So what? He used the same 100 to buy the good, and when he gives it to the shop owner the shop owner puts it back into the register. At that point the shop owner is even. The shop owner starts to lose the money when he gives the good to the robber (whatever the cogs was) plus the change.

Putting that 100 back is irrelevant. Whether he came back and paid with a card or a different 100 dollar bill is irrelevant. The new transaction is irrelevant. The drawer is short $100 dollars because it was taken.

Er, I'm not sure. I would like to consult Enguin for a second opinion on this.

I mean, the theif took $100 dollars, but then the owner paid for the $70 out of his own money, so straight away the owner is down $170. Then the owner gives him another $30 as change, but then the theif got the $100 + $70 from the original transaction. So that is imediately $270 that the thief is out of pocket. But then take into account the cost of the owner buying the actual stock, add $70 to that again.

And let's not forget about the theif stealing the $100 in the first place. $100; $70: $30 change. Man you guys are so stupid, I can't believe you are this old and still don't understnad the basics of money

Because a 100 dollar bill is not unique lmao. It just holds a value of 100 dollars.

Him coming back in with an ENTIRELY DIFFERENTLY 100 DOLLAR BILL would still = the store owner losing $100.

100 dollars and $30 + 70$ worth of goods is the same thing (ignoring excessive information) in value.
He exchanged the 100 he took for something of equivalent value. So he's still up 100 in value either way and the shopkeeper is still down the initial 100.

Or (what I fudged up the first time).
100 (initial money) + 70 (goods) = 170 dollars in the till (what he would have he wasn't stolen from).

100 (initial money) - 100 (money stolen) + 100 (money used to pay for the goods) - 30 dollars (change given back) = 70 dollars (money in the till).

170-70 =100 dollars.

Either way all you need to actually know is that 100 dollars was taken (100 dollars lost).

Say your local store got robbed and they took $7000 dollars from the till. If YOU go in the next day and buy $7000 worth of stuff, does it negate the fact they got robbed $7000 the day before?

The money is removed from the owner.
The money is given back to the owner.
Shoes worth $70 plus $30 in change is taken instead.

It is simply switching a $100 bill for $70 shoes + $30 cash.

I say the owner is out $100.

Must be trolling, no other explanation. So what if it's a different 100 bill, 100 is 100.

No.It is a different $7,000
exactly. If the robber returns later and uses the money he stole to buy something, its a different $100 (even though its physically the same bill)

Why are people making this so complicated?

A guy stole $100, no other irregular activities occurred

When he returned to buy things he paid like a regular customer and received the correct amount of change, who cares who the customer was or what bill he used

The owner is down $100 in cash that was stolen from his store, nothing else is relevant

They were robbed of 100 dollars. End of story. The transaction afterwards has nothing to do with anything. Just confuses you.

It looks like there should be a comma here (in bold), "He comes back 5 minutes later and buys $70 worth of goods with the $100 bill, the owner gives him $30 in change,"
Or at least a period should be there to make it clear it is a separate exchange. If you separate the sentence there, then you're saying the owner loses $100, because the thief bought $70 worth with the $100 bill he stole, and then the owner gives him $30. Otherwise there are multiple ways to interpret that sentence because it is not correctly structured.

Was the shop owner white or non-white? Because race does matter when it comes the meaning of "loss" and "gain".
