Youngest person executed in the U.S.


George Stinney Jr. - 14 years old
George Junius Stinney Jr. (October 21, 1929 – June 16, 1944), an African-American, age 14, was convicted of murder, as a result of a racially-biased and discriminatory trial, in 1944 in his home town of Alcolu, South Carolina. He was the youngest person in the United States in the 20th-century to be sentenced to death and to be executed.[1]

Stinney was convicted in less than 10 minutes, during a one-day trial, by an all-white, all male jury[2] of the first-degree murder of two white girls: 11-year-old Betty June Binnicker and 8-year-old Mary Emma Thames. After being arrested, Stinney was said to have confessed to the crime.[3][4] There was no written record of his confession apart from notes provided by an investigating deputy,[5] and no transcript of the brief trial. He was denied appeal and executed by electric chair.

Celia, age 14, arrives from neighboring Audrain County to become Robert Newsom's first female slave, joining five male slaves on his 800-acre farm....Callaway County's population is 13,827, including 9,895 whites.

Robert Newsom, age 60, rapes Celia in 1850 and continues to demand sexual relations from his slave girl over the course of the next five years. Celia gives birth to two children, almost certainly fathered by Newsom. Her main duty on the farm seems to be that of cook....Sometime before 1855, Celia enters into a romantic relationship with George, another one of Newsom's slaves.

Celia becomes pregnant again, either carrying the child of Newsom or George, her lover. George demands the Celia stop having sex with Newsom.

Newsom, having rejected Celia's plea that he stop having sex with her, tells Celia "he was coming to her cabin that night." At about 10 p.m., Newsom leaves his house and walks the fifty yards over to Celia's cabin. When Newsom advances toward Celia, she strikes him on the head with a large stick. He falls from the blow and Celia hits him on the head on second time, killing him. She places Newsom's body in her fireplace and lights a fire.

This wasn't a race thread at all. I'm not sure why you made this response but i'm not surprised. If, you want to talk about abortion, we can. Miscers are vastly in support anyway, especially their own children. I assume you're both pro lifers? In my opinion, the life of a fetus is not equal to that of a child. I also hold the American Justice up to a higher standard than the action of others.

The execution of George Stinney was carried out at the Central Correctional Institution in Columbia on June 16, 1944, at 7:30 p.m.[9] Standing 5 feet 1 inch (155 cm) tall and weighing just over 90 pounds (40 kg),[14] Stinney was so small compared to the usual adult prisoners that law officers had difficulty securing him to the frame holding the electrodes. The state's adult-sized face-mask did not fit him; as he was hit with the first 2,400 V surge of electricity, the mask covering his face slipped off.[15] Stinney was declared dead within four minutes of the initial electrocution. From the time of the murders until Stinney's execution, 83 days had passed

One day trial? Less than 10 minutes to decide the outcome? His peers did an excellent job of looking at the facts. Detectives did an even greater job with their police work.

We should honor those men with statues.

1944. Shouldn't be to shocking. And it's in the south. Kid probably didn't even do it and the guy that did lived a full life til he died of old age at 93

I have a hard time believing he killed and tried to rape two white girls given his age, location, and time period. He was only 5'1 and 90lb, an extremely small kid. How could he have beat them both to death? His sister also claimed she was with him the whole time. There's no evidence pointing him to the crime and no evidence of a confession.

I just quoted the summary paragraph at the top of the wiki page. I didn't even think twice about it. I have taken many "science" classes. I fetus is "alive" per se but I feel it's life isn't worth ours until it can survive independently from the womb.

The judgment noted that while Stinney may in fact have committed the crime, the prosecution and trial were fundamentally flawed

I was watching a random court trial on youtube and a commenter said it was the worst injustice in American history. I started looking up random cases and this one stood out. I expected misc to be outraged along with me. I was going to post another case with a white victim but you guys didn't give me a chance.

Point is, the case is over 70 years old. The farther you go back in history the more injustices you'll see. I'm not saying the kid got a fair trial or should have been put to death, but its really hard to comment on something that we have really no information on.

I agree the trial is a farce but the time period and location needs to be considered.

African Americans do commit much more crime than any other demographic --like 3x white people-- in the US today and violent crime rates are probably 1/3 of what they were in 1950. So you're potentially looking at around a demographic committing 9x more crime than an average white person today.

That said, the trial was probably a racist farce. Or maybe it was a small town and everyone knew each other so they knew who did it and didn't need a real trial. Who knows?
