Probably from a trade-in that she owed more on than it was worth. I think around here they cap what you can carry forward on a new loan at $5k.

What's a salary one has to have in London to consider owning a car? Beyond that, since London is a major city with public transit and what I'd assume has limited parking, one likely wouldn't need anything bigger than the European cars that don't make the USA market.

Well they are trading in their car there is no thinking about it, the problem is the have negative equity so they have to still pay off the difference between what they own and the trade in value given by the dealership so they tack that difference on top of the cost of the new vehicle.

I don't judge people for buying expensive cars offhand, but the fact that she financed a new vehicle with negative equity on her old one tells me she doesn't have a clue financially.

a 500 dollar a month payment is a 25,000 dollar car. Her payment is probably north of 900-1000 a month. Every 1000 dollars financed is 18 bucks a month average for tier 1 credit. Every 1000 dollar leased is 30 bucks for tier 1

Correct you don't. But leasing is for people who want low as hell payments or who love new technology every 3 or so years or who want a drive a car normally out of their budget.

I used to work for Audi and 70% of our business was leases. I leased a 27K car 3 months ago and my payments total 11 grand over the 3 years. I have a brand new top of the line trim level for my model with every option available. I have tier 3 credit....my payment is 294 a month

edit: I agree with last statement. If you are gonna finance or pay cash you would be crazy not to get a CPO 2015 or 2016 and let first person eat that deprecition

Always buy used crew. Also always buy cars that don't devalue quickly. I'll say my vette has gotten hit hard. I paid $44k for it + a 3rd party warranty back in December of 2012. I am selling it now once I get it back from the shop. Asking $35k for it. Then will be driving my Dad's old 03 F250 for a long while. I will have no car payment. Payments on that vette were $500 a month. I still owe around $15k now.
