Also, I think Amazon FBA, although it may be saturated now, was/is one of the biggest waves you could ride this decade. Import from China, change it some, sell on Amazon.

This is pretty much true. You have to do something illegal to make it unless you are incredibly gifted/fortunate. Me and a couple of pals are starting our own company and weve already had to cover some grey areas...

Rubbish. I don't want to toot my horn but..

I'm talentless and lazy. Have mainly worked blue collar for barely above minimum wage. I doubt I'll be working much past 50. Ive missed plenty of opportunities along the way. I'm comfortable now and could basically afford to work any job, anywhere. Earn even an average salary and act intelligently there is no reason at all you can't acquire some very respectable net worth

But the successful aren't realistic. They don't think in terms of what's realistic. They have high ambitions and go after that. Elon Musk wants a world of electric cars and he wants to go to Mars by 2025. Steve Jobs and Bill Gates wanted personal computers in every home. In the 80's they said it'd take well into the 2000's for that yet almost every home now has one.

All very true, but let me stress I'm really not talking about 8 figures and upwards net worth, for most of us (almost all of us) it's not gonna happen. Between 7 and 8 figures is very attainable though. Being realistic is a key part of that when it comes to financial planning

Real world, I don't know anybody approaching a six figure salary without being talented and extremely hard working.

Miscers aren't some special breed. Most of us aren't exceptionally bright or hard working. Most of us will earn average salaries for the rest of our lives.

Point of thread was how to make that average salary work for you and give you a better quality of life.
Over the course of a carreer and lifetime it's a lot of work, but in any given moment it's not. The main thing is to have the strength of mind to stay committed to show up for every class @ Uni and show up for every day of work. If you saw me or many people I know in a moment at work you'd be all rustled like: "you guys get 6 digits to do what then?". So many of my deadbeat friends ask: "can you hire me?" when they hear of compensation and benefits... but they are 10 years behind on just going to Uni and showing up for work with the right attitude every day.

If you're making $30k after 10 years at a company you did something wrong. Switching functional areas or companies isn't that much "hard work" imho, but yeah requires SOME effort. While you're schemeing about how to invest your disposable income from your $30k salary to make the money work for you I'm just switching jobs, getting my basic work done, and slowly building my investments. I guess our definitions of lazy differ.

So what, exactly, do you do? There are very, very few job sectors where you could realistically expect a 6 figure salary. My boss has at least 600 people reporting to him and certainly doesn't earn that.

Medical, accounts/actuarial, maybe some very specialised sales positions are possibilities. Most lawyers don't earn 6 figures. And again, I'd say less than 5% of my acquaintances are at or near that salary and they are all above averagely smart and very hard working. It's all relative.

I just want to point out that the obvious disparity you may be seeing with unrealistic expectations are likely tied to location. Our posters in very high cost of living cities in the US (NYC, SF, DC etc.) and also those in Vancouver, London and Australia have very different perceptions of what 6-figures means. Salaries for even seemingly mediocre careers can reach these income levels just to off-set the costs of living. This is not meant to be combative, your comments are certainly appropriate for the "rest of the US". The median for American HOUSEHOLDS was just under $52k in the US in 2013 (Census data, quick google). We use median because it represents the income in the exact center of all incomes reported; it is a better number for reducing the weighting effects of outliers, those with menial and those with super high incomes.

This website also does a good job visualizing some additional studies by the Federal Reserve. You can see the median household income of 21-30 year olds making 100k/yr in income is in the top 6% of all income earners. That's pretty nuts.

Spot saved for later reference.
No man has the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training. It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable.

Ignore the kents, OP. I like the part especially about marriage. It's something I'm planning to do actually. Having a fam and child at 40 is actually not bad. I'll like to have paid off all loans, and have some side investments / businesses before settling.

And you're right, all women deep down do want children. So I'm guessing I'll go through some break-ups because when any relationship gets real and the girl wants to take it to the next level, I'll have to go NC! What gets me is the cost of a wedding these days. No thnx, Jeff.

Wooah there boy.. I live in a good area just outside London, one of the most expensive cities on earth. Most of my acquaintances work there, including me. When I say less than 5% make that sort of money, that is definitely an over estimate for the UK population and the developed world generally.

I disagree with the 'avoid marriage' comment. Just be intelligent about who you marry and make sure you're with them for a while before marrying.

Pros:
Using wife as tax shelter
double income
Inheritance (if she comes from a wealthy family).
