Obviously dentistry is a great career, but it doesn't really register highly on the prestige radar.

Throughout my professional life I don't think I've ever heard anyone associate dentistry with prestige, maybe that's why it didn't even appear on the OP's chart.

Like I'm glad you're overjoyed about your career path, but the reality is dentistry isn't generally considered a prestigious job
"Most people hold law in a high esteem"... which is an ANOMALY, given how chit their working lives are.

I have lawyer friends who have been practising for 5-8 years, not earning over $80k yet.

Lol @ "money has nothing to do with it". And the degree of difficulty of the program has a DIRECT association with how prestigious the course is.

I guess you suppose that getting into a community college is as presigious as getting into Harvard University or Oxford University?

"The general public doesn't know or care about the money or difficulty of getting into dentistry"? What planet do you live on? It's quite widely known here in Australia that dentists earn the big bucks, and getting into dental school requires year 12 students in high school to have a university entrance rank of 98%+ (top 2% of students in their state)

Yes of course.... OP's chart is SPOT ON.

A priest/architect/farmer has more "prestige" than a dental surgeon.

Is melbourne university considered to have the best dental program in australia? Do people assume you will be skilled if you graduate from one of those dental schools where you can enter directly out of highschool?

everyone deserves respect for what they do. everyone has their place and without each industry and position the world would not be near as efficient and we would see little progress. i realize you are discussing the social level of each industry however the doctor is not going to clean your bedpan, and the judge is not going to cuff the criminal.

why not respect a road worker? you don't want crappy roads!
if you want a clean house/office respect your cleaner
if you want your health looked after thank the clerks, and nurses and cleaners at the hospital - the doctors don't do all the work.

does this make sense?
Bench 315 lbs
Squat 355 lbs
Dead 510 lbs - will never lift this again :( final destination snap city 26/9/16

Prestige does not always equal money.
When I was a tradie I made more money than my engineer boss whom had prestige. I was considered scum of the pond in the company because I was a union member making hourly wages. But I made more money yearly than my supervisors. lol.

Once again, that's a matter of opinion.

Dentistry, is essentially a specialty of medicine, focusing on oral health (in conjunction with the whole body). Hence why we have to study the first 2 years of medical school sciences that the medical students at my university study.

Good luck to any any dentist while working on a patient with periodontitis.... who also has heart disease and is on a variety of medications.... if you DON'T have a clue about the process of disease involved. Inb4litigation...

Your argument is weak. That's like saying "opthalmologists only work on the eyes all day.... not prestigious".

Please.

Yes - UMelb is ranked highest in Australia, globally (14th in the world).

And not necessarily.

Entry to graduate-entry dental schools (or medical schools for that matter) requires applicants to have at least a bachelors degree before applying, sitting the GAMSAT, and successfully completing the interview.

As such, graduate-entry applicants will usually have more life experience and many other skills they bring to the role of being a medical or dental student.

Edit:Just saw your edit - "less skilled". I think what people attribute to 17 year old's entering "mature" professions like medicine or dentistry at such a young age is more to do with the lack of maturity and perhaps even naivety. I'd be hesitant to say they were "less skilled". If they can graduate from an undergraduate course of medicine successfully and cope well with the hospital system, they are just as skilled in the end

Yet, according to this chart and many in real life it's not as "successful" as a doctor. ugh. Oh well! Lol. I didn't ever have a chance to become a doctor.
That's because money =/= prestige. Prestige is better summed up as inclusive of mastery of specialized skills, status, abundance of discipline, and work that's tied to something perceived by the general populace as exciting and or highly beneficial to humanity.

Dentistry does have a relatively high amount of prestige, like law, engineering, veterinary doctors etc.

Though in my opinion, doctors have the highest amount of prestige, and rightly so.

It seems like you still do care. Inb4 another butthurt post.

