Population + money

Some of your high school football teams have millions and millions of dollars invested into them, whereas high school teams in the UK practically have no funding whatsoever unless you go to some rich private school and even then it doesn't compare

If you have 400 million people to choose from or 4 million people to choose from where are you more likely to find the most elite athletes (or the most anything for that matter,good or bad)?

Opie specifically asked why in his thread title, people have just answered. That doesn't mean you can't be excited to see your teams win at things, just that there is a reasonable explanation and per capita is an interesting thing to keep an eye on as well since it provides a more balanced view.

The argument people are forgetting is that the best American athletes already play professionally in other sports that get paid way more money.

Imagine if all the NBA/NFL/NHL/MLB players competed in track, volleyball, shotput, rugby, rowing etc.

USA would crush even harder. I'm not even American, but they are basically sending their "B" and "C" teams to the Olympics. The Americans competing in those events are the men and women who couldn't make the top professional sports.

Basketball/hockey etc count for one medal. They bring the top 20 players for one medal and the hundreds of other professional players just train at their houses. I'm saying if they didn't have those sports they'd be competing in other events.

Doesn't mean it's good for their respective sports or that many will automatically go to the Olympics (they could have personal or contractual obligations preventing them).

Also, some professional athletes still lose to armatures. I guess the 3 pro-boxers (from Camaroon, Italy, and Thailand) who were in this year's Olympics all lost. If Europe was one combined country with a comparable population to the US they'd have far more medals.

US' olympic winnings honestly isn't very impressive at all when you take into consideration that they have the largest population of all western 1st world countries by far

Bolt is in a couple of events and of course he'd still dominate them. Overall, our best athletes are in the NFL and don't compete or care about the Olympics for the most part.

They have plenty keeping them from competing however, it's called contractual obligations and the fact that they just want to get paid and DGAF about competing against amateurs. Hell, look at handball in the Olympics. If we took a bunch of 3rd stringer NFL and NBA players and taught them the rules and let them play together, they'd easily dominate that sport without a doubt. But what would be their motivation to even do that? Nobody cares about f'kin handball here. lol
