All without having to spend the best years of their lives doing mind numbing work that adds no true value. Without having to pull insane hours working while studying for CPA. For the amount of time, energy, and effort put into an accounting career, the pay off is mediocre at best. Sure you can do well at the top end of the profession, but you can do just as well if not better in tons of other fields without having to put im nearly the same amount of commitment.

The sad part is what youre describing is like the pinnacle of success for accountants. Most dont even go big 4 and will be lucky to see six figures at any point in their career.

A lot of accountants are pretty damn miserable and only seem to tolerate the profession because its a safe and relatively secure ticket to a middle class lifestyle
Ok. I said 28 years old, but whatever. You act like 100k at sub 30 is a common thing, when avg HOUSEHOLD income in the US is like 40-50k lol. Call it cope, dont really care. Im below 30 and already in the 6 figure range, and im not breaking my back doing it like a tradesman is. I work avg 40-50hrs a week when it's not busy season, so ill take that. Cope harder man, you know nothing about this field. Stop acting like you do.

Also, im in a state where 100k is considered a lot. Tech jobs in cali make 100k but cost of living is ridiculously high. Sorry bro but im owning you.

I always look at accounting as the warehouse workers of the corporate world. Doing the same mundane mindless bull**** 9 hours a day 5 days a week.

I used to do financial accounting and it always bothered the **** out of me that you don't actually produce a product. You're just support for the people that are really doing things that produce real value. Much of it isn't even support; it's just keeping them protected from the regulatory parasites. You never actually produce anything of value. You're just a drain on society.

You're a back-office bitch.

Drove me nuts.

Also, the realization that there was a 1/3 chance that I'd black out of this world to an Excel spreadsheet.. No thanks Jeff.

**** finance. **** accounting. **** anyone with the personality to be one.

Agreed. Which us why a lot of businesses look to minimize the cost our function at every opportunity. It adds no true value. Hence the off shoring and out sourcing of accounting dpts. Its only going to get worse as the years go by. Overall accounting will get leaner and leaner (as it should). Doing tax and assurance is bad enough, id legit off myself if i were strictly in a financial reporting role

First of all, big 4 pays anywhere from 55k-60k starting in audit, tax gets a bit more. You can make 100-110k beginning at age 28-29 if you stay (uncommon but very doable if you are willing to put in the work). Meanwhile marketing majors are still getting 40k range salaries.

But the salary isnt the point, the resume part is. Most high rank people in corporations are all big 4 alumni. Big 4 on the resume is literally the GOAT thing in business. Got friends in the firm heading out as seniors getting 6 figure jobs sub 30 years old lmao. U mad?
Accounting bruh checking and you are sugercoating the **** out of this just to make your self feel better. I did the corporate work for 2 years and you are literally wasting your life in a office. During busy season you can go in at 8am and leave at 11pm just to be back at 8am the next day.

HERE IS THE REAL DEAL WITH ACCOUNTING

EDUCATION : The amount of education needed to start at 55k is UNREAL. You are pretty much not an accountant without a CPA so if you are gonna do accounting you will need your CPA to make the big bucks. To do that you will need 150 credit hours from school (regular bachelor degree only gives you 120). This means you will need to double major (reason i did accounting and business management degree) or you will need to get a Masters Degree in Accounting or Tax... so that is about 6 years of schooling..Think about the money and time you are spending here just to start at FUKKKIN 55k a year working 60-90 hrs a week if you are lucky.... Masters in Accounting at my school was $36k alone.

CPA EXAM : So lets say you went through all the trouble to actually qualify for the exam you need to pass the CPA exam and it is the biggest piece of **** test possible. Some say that it is even harder then bar exam....to me it wasnt so much hard as it was BS with so much information. There are 4 exams and each exam you study for 2-3 months with soo much material only to get tested on maybe 10% of the **** you studied. The exam passing rate for each one of those is 40-50% so yes most people struggle with it and remember these are the people that got two degrees or masters in college. The fees for this exam quickly add up you are looking at 2-3k at least including the study material and thats if you pass all the exams on first try which is unusual.

WORKING FOR BIG 4 : By putting in the work you should mention that about 4-6 months a year you are working 70-90 hours a week during busy season and other time you are putting in 50-70 hours a week. You do this all for $50 K a year and when calculating hourly rate you get about $12-$13 an hour maybe less. If you can stick to doing this for 4 years yes you can earn 100k a year but you will still be working 70-90 hours during busy season and have no life. HOWEVER most people leave big 4 in two years (some smarter people less ) because they burn the fuk out...Only the no life losers actually stay slaving away at big 4 many neglecting their families to slave away for those fukkin companies.

THE WORK : The work is boring as **** no matter if you are in tax or audit. If you are in audit you are literally looking at numbers that the company reported and trying to get all the evidence to see if that is actually what they should have reported. So if company says they have 100k in accounts receivable you will get all their receipts and calculate that they did in fact get 100k in accounts receivable for the year if so check mark and move on to the next one. 99% of the time everything checks out so imagine doing all this work and its always correct BORING...the 1% it doesnt check out you dont get to say AH HUH i see you trying to cook the books nope....if you catch the company doing something shady you dont say anything negative about them because they are paying you to audit them. You try to work it out with the management and if it is really bad your audit firm will just leave the client... you wont be able to go out and tell everyone i audited this company and they are fukkin lying nope the company you work for will just drop the client. Tax is tax do i even need to say how boring it is ?

