Model is the model of the lower. If you don't know which you'll use, I'd probably just go with 10.5". Technically it should be whatever you first assemble exactly, but there is no regulations for being able to change the barrel to something else, so there's no way anyone will know differently. But yea, if you buy a 10.5" barrel from somewhere, you'll put 10.5" on the form for barrel length. Overall length will be from the tip of the barrel with no muzzle device installed to the end of your stock with it fully extended.

I've found a few resources since posting that cleared most of that up. Looks like if you do end up changing calibers/length you just send a letter in to the ATF notifying them of the change. A lot of the info out there is from pre-41f and a new revision of the Form 1 is out. Not too many changes it looks like but this site has been the best thing I've found so far for completing the new revision.

I think that the general consensus for the best condition to have an AR that potentially will be used (home defense or whatever) is either:

A) Round in chamber (bolt forward and hammer is "charged") and weapon on safe.
B) No round in chamber and bolt is forward, but the hammer is "charged" so that you can also have it on safe.

Personally I prefer A, but for B you would do this:

1) Weapon starts with hammer "down", bolt forward, and unloaded.
2) Pull charging handle to charge the hammer (maybe then pull the trigger to function test as well, then repeat this step)
3) Put weapon on safe
4) Insert magazine
5) Close dust cover

Now you will just need to charge the weapon by pulling charging handle when ready to use.

Anyone have suggestions for a decent, but relative inexpensive, IR monocular or binoculars? My parents live right on a huge greenbelt and get a lot of animals going through there at night. My mom was talking about wanting to get a good light so she could see/watch them . . . but I told her they'd just get run off by it, most likely. So was thinking about getting her something where she could sit up on her deck with the lights out and actually watch them without being seen herself.

It's more for kicks . . . so was going to start looking around for something that might work for her to mess around with.

So I got a Harris bipod, its nice and I want more to put on some of my other AR15s, my question is can I save money by going with cheaper china clones, are they good enough, or go with the $60+ Harris ones?

Basically, I need a gun and am debating between something like a $450 Glock pistol, $300ish smith and wesson pistol, orrrrr just getting an AR15.

Anyway, it looks good but I have two questions.

Handguns too? I keep the 1911 under the bed in a lil MicroVault with keypad. Loaded mag, not chambered. If I'm going in and out throughout the day it's either holstered, or within reach in the holster, cocked & locked. If I'm just rotting away on a day off sometimes it's just sitting next to me not chambered.

I can't think of a negative of having it cock & locked in the safe, just haven't been doing it that way. Springs lose tension from use not being compressed so I don't think spring failure is an issue. Meh, maybe I'll switch.
