or "ground them" whatever.... After a while you can just tell them things and explain why they should or should not do something and by then, they should respect you and do what you say. That's the point where I've gotten to with my kids. It doesn't start out that way, it takes years.
Some never get there though because the parents were / are inconsistent somewhere along the line and the kids don't respect their parents.

Although I'm not against it per se, I don't think I'd actually pull the trigger on it simply because it's not exactly my style. I'm more of a mental, analytical, manipulative if you will type that would be certain I'd be able to extract the type of behavior from my kids that is prudent. That all being said lol no kids for me crew lulz I mean who are we kidding here.

You can speak in small words and they can understand.
What they cannot do so will is control their feelings, and actions. This is were you teach them through example because this is the age they start learning cultural norms. What is acceptable behavior and what isn't. If it's acceptable to lash out every time someone doesn't listen, then they learn that.
It takes a great deal of patience and learning when to fight and when it isn't worth it.
My daughter likes to jump on the coffee table. My wife yells at her, tries to reason with her, and she continues to do it. Even after a time out. Me? I pick up that damn table and throw it in the garage. One and done, no more jumping on the coffee table. Fight wasn't worth it. Things like that.
Then there are times when there is no reasoning, no time out, just constant yelling, crying and screaming. Kid throws one of those nuclear tantrums. If you are a parent, you would know they happen. You put them in a room, and walk away. Let them work it out of their system. They don't get what they want, and I don't have to deal with it.

I get spanked by belts, wooden spoon and cords when I was a kid until I was about 13. This mindset is prevalent among older generation parents. I can't speak the older generatiom Western parents but the methods are worse for the eastern parents.
There are benefits in this. They will behave with respect and won't make the same mistake again. They are also more likely to become real men and not a typical rebellious teenager.

Yes. And as my father would do, snap a belt for intimidation. My mom used to give me the old bar of soap in the mouth when I said said bad words or ill intent words. I can count on my fingers how many times I have swore in front of my parents. And I'm 25.
There needs to be some form of punishment that involves fearful consequence. Otherwise, the action will out-worth the punishment.
I will never do anything out of line, and will of course explain what they did wrong. My dad used mostly intimidation, and I will probably side more with that. You have to assert rules/boundries/limitations etc.
Always lol at the parents that send their kid to their room or take away their phone or computer. That ain't gonna do chit captain

Used to cop beatings when i was younger, I think the last time i got beat was when I was 12. I was a terrible kid
Both my brother and sister got it too. My brother was best behaved with my sister being the youngest and also the worst behaved and probably copped more beatings then me and my bro combined.
Mum used to try smack us but we would just laugh at her when she broke the wooden spoon on us, and then promptly go put on 2 pairs of pants in anticipation for the beating that's going to come when dad comes home LOL
Was always a smack with hand, next level was the belt. Only once have i got hit (whipped) with an electrical cable across the ass.
I have 2 kids now, and its hard. Every kid is different. They are 5 and 7 and are starting to understand alot more where i can just threaten of an impending smack and that is enough for them to listen etc . I haven't smacked them in a while because they are listening more. This is a good thing IMO
