Ooops!

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2016/11/01...colleague.html

Deputy Sgt. Rod Lucas was having a conversation with a detective about how to carry their backup weapons when the shot was fired on Monday, Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mi.

A 20-year veteran sheriff's deputy in Central California was killed by a bullet in the chest from a colleague's gun in what officials said Tuesday appeared to be "a tragic accidental shooting."

That's right here at home. Supposedly they were discussing their equipment. The officer that accidentally discharged his weapon was a 9 year veteran.

Sad.

Yah its sad, he had 4 kids too.

Lucas was back in his hometown of Tranquillity responding to an armed robbery when he chased the suspect on foot for a mile. When he and two other deputies closed in, the robber pulled a gun.

Lucas shot first, though, and saved himself and the other two deputies. His award writeup said Lucas' actions on that day showed his true character-- qualities his team will always remember.

Dug around a little more this afternoon and looks like the ATF is saying you don't have to provide fingerprints/photo for a new person added to your trust for existing items, but you will for new transfers.

If you're set on a shot gun, for a cheap but super reliable pump gun, either the Mossberg 500 or the Remington 870.

For smallest package, highest capacity, most maneuverable and most tactical, maybe the Kel-tec KSG? From what I understand the newer models are pretty solid.

Are Saiga 12s still around? Never hear anything about those.

Budget?

If money is no option, Benelli m4. ~$1800

http://www.gandermountain.com/modper...cgi?i=GM435461

Slightly cheaper similar option would be an FNH SLP Mk 1. $1200ish

http://www.gunbroker.com/item/594567709

Semiautomatics tend to be finnicky, though. They don't always do well with low brass lightweight ammo (birdshot, for example...7/8 and 1 oz) so if you're navigating the walking dead world, that might be a problem. A pump action will eat anything. The Mossberg 590a1 and Remington 870 have 3" chambers so take any 2 3/4" and 3" shells, and can be had for the $400-$600 range depending on how you set them up. Their accessories are readily available, too -- they've been around awhile. Shell saddle carriers, stocks, foreends, light systems, ghost ring sights....the list goes on.

or the 590a1

You could choose either one and be extremely satisfied. There's minor differences between the two that you'll want to youtube. The most noticeable is that the Mossberg has a tang safety, the 870 has a cross bolt.

MY 870:

My 590a1:

If you want a sweeter package, the DP12 may be an option. I'd steer clear of the KSG, though -- I have 1 and so does my dad... they're cool, but after a couple years, I'd always reach for the 590a1 or 870 first. The newer KSG's are more reliable, but I still hear they have issues when at the low ready and racking the slide.

August 2023:
