Also, the number of hours you will be working will be highly dependent on team, client, time of year, etc. generally speaking though you will likely be averaging at least 50 hours a week. During busy season, it is definitely possible to be working from 9-11 or midnight.

At 5 years you should make manager which would put you at 100k. I did it in 3.5 at a local firm.

Some people get there early and some don't get there ever, it's not guaranteed but easily achievable for an intelligent person.

U wot m8? EY must be shortchanging their associates in NY. I'm in a similar market and most people at my firm (fellow Big 4) are making 70k after two years. Doubt there is much difference between tax and audit.

Degrees like STEM, accounting, finance, business, etc. are just useful to get yourself in the door at a company imo. No one sticks to being an accountant their whole life I hope. That shouldn't be your goal. It should just be a skill you possess to be competent enough to run your own business after learning how corporations do things and how they structure things. Once you gain enough experience, then develop and start your own business.

I kinda did it backwards and it's working out, I started the business first, but if I had to do it over again I may have just went to school first and then started my own business as I'm saying ^ up there.

Work in a Major consulting company in the Financial and risk department : All the jobs and projects paying big loads revolve around accountancy and finance linked to it.

Opie you're clearly talking out of your ass : Accountancy can spread from the little accountant in a small local company to a guy making big loads in a bank.

This. Having a good accounting knowledge combined with communication skill you can easily move your way up quickly. If you're good you can get so much understanding into how businesses work that you can transfer that knowledge into almost any field.

It gets a bit of a bad reputation because of those who only see a stereotypical accountants at a small company in AP/AR functions who are little more than a glorified bookkeeper - these are not what the profession is.

I didnt even go big 4 or public accounting and i make just as much as my engineering friends

You're an idiot. You don't know about anything you're talking about. I'm at 3.5 years in ohio making 75k. That dude was in NYC working way more hours than me with high COL. He was being bent over and handing the partner the lube.

lol.

TBH idk why people are ****ting on an accountant degree, yes some people will not do good with it, but there are a bunch of good, high iq accountants, who are going to make bank. Accounting isn't easy if you want to do it at a high level, and takes just as much intelligence as any other tough discipline. (I'm talking high level accounting)

Just because you do an engineering degree doesn't mean you will be a good engineer, just as completing an pathway accounting degree doesn't guarantee you will succeed in accounting.

Also I love how tradesman are looked down upon these days, when it was the tradesman who were considered elite back in the day. How times have changed

I really wish I knew more accounting but would never want to be an actual accountant.

Imo an accounting background could be just as beneficial, if not more so than investment banking for what I do (equity analysis). But hedge/equity funds rarely hire analysts from accounting because the smarter/more driven kids tend to self-select towards IB/Finance early on because of the higher compensation.

HERE IS THE REAL DEAL WITH ACCOUNTING

EDUCATION : The amount of education needed to start at 55k is UNREAL. You are pretty much not an accountant without a CPA so if you are gonna do accounting you will need your CPA to make the big bucks. To do that you will need 150 credit hours from school (regular bachelor degree only gives you 120). This means you will need to double major (reason i did accounting and business management degree) or you will need to get a Masters Degree in Accounting or Tax... so that is about 6 years of schooling..Think about the money and time you are spending here just to start at FUKKKIN 55k a year working 60-90 hrs a week if you are lucky.... Masters in Accounting at my school was $36k alone.

CPA EXAM : So lets say you went through all the trouble to actually qualify for the exam you need to pass the CPA exam and it is the biggest piece of **** test possible. Some say that it is even harder then bar exam....to me it wasnt so much hard as it was BS with so much information. There are 4 exams and each exam you study for 2-3 months with soo much material only to get tested on maybe 10% of the **** you studied. The exam passing rate for each one of those is 40-50% so yes most people struggle with it and remember these are the people that got two degrees or masters in college. The fees for this exam quickly add up you are looking at 2-3k at least including the study material and thats if you pass all the exams on first try which is unusual.

WORKING FOR BIG 4 : By putting in the work you should mention that about 4-6 months a year you are working 70-90 hours a week during busy season and other time you are putting in 50-70 hours a week. You do this all for $50 K a year and when calculating hourly rate you get about $12-$13 an hour maybe less. If you can stick to doing this for 4 years yes you can earn 100k a year but you will still be working 70-90 hours during busy season and have no life. HOWEVER most people leave big 4 in two years (some smarter people less ) because they burn the fuk out...Only the no life losers actually stay slaving away at big 4 many neglecting their families to slave away for those fukkin companies.

THE WORK : The work is boring as **** no matter if you are in tax or audit. If you are in audit you are literally looking at numbers that the company reported and trying to get all the evidence to see if that is actually what they should have reported. So if company says they have 100k in accounts receivable you will get all their receipts and calculate that they did in fact get 100k in accounts receivable for the year if so check mark and move on to the next one. 99% of the time everything checks out so imagine doing all this work and its always correct BORING...the 1% it doesnt check out you dont get to say AH HUH i see you trying to cook the books nope....if you catch the company doing something shady you dont say anything negative about them because they are paying you to audit them. You try to work it out with the management and if it is really bad your audit firm will just leave the client... you wont be able to go out and tell everyone i audited this company and they are fukkin lying nope the company you work for will just drop the client. Tax is tax do i even need to say how boring it is ?

CLIFFS

You go to school for about 6 years spending 1000's taking 100's of exams to qualify to become CPA ...then you take 4 bs exams where you study 2-3 months for each exam and pay $2-3k in fees and study material to be able to start making 50-55k a year working 70-90 hours for about 3-4 months out of the year and other times working 50-70 hours. I DO NOT RECOMMEND ACCOUNTING TO ANYONE. The only reason i would recommend someone do accounting is if you plan on owning your own business which is what i did.
Well if you put it like that? Then why become a doctor? Why become a lawyer? All of these "respected" professions require you to put in massive amounts of work and pay large sums of money. Doctors have suicide rates twice as high as the avg population. Lawyers are unable to find jobs and have a ton of debt. It's easy to nit pick stats and show why certain jobs suck. They are obviously paying large sums of money compared to average househould(51k) but apparently everyone on the Misc is 10k/day CEO so it doesnt seem like a lot. If anyone could do it then they wouldn't pay that type of money.

What is your solution then? Start your own business? Okay let me just make a start-up and bank on the chance it succeeds because im gonna be the next Mark Zuckerberg... Yeah, okay dude. Keep telling that to yourself.

thats my point, not about the income threshold to stop posting on the internet, its about what conversations theyll engage in. I doubt your VP is on reddit talking about what makes him alpha and what he can do to pick up more chicks.
you're equating higher incomes to being sophisticated

You must really be fun at parties and social situations when you get so mad when people have different opinions then you instead of actually having a civilized debate you start calling people names and nagging them. What do you do in real life punch people that have different opinion then you ??

Most doctors will tell you themselves dont become a doctor for the money its not worth it. Only go in the field if you truly want to help people. I know this because i actually thought about going to med school and even went as far as shadowing few and their job is anything but glamorous . Lets just say after i shadowed them and talked to them i quickly decided it wasn't for me... most of them had a negative opinion about it especially the general doctor i shadowed.

Totally can understand why the suicide rates are as high as they are. As far as lawyers go i cant speak to that because i dont know much about the field other then that its oversaturated and its hard to get a job unless you come from a top school.

I am not saying starting a business is for everyone on here but i if you have accounting degree and some experience you are in great position to start one.
