Dude in truck was on cell phone and accidentally killed 4 people

The dude got 10 years in prison, now there's an argument on on ******** with people saying that the truck driver should have gotten more than 10 years in prison, some even suggesting he should get put to death.

What's your views?

If this is the one that happened in the UK then he can't be put to death anyway.

I saw some footage from the dashcam, he was on a motorway and the stationary cars (which he hit) would've been in his line of sight for 10+ seconds easily, probably longer. To have your eyes off the road for that long, especially when you've driving 30 tonnes of mass at 70 MPH, is asking for trouble.

Is this the one you're on about OP?http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-37823457

EDIT: That dashcam footage doesn't show it all but I saw a picture of the road where it happened, it's a dead straight piece of motorway, it's not like he came round a corner and they were there..

I don't know what's fair I can see arguments for both sides of incidents like this. On the one hand he killed 4 innocent people and yeah I suppose people like that need to be punished... But on the other hand I'm sure he didn't actually do it on purpose, so what does locking him up for ten years even accomplish? or killing him? Does it really take ten years to "rehab" someone into knowing not to talk on their cell phone again when driving?

Seems like overkill to me. I'd probably see it differently if one of those 4 people were my family though lol.

For one thing, putting him in prison isn't going to bring anyone back. Yes, he messed up, but we all do dumb things that could have ended very badly and we lucked out. Okay some of you never leave your basement but those of us that are living life. Yes he was very stupid. However, is he a danger to society? Is it right to destroy one person's life just to appease the feelings of others? I think he should never be allowed to drive anything again, but prison? We live in a society that loves to lock people up. I think that unless he's a sociopath or phychopath, he has to feel ton of guilt knowing his actions caused this. I know if I did something like that I'd probably be in a mental home trying to deal with it. Incredibly irrisponsible but criminal?

Death penalty.

Vehicles are weapons.

If you drink/text/sleep while driving you are making a conscious decision to endanger others. Your life should be ruined 100%.

Prison isn't all about reforming someone's character though, otherwise there'd be no death penalty or life sentences. It's got to act as a deterrent as well. The dude ****ed up, other people need to see there's a price to pay over just getting banned from driving.

brb ******* falls asleep at the wheel and kills someone...eh what the hell, give him a sleep medicine referral and let him roam free

brb ******* in a fukin DIESEL TRUCK disregards the safety of others for a long period of time and kills 4 people, ruins 4 families, and is an all around piece of chit...what the hell, tell him to be careful with his cell phone next time and let him roam free

Criminal negligence. The same way a cop puts a pistol to someone's back and fatally hoots them while they are face down and claims they thought it was their taser in their hand the whole time. When you fuk up, you gotta pay, especially if it costs someone their life

Yeah, I agree that the fact he killed them is enough of a deterrent to prevent him from ever looking at phone the same way again, and there's like absolutely no chance he would ever even think about looking at a phone again while driving.

The only reason I can see for giving him a harsh/er sentence would be to make other people in the future think twice about picking up their phone while driving.

It solves absolutely nothing on a individual level, infact i'd go as far as to say this guy would now probably be amongst the safest drivers in the world if he were to ever drive again just because he would be so haunted by what he had done in his past.

Fck man that's pretty tragic. As well that surviving members of the family were close by in another car too. Nothing said about the father but he must be a suicidal wreck. He destroyed so many lives. Another guy too who broke his back and had a collapsed lung. Jesus.

And they were completely oblivious. Probably laughing and chatting in the car then boom. Dead. Insane.

I admit sometimes I look down to change a song but only for a second but even that I shouldn't do. Sometimes I see people legit holding the phone in one hand texting whilst driving. That's insane.

But it is. Multiple studies show that over 80-90% of drivers are absolutely aware of the risks of texting while driving (distractions) but still continue to do it. Everyone knows you shouldn't drink and drive, and yet some still continue to do it. And falling asleep...well that one's harder to control, but still, most are aware of their level of alertness when getting into their car.

So you're saying a person is ignorant of what would happen if they choose to look off the road for xx amount of time to look at their phone?

I don't even look at my phone while I walk with fear of running into something or someone.

Ye driving here in florida after driving in the Uk is flat out scary srs. Blond bishes in big SUV's doing their make up and texting constantly, I see it every single day here. Not even looking where they are going, head right up their ass. There is a reason there is a pile up nearly every day here on one of the main high ways, fk.

Gotta agree with this. I think the sheer trauma of killing 4 people would ensure that he wouldn't do it again. Just seems like a waste to society considering the cost of prison and the fact that he can't be productive in prison.

What's the difference between what this guy did and what James Holmes (Batman shooter) did?

Both should have gotten the death penalty, but at the least, this idiot should have gotten life.

If someone killed my mom or brother text driving I'd get revenge if that person got off easy.
