Just hiked the Pacific Crest Trail (cliffs)(pics)(ama)

Cliffs
- OP hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2015
- OP worked odd jobs
- OP hikes the PCT in 2016
- OP loses all gains (again)
- OP makes this thread

Q&A

Q: How long is the trail?
A: 2,650.1 miles but I hiked over 2,700

Q: How do you have the time to do this?
A: I have no real career. Still have no clue what to do. No wife, no kids, no pet, no debt, no real bills, no health problems, etc

Q: What did you eat?
A: Straight junk food. I lost around 30lbs. You think you go hard on your cheat day? Your cheat day is nothing compared to what thru hikers eat.

Q: Favorite part?
A: Everything but the desert

Q: Least favorite part?
A: The desert

Q: How much money did you spend?
A: Around 4,000 on the trail. This does not include gear and plane tickets

Q: How long did this take you?
A: 93 days

Q: Isn't that fast?
A: Yes, average is around 5.5 months

Are you an extrovert or introvert?
Meet lots of people?
Make any friends?
Fuk any bitches?
Was it worth it?
Favorite leg of the trip?
Anything you didn't like?
Was it hard getting water?

What I am miring is your total disregard for social convention as well as being able to say goodbye to your gains. Working out is a supplement to life not your life's purpose, yet many lifters seem to forget that and would toss away life experiences in favor of a workout. My friends rage when they miss a single workout and don't want to go on a single DAY hike.

Honestly I didn't even know the PCT could be done so quickly. I always assumed it was like a 6 month to a year trip.
Death is impossible for us to fathom: it is so immense, so frightening, that we will do almost anything to avoid thinking about it. Society is organized to make death invisible, to keep it several steps removed. That distance may seem necessary for our comfort, but it comes with a terrible price: the illusion of limitless time, and a consequent lack of seriousness about daily life. We are running away from the one reality that faces us all.

How do you know you're going the right way the entire time?

Is it like a carved path the entire way or something?

Hot as fuk man. There's almost zero shade, you are completely exposed to the sun. Very little water so you have to carry a ton.

Make any friends?Yeah
Fuk any bitches?No
Was it worth it?Absolutely
Favorite leg of the trip? The Sierra Nevada was nice but the snow and fords really sucked. Northern Washington was eye porn but rain sucked
Anything you didn't like? The desert sucked. It didn't rain on me much but when it did I was miserable
Was it hard getting water?Only in the desert, you often have to go 30-40 miles without water

My friends rage when they miss a single workout and don't want to go on a single DAY hike.
I used to be like that with my gains. If I missed a set I would find a way to do it at home. Missing a meal made me feel like I was shrinking. I missed out on potentially great trips out of the country when I was younger because I didn't want to miss the gym. Obviously, I have changed. I will still workout and eat clean six times a week back home. But I'm planning to do the CDT next year so im not hitting the gym as hard and eating less to save money.

People also forget it's much easier to make your gains back because you will know what to do. You know what to eat. You know how to train. You know which program works for you (531). You know how to lift with proper form (hopefully). You may be starting from ground zero physically but not mentally. That's a huge difference. Obviously, if you compete on stage it's going to take a long time to make the gains back

The record is two months unsupported. The supported record was just broken by a guy who finished a few days before me. I believe it was 53 days

Never done any long hiking so I have a lot of logistical questions.

Do you pretty much just camp anywhere? Are there lots of places to refill supplies? If you have to piss/dump do you just go off the trail a ways and go anywhere? Do you bathe with any frequency? Run into a lot of people? Run into any scary animals? Did you have a set schedule or did you go at whatever pace you felt like?

I'll probably have more questions later.

I can definitely hike faster and more than most people right now but I've always been average at running if that's what you're asking.

The trail is far safer than most people think. You seriously have a better chance of running into shady situations back home than on trail

The trail is well marked, very well defined. There are maps that people use but I just used an iPhone app the entire time. There's a live GPS on it. I'll post more pics later

Yes, you have to camp/tent. There are no shelters like the AT.

You'll go by a town every 3-5 days depending on your pace. You'll usually have to hitch in and out of town. Sometimes the trail goes very close to town so you can walk.

I pissed a few feet off trail. I shiit off trail out of sight.

I took a shower about once a week when I was in town. I've gone 4.5 months without showering when I was deployed so going a week wasn't hard.

Met a lot of people

No scary animals, some rattlers in the desert

Went at my own pace

Tented on trail and motels/hostels if I stayed in town.

Do it man. Adventure of a lifetime. You'll only be gone for 4-5 months. That's not long. You'll have an experience most people won't. Do it while you're young and in shape. You won't want to hike 2000+ miles when you're retired

Don't have any. I was around 170 when I started and probably around 145 now. I lost 33lbs on the AT last year. I can easily fit into a sub 30 waist right now

Yep, Mexico to Canada. The only part where where I didn't connect footsteps was hitching into South Lake Tahoe. I got picked up on one side of the road and dropped off on the other the next day

If I had to do one again it would be the AT since I am from the east coast it would be easier to get to. Logistically, it is also easier. But I wouldnt mind doing the PCT again either

The first half around 25-30 a day. The second half was 35-40+. I carried no more than 5 days worth of food