No, thats not what I think of when the word 'prestige' comes to mind.
An occupation being hard, taking immense skill, huge experience needed, etc, have nothing to do with it's 'prestige'
You're doing the same thing that I think the people who came up with OP's chart did; confuse difficulty/importance with prestige.
Just because it might be as hard to get into as medicine at Johns Hopkins, doesnt mean that its as prestigious. Prestige is entirely about social standing/perception

when you think of a firefighter, you think "he's DOING something important". when you think of an acclaimed doctor, you think "he IS someone important"

Thats what prestige is.

Dentistry is the highest paying profession, for graduates straight out of university in Australia. We are the ONLY profession to hit $100,000 straight away, after graduating.

A dentist is like a teeth specialist doctor. Their title is a doctor anyway.

Why is Accounting so far down on the list. They're the ones who actually run companies behind the scenes. The CEO just literally spew out what the accountant reports to them.

Good luck on completely eliminating sugary/acidic drinks and food from peoples diets (especially children), AND having everyone disciplined in brushing their teeth properly/using mouthwash/flossing twice a day. This is compounded even further, for people living in lower socioeconomic societies.

Not going to happen.

Even if these things were to happen - the process of caries development and dental decay would still occur in society. One of my classmates from Vancouver told me that Vancouver does not have fluoridated water (lmao). The result? When I was examining him a few weeks ago in the perio clinic at hospital, he had MANY fillings and dental procedures.

Also, afewconditions in dentistry, not necessarily associated with diet - wisdom teeth occlusion? Ondotogenic cysts? Periapical/periodontal disease? Malocclusion? Bruxism? Xerostomia? Sjrogen's Syndrome? Gingivitis? Temperomandibular joint disorders? Tooth sensitivity? Amelogenesis Imperfecta? Dens Invaginatus? Oral cancer (which doctors aren't trained to detect)? Pulpitis? Trigeminal neuralgia (AKA "suicide disease")? Chipped teeth (trauma)? Oral candidiasis? Fractured jaws? Protrusion of maxilla/mandible? Supernumerary teeth? Overbite/underbite/crossbite?

Don't kid yourself brah - dentistry will always be around... like nursing, physiotherapy, optometry etc.The first records of dentistry were from approx 14000 years ago lol.

Interesting topic is this.

I'm a licensed real estate agent in Australia, though I don't act as an REA myself.

Day to day, I sell new homes. Bring in roughly $340k/year from that alone.

Currently doubling up by project managing investment properties for clients, as well as sourcing land/properties for them and acting on their behalf as a buyers agent.

On top of that, working on an office fit-out for a "store front" Real estate office, in which I'll have sales associates working under my license with myself as the principle. All up, looking at upwards of $1.5mil/year in total profit for my company (also includes the new home sales), with a turnover of closer to $2.8mil. That's only on a small scale operation, and at current I'm the sole director.

Long story short, there are "real estate agents" and those of us who act less as an agent and more of a business person. I supposed we'd fall closer to the "company executives" on the table though.

I'm a lawyer and no, most lawyers do not cap out at 80-100K. Government attorneys do but they also have benefits and work 40-45 hours a week and have nice work life balance. Private attorneys do not cap out at that. I've worked as both a government and private attorney as a reference.

Not going to happen.

Even if these things were to happen - the process of caries development and dental decay would still occur in society. One of my classmates from Vancouver told me that Vancouver does not have fluoridated water (lmao). The result? When I was examining him a few weeks ago in the perio clinic at hospital, he had MANY fillings and dental procedures.

Also, afewconditions in dentistry, not necessarily associated with diet - wisdom teeth occlusion? Ondotogenic cysts? Periapical/periodontal disease? Malocclusion? Bruxism? Xerostomia? Sjrogen's Syndrome? Gingivitis? Temperomandibular joint disorders? Tooth sensitivity? Amelogenesis Imperfecta? Dens Invaginatus? Oral cancer (which doctors aren't trained to detect)? Pulpitis? Trigeminal neuralgia? Chipped teeth (trauma)? Oral candidiasis? Fractured jaws? Protrusion of maxilla/mandible? Supernumerary teeth? Overbite/underbite/crossbite?