CLIFFS

You go to school for about 6 years spending 1000's taking 100's of exams to qualify to become CPA ...then you take 4 bs exams where you study 2-3 months for each exam and pay $2-3k in fees and study material to be able to start making 50-55k a year working 70-90 hours for about 3-4 months out of the year and other times working 50-70 hours. I DO NOT RECOMMEND ACCOUNTING TO ANYONE. The only reason i would recommend someone do accounting is if you plan on owning your own business which is what i did.

That sounds fuking brutal. This is why i always tell people RESEARCH before you blindly go to school for something. They dont tell you this in the beginning. They try and fantasize it and make it seem exciting.

spot on.

with saturation of the grads, cpa is pretty much a must at this point.

cpa isn't as bad as people make it out to be, but it is fuking annoying for sure if you suck at taking exams.

thankfully I managed to avoid public route. some of my friends who went public have aged 5 years in the last 2 years. absolutely horrifying.

like jester said, for 99% accounting grads, it is a safe ticket to middle class at best.

ideal scenario is to get a low-stress corporate gig @ 40 hours a week, and then figure out your escape plan as you hustle on the side.

You go to school for about 6 years spending 1000's taking 100's of exams to qualify to become CPA ...then you take 4 bs exams where you study 2-3 months for each exam and pay $2-3k in fees and study material to be able to start making 50-55k a year working 70-90 hours for about 3-4 months out of the year and other times working 50-70 hours. I DO NOT RECOMMEND ACCOUNTING TO ANYONE. The only reason i would recommend someone do accounting is if you plan on owning your own business which is what i did.
Totally true. I did a year in auditing with the big4 and it was totally miserable, however if you do like 3 to 5 years you can move on to a pretty chill job that isnt too bad as a controller in training. If you do well after your life in public accounting you have a great path to being a cfo and maybe ceo. It isnmiserable at the bottom but if you can handle it you are comfy with great upside.

I switched from M.E. to Finance. No regrets.

Firm believer M.E's are way underpaid for what they actually do and the schooling they are required to go through.

This is if you go in to public accounting. There is some good money to be made in corporate accounting (I made 52 straight out of college and make 57 after a year and a half), and government accounting as well. I only work 40 hr/week and have plenty of time to train some of my powerlifting clients on the side.

Do feel bad for my brahs who are working them 60 hour weeks at big 4 tho. I couldn't do it.

While I do agree with certain points, I do believe you are embellishing. The vast majority of people spend 4-5 years at school to obtain the 150. Moreover, lets not act like the CPA exam is harder than it is. Most people (from my school and firm atleast) take about one month to study per section. And what poverty firm makes any their employees pay for any CPA related expenses? No one I know spent a dime on their CPA. But you are right in saying the hours do get ****ty during busy season.

That kind of the point....I don't want to do your job. I would rather be a corporate financial analyst.

If it was so easy for accountants to get finance gigs then there would be less people bitching about accounting.

So tell me, why do so many accountants bitch about the life of one if they could be in finance?

This is true but there is a HUGE downside to going straight to corporate accounting after college. The downside is that you will pretty much be stuck at 60k-70k a year forever and in most cases you will not move up in the company as most corporate companies will get someone that worked for big 4 to be your boss and they will be making the big bucks.

My advice for all my fellow accountants is you have the business knowledge so start your own business! You know the ins and outs of businesses especially if you have worked in accounting for a while you probably looked at the books of many different businesses. When i did accounting i dealt with 100's of business owners a year and one thing i realized is that in many cases they were complete idiots yet many were making millions of dollars from their business. I said to my self if they can do it I can do it i left the corporate world and started my own **** and best decision i made in my life.

Again lets not try to sugarcoat ****.... Now days it takes many people 6 years to get a bachelors degree by itself ...
source :http://www.politifact.com/wisconsin/...s-us-sen-ron-/

You saying 4-5 years to get bleachers and masters or double major is kinda bs bro (is it possible yes likely NO) Heck some people graduate hs at 10 years old so are we gonna say that people should be graduating college at 14 now. The fact is that most people will take 4 years just to complete one degree (and even that is being nice by saying that) so you saying 4 years to get both degrees or one degree and masters is kinda bull ****. Not saying you did not do it but we are talking about average person here...

Also you say most people at your firm pass the exam fairly easy and only study for a month for each exam... here are the pass rates they speak for themselves

2015 pass rates by exam section
Jan - Feb Apr - May July - Aug Oct - Nov Cumulative
AUDIT 45% 49% 48% 47% 47%
BEC 53% 58% 59% 55% 56%
FAR 44% 49% 50% 43% 47%
REG 48% 51% 51% 47% 49%

Source
http://www.mncpa.org/cpa-exam/exam-f...tatistics.aspx

So you mean to tell me that the people at your firm work 60-90hrs a week and study after work and only spend 1 month studying and pass the exam easy....

Yes the CPA firm will reimburse you for your fees but you have to pay for them in advance and if you fail they wont pay for your failed attempts. Also there are many people that take the exams before they start working so they dont have to work 60 hours a week and then study 5-6 hrs a day after work so in that case they have to pay all the fees themselves..

The thing is OP, some people only want to sit at their desk and crunch numbers all day. That's what attracts them to Accounting in the first place. Most aren't exactly outgoing or dying to move up the ladder. And making good money while working in a nice office is a pretty good life compared to a lot of other jobs.

For full disclosure, I'm a finance major who started as a base financial analyst and now I'm close to the top of the company. Obviously I think finance is greater than accounting from a job potential perspective but not every one is cut out, nor wants to, do the type of creative analysis and effective communication needed for higher level finance jobs.
