Math in engineering courses is a joke. Most of the students you will be teaching won't remember 90% of the stuff they study in a couple years.

Laplace transforms lmao you just need to consult a table, or use a computer.

Same for differential equations.

The problem with mathematicians is that they want to push their rigorous chit into engineering programs, which would be valid if it were of any use later, but it never is.

How can you understand something without being rigourous.
This makes dumb engineers.

Honestly if it was only of me, the first year in engineering would be only mathematics courses. How are engineers supposed to understand anything without the right tools first.

Either troll or clueless. Are you sure you understand what you've been tasked with correctly? Even well-qualified freshmen would be wasting their time with this material so early in their education.

Is the expectation that all these students have already finished multi-variable calculus in high school? When I was in school (albeit 10 years ago), there was no way to have passed multi-variable calc before freshmen year.

I suppose if you took AP Calc 2-3 in 11th grade, then took night classes in college it is possible, but to build a freshman syllabus based on that assumption seems insane.

I had plenty of courses with only two 50% exams. The problem is that more exams mean more grading for me and losing valuable time in class. Also, there is two part in this course, hence two exams.

Just add a "simple" 1-2 question quiz each week in the last 10-15 minutes of class. I even had a couple engineering classes that had their quizzes during designated "discussion" sections that were held once a week outside of normal class times (usually later in the afternoon).

Your students will probably not like you for giving them a quiz every week (esp. if it's on friday, as they won't be able to go out drinking thurs night lol), but it WILL help most of them learn the material better.

I'm just saying that while you can teach everything, you don't need to make exams difficult. My math exams were always super hard and I don't remember a single situation IRL where I had to actually calculate hard differential equations myself by hand, for example.

To be honest, I did my undergraduate years in a french university (in Canada) and I have some hard time to relate with what you call "Calculus 1, 2 and 3" and "AP thing".

Two midterms and a final - minimum. Asking your students to learn and remember too much information between testing periods will result in low grades, meaning you'll have to figure out how to curve the grades, and have to deal with more disgruntled students. I had a physics phd student teach us the intro E&M course, and dude had no idea how to make the tests doable in the time given, which resulted in him becoming stressed out and having to conjure up some abstruse method for adjusting the grades.

In the US, most college oriented high school students take about 1.5 years of calculus in high school. They cover everything up to multi-variable calculus. Hmmm.. I can remember my only course in statistical physics. The exams were so hard (impossible) that the average for the midterm was 16% and something like 20% for the final.

I nevertheless got an A (there was an A+ possible), but this is one of the hardest class I ever had because of the teacher. The exams were designed to instill fear in the students. On the final we had like eight questions for two hours and each question was a legit 2-3 page of hard maths.

I have two subjects that are not really related, vector calculus and differential equations.

the drop rate will be high if the students can only depend on two tests to pass.

give pop quizzes so the students are forced to pay attention and study.

give homework too so the students know exactly what to study for. you don't have to make them turn it in, just assign them certain questions in the textbook and say its entirely up to them if they want to pass or not.

I don't think engineers have tensor analysis. Physicists and applied mathematicians do, but I have no idea for engineers.

Maybe I should give a complete formula sheet for the exams?
But I want my students not just rely on a formula sheet.

Looks good. Sometimes you just have to squeeze in a lot of material in a short amount of time. That's just how academia works.

This was exactly my schedule except I started with Pre-cal and I did Cal 2 in the summer semester of my freshman year. The easiest for me was Cal 3. The most enjoyable was Cal 2.

In regards to OP, PLEASE do not Fuk this up. Differential Equation is an easy subject that can be made incredibly hard by having a DUMB instructor. Keep this in mind. You are there to TEACH the students. Not to show off how much you know or how easy it is for you to do.

Vector Calculus is easy, so can't possibly fuk that up. BTW what is your course called? With most colleges in The U.S the material for Vector Calculus and Diff EQ is separated.

50% for exams is really harsh OP, especially the midterm. Add in homework that's submitted online and just give credit to those who turned in something that looks relatively complete. Maybe even add in attendance for a grade. That should bring the midterm to about 35% which is more than reasonable