Don't kid yourself brah - dentistry will always be around... like nursing, physiotherapy, optometry etc.The first records of dentistry were from approx 14000 years ago lol.
I know through personal experience, that diet alone would fix the extreme vast majority of society's dental ailments. I used to have fukked up teeth -- used to have horrible tooth aches all the time, needed regular dental visits, required many fillings, and eventually had to get 2 of my teeth pulled. I started reading a lot of chit online about remineralizing teeth naturally. It's not a difficult thing to do either. I eliminated all sugary drinks and junk food from my diet, started eating a **** tonne of dark green leafy vegetables and broccoli etc. My teeth improved so quickly I was absolutely mind blown. Now I have zero teeth aches, my gums aren't dark and dont bleed anymore, and I havent been to the dentist in over a year. My brushing habits didn't change either...only my diet changed. Of course, dentists suppress this information because it's in their business interests for everyone to have fukked up teeth.

Fuark, through your own anecdotal personal experience, you know more about dentistry and oral disease than dental students, PhDs, DDS's, researchers, oral surgeons etc do.

Dentists "suppress" this information? Lmfao. Comedy gold right there. If anything, all dentists try to do through public health discourse is relay information about how bad sugary drinks, acidic foods etc are for you on a regular basis.

Did you know, that even IF you brush your teeth/floss etc.... the natural process of saliva flow, bacterial progression etc means that plaque development begins and abiofilm can form within 2-3 hours of your last brushing session? That's right. Pellicle formation on your enamel. Dental pellicle is a protein film that forms on the surface enamel by selective binding of glycoproteins from saliva that prevents continuous deposition of salivary calcium phosphate. It forms in seconds after a tooth is cleaned or after chewing.

I guess your cereal-box DMD/DDS degree didn't teach you this?

Uh oh, there goes your theory...

Indigenous australians. BRB perfect teeth, zero dentists.

Dental problems are a disease of the modern age, just like obesity and many cancers.

And yes, they suppress the info by OMISSION. When I was suffering awful tooth aches all the time and getting teeth pulled, NOT ONCE did I have a dentist question my dietary habits or suggest what I should and should not be eating. Instead they clean your teeth with FLUORIDE and give you toothpaste with more FLUORIDE in it, and insist that you brush your teeth with FLUORIDE every day. Why are dentists so obsessed with FLUORIDE? Did the australian aboriginals or any other ancient cultures use fluoride to clean their teeth? They didnt even have toothpaste. If they saw you scrubbing your teeth with a little brush, they'd think you'd gone insane.

"Prestige, money and wealth?" Let me give you some information....

Dentistry is the highest paying profession, for graduates straight out of university in Australia. We are the ONLY profession to hit $100,000 straight away, after graduating.

Show me ANY other job, where you get this kind of salary... 2 years out of university

lol get over it dude dentists are the laughing stock of the professional degrees. You're basically on the same prestige level as a chiropractor.

It is true that Aboriginal people, prior to Western colonization and the introduction of sugary diets etc had a lower caries incidence.... especially compared to Aboriginal populations today.

This although interesting, is no revelation. A sugary diet, let alone a diet consisting of low to moderate carbohydrate intake, is associated with a higher caries rate.

Lmao @ your misinformation. Dental disease (consisting of FAR MORE than caries), has been around forever.

The only ones laughing are the dentists - all the way to the bank

Same level of prestige as a chiropractic quack, whose entire basis of disease is based on flawed pseudoscience ("subluxations" in the spine), and gross extrapolations in how "cracking the spine" can cure someone's flu? Yes, I've heard this absurd statement from a chiropractor.

U mad that you'll never get $200k within 2 years of graduating? It's time to stop crying yourself to sleep each night brah, and try fisting yourself instead.

Next.
