Seriously GJ OP. Mirin hard. Curious what cost $4k on the trail, mostly food I'm sure and a few motel rooms but that seem high. What was most useful non-standard gear item? Any standard gear items that you did not use?

Really mirin especially when I'm live in asia. Would love to visit the states in a few years time.

Questions:
Were you a cardio person prior to all these hikes or did you just lift weights and decided F it i'm just gonna go hiking?
Ever thought of finding a decent job to settle down?
Do you feel the withdrawal symptoms after coming back from the hike and can't wait to go for the next one?
Would you ever find a partner to do this together or rather go solo without all the potential problems that might arise?
The world would be a better place if everyone would channel their frustration and anger to better themselves and be nicer to everyone they meet. Everyone has their own fights and stories to tell, you are not more important than another.

- Cliffs on AT vs PCT? Logistics, difficulties, scenery, how many people on the trail, etc.

- What did you learn on your first thru-hike that was useful to you on this one?

- CDT next??

Did not wear boots. 90% of thru hikers wear trail runners. I wore boots on the AT but trail runners are the way to go. So much lighter, more comfortable and your feet breath much better

I watch survival shows but Im not the person to go into the woods with nothing and live off the land

Didn't have any weird situations on the PCT

I'm not sure if you're trolling either

I did it because I wanted to and I'm into backpacking and the outdoors. What's the point? The point is enjoying my life. I was gone for 3 months, not 6. As far as spending money goes, I could say the same thing about people that spend on drugs, alcohol, tobacco, tricking out their cars, sound systems, expensive designer clothing, fantasy football etc etc. A lot of people actually can work from the trail, I didn't. The goal was to walk from Mexico to Canada.

We're all wasting time right now on an internet forum board

The cost is exactly what you mentioned. You'd be surprised at how much you spend on the trail. Food is the biggest cost. Trust me, when you get into town you're going to gorge until you puke. Money adds up real quick.

What do you mean "most useful non standard gear item"? Everything I used was pretty much needed. Pack, sleeping bad, shelter, water filter, clothes etc.

I went into town every 3-5 days to resupply so I would charge my phone there. I also carried an external battery pack but I never used it.

I'm not doing a single push up when Im hiking 40 miles a day. Fuk that

My baseweight (everything minus food, water and fuel) was around 14lbs. The heaviest was probably around 40lbs in the desert
Originally Posted By CoolKnees

The trail is pretty well marked. There are more markers on the AT but the actual hiking trail on the PCT is much better maintained. So the trail itself is almost the marker. I did get off trail a bunch of time in the Sierra because of snow.

There's around 2,000 people that attempted the trail this year. Probably more. Only 1 in 4 finish

If I had to do one again it would be the AT. I'm closer to it and it's logistically easier

My main passion is lifting. I force myself to do cardio though. I lifted 3-4x a week and did cardio 3x a week.
Ever thought of finding a decent job to settle down?
If I can ever decide what to do
Do you feel the withdrawal symptoms after coming back from the hike and can't wait to go for the next one?
After the AT, no. After the PCT I'm already feeling it a bit. Nothing changes back here, everything's the same. People doing the same shiit. Almost felt like a never left
Would you ever find a partner to do this together or rather go solo without all the potential problems that might arise?
I hiked with people on both the AT and PCT. I prefer to hike with others because it's more fun

- Logistics and water are much easier on the AT. The AT goes through town more often than the PCT. Water is everywhere on the AT as well. However, the AT is BY FAR more physically demanding. The PCT is graded for horses so it's all rolling hills and switchbacks. On the AT there's many times where you have to do 4pt climbing. In Maine there are metal bars drilled into rocks that you have to use. The climbs on the AT are much steeper and on top of that the trail is not as well maintained.

As far as scenery goes, the PCT wins by 100 miles. The only scenery on the AT that compares is the White Mountains. What you see in the Sierra Nevada and northern Washington are truly breathtaking

Both trails have very crowded with hikers, the AT more than the PCT though. The movie Wild really increased the population on the PCT.

I learned EVERYTHING on the AT. If I didn't do the AT I'd still be on the PCT right now. I learned how to thru hike on the AT and it all carried over to the PCT.

I am currently planning to do the CDT in 2017

Bad ass mang. Did you come across any dangerous wildlife? I'd love to do a trail in the US but, for one thing, the idea of bears and snakes and spiders killing me freaks me out.

Did you have any scary moments logistics wise? I.e. no shelter in bad conditions, no water, etc

Did you guys push each other to go that far each day? 40miles a day is an incredible amount

That's some serious miles on the feet in a short amount of time. I can hike like a motherfcker but 93 days is crazy pills. You must have this **** down to an art.

I'll give you an honest reply. Hiking the entire PCT is a huge accomplishment, it's like a really big thing. People do it all the time. It's not equivalent to just waking up one day and saying hey I'm just gonna walk from California to New York herp derp. No, this is an actual thing that people do, there's a more or less clearly defined trail and people sometimes take years in preparation for this. There are several National Scenic Trails across the country, some as few as a couple hundred miles, some are several thousand like the PCT. People have been hiking these for years; world records are taken very seriously as far as age, length, time to complete, etc. I think you misunderstood all of this so I wanted to clear it up. Bottom line is, it's just a cool thing to do and probably one of the biggest accomplishments one can make.

Serioulsy mirin dude. Love hiking/backpacking, but 40 miles a day is crazy, long day for me would be 15 miles. You must have been dawn to dusk. Are you happy that you did it as fast as you did, or next time would you rather take your time more. Too bad you live on the east coast, if you liked northern washington, theres a ton of hikes around coastal BC with stunning views.

Nothing dangerous aside from rattle snakes. I have a huge fear of spiders but I never saw any. There are bears but I didnt see any either

No scary moments with logistics. You really have to pay attention to water in the desert. So many people get rescued because they didn't bring enough water.

Did you guys push each other to go that far each day? 40miles a day is an incredible amount
I met people the first day and hiked with them most of the way. We all did similar miles

That's some serious miles on the feet in a short amount of time. I can hike like a motherfcker but 93 days is crazy pills. You must have this **** down to an art.
You can do it too, especially if you were a Ranger. You've probably done worse in the regiment. There were a decent amount of people doing sub 90. The record is 60 with no help, that's truly insane.

Almost want to quit my job and do this. I hike parts of the PCT around here, the trail through mt hood is 10/10
Oregon was the easiest section/state by far. That's where I could do high 30s and low 40s like nothing. There's almost zero elevation gain. Everything was so flat. There's actually a two week challenge for oregon

Too bad you live on the east coast, if you liked northern washington, theres a ton of hikes around coastal BC with stunning views.
I didn't actually hike 40 every day. If you do the math I averaged almost 30. I only did forty probably around six times. Most of my days were high thirties. I knew a couple people that did 50+. I was usually moving 15 hours out of the day. If I did it again I'd probably do bigger miles but take more time in towns. I missed out on some good towns because I was trying to save money.

Seriously mirin' though. I'm a hiker myself and I thought I was badass for hiking for 3 days straight, meanwhile there are people like you who do it for 3 months. I really need to step up my hiking game

Do you take longer breaks brah or have rest days where you do nothing but relax the entire day? Or do you walk a set distance every day? What do you do during rain and bad weather? Are there any foreigners there hiking such long trails or just Americans? I'm from Europe but would like to do something like that one day, I've heard America has some amazing hikes
