On the OP:

This argument about which generation is better/worse is stupid. In terms of living standards people alive now are ridiculously better off than people in the past (even recent past like 1970s or even 90s and 00's).

The frustration you feel, and I share, is the result of "progressive" governments seeking to control society in the name of what they consider the "public good".

We can't afford a house, not because "the boomers ****ed the economy" but because draconian zoning and building code regulations exist and are enforced. We struggle to find work early in life because minimum wage laws exist and are enforced. We struggle to start businesses because of minimum wage laws, tax laws and regulations on how we should conduct business. These regulations were pushed for by incumbent firms and their lobbyists to stifle competition, and it worked.

Big government has lead to this, not a generation of people.

But, make no mistake, people alive right now are better off than ANY human that has lived previously. The whole "the past was better" meme is the result of an uninformed mind. If you need the stats there's this websitehttp://humanprogress.org/

Notice the most crucial thing, the areas where improvements are being made are overwhelmingly in those markets where there is little government intervention. The areas where "stagnation" is occurring such as housing, access to healthcare, finding work are all markets where government has far too much of a role.

Baby boomers are the worst generation of modern times srs

They inherited a thriving economy from their parents and drove it into the ground

One of the best posts here. I totally agree. Will rep on recharge.

Based on what I've seen in my work, this is why some Emerging Markets are developing so much faster than us. Although they have their own issues, the lack of government interference in the markets has definitely created opportunities that would be impossible to achieve in developed countries.

My Mother even tells me that times were better in the Soviet Union than now lol. But to be fair, if we were to inherit a golden economy who's to say we wouldn't drive it into the ground as well? We're already messing up hard with the little that we did inherit. Apart from that, under our leadership things might get worse, we were kinda raised as a divided generation, and as cooperative as we can be those that get successful nowadays often fend for themselves. Maybe we'll pull through, I'd love to see it.

Reps. This is spot on. Governments in Western Europe/US/Canada etc are bloated with too many rules and regulations.

People are complaining about how hard life is in a society where you can be a millionaire for posting videos online weekly or playing video games while people beat off to the "mass skills" you posess.

I don't really care which Generation was best or which Generation effed up the most, but social media has caused the whole "Millenials are a bunch of stupid pussies" movement. You scroll through any social media platform and you see this constantly:

26 year Olds posting memes about high school.
26 year olds posting memes period.
"5 year old "Transgender Boy" banned from Boy Scouts"
"[Insert click bait feminist "wage gap" or "discrimination" article title here]"
Literally every child has either Anxiety, Depression, or AD(H)D
"High School starts too early "research" shows"

It's a joke honestly. Blaming EVRRYTHING on the previous generation has nothing to do with people in their late 20s acting with the mentality of a young teenager. Every generation sucks and every generation has their own heap of issues. BB had the economy to fuk up, X had housing to fuk up by loading up on loans they never had a chance to pay back, and now Millenials have social issues to turn the country into a literal running joke.

The only trend through all of it to me

Is complete individualism

Everything is a step toward more individualism; whats funny is if you think about the pre-fix "in" you see that its the beginning to "intelligence" as well

I think, though, that it stagnates and goes through cycles because humans are also social. I.e. complete inidividualism isnt possible. So once humans evolve to full capacity, the only place to go is devolve

Its like what you see with social issues. Were a "needs" based species, and because of this, "needs" can also be translated as "problems". A "need" to get food to survive is also a "problem" that we always face. Thus, humans always create problems. And when you take away the need to survive - we create new "problems" - i.e. social issues

One would hope that with more intelligence, though, we could make each cycle a small setback

People seriously were starving and homeless, got sick with no help and died. They went through all of this, only to have to go fight the most deadly war in history. Then, somehow they came back and build the greatest economy in the world. They made one mistake, and that was spoiling their kids and turning them in to a generation of entitled *******s, we call baby-boomers. Most of the things the baby boomers take credit for, such as the civil rights of the 60's, were actually due to the efforts of Greatest Generation, the BB were nothing but college kids making a stink protesting and crap. They actually did nothing.

Baby boomers took everything their parents made, and milked it to past the limits, and now we have to pick that crap up. It's kind of like one man starts a business, and it is going good, then his kids take over.... the BB'ers are the kids.

With that said, I will say the Millenials are doing some cringy crap. These failure to launch snowflakes with their safety pins who can't figure out what gender they are and crying because their candidate didn't win the election. The only thing the BB'ers had going for them was their dad and mom whooped their asses when they got too bad, these milenials have never even been told no before.
Will legit recite this post irl if I ever get into an argument on this subject.

This is daft. You could say the same about kicking a ball or throwing it into a basket, only a miniscule amount of outliers can do this.

If you look at some actual econ stats instead of pulling stupid chit out of your arse you'll see things are pretty bleak economically for the millennial generation.

Much more so. They ignore all rules, traditions, eschew judgement and walk around in vacant mental states. They seem to find no tranquility in anything, are rash, quick to judge and slow to change.

Their dependency of pharmaceuticals began much earlier and is greater than their parents, which causes their mental state to become a mass of fluctuating impulses.

Their connection to media should make them 10x smarter and yet they spend the majority of their time engaging in frivolous social media rather than using this valuable resource in improving their society.

This critque on millenials is pretty spot on. I've noticed that in myself and my friends. A lot of anxiety over the things we can't control, which is ultimately a waste of time. I've begun to meditate and read more philosophical things to quell these unproductive thoughts myself. Ultimately finding peace in your life will bring you more satisfaction than any material possession or following the latest fad as advertised on trash sites like buzzfeed.

A lot of the issues I mentioned in the original post had to do with massive, complex issues that involved millions and millions of people (e.g. housing crisis, spiralling healthcare costs). And because the baby boomers were political and economic leaders when these things occurred, they carry most of the blame with those mistakes. But everyone suffers. Originally I just wanted to vent and went on a rant, but I think there's an important lesson to be learned here.

Whether you're a baby boomer, gen x or millennial, you have a responsibility to think not only for yourself and family, but for your fellow man and the community you live in. On an individual level, this mindset is crucial in a sustainable capitalist society but is woefully missing today. You can be greedy but at least be long-term greedy. Why were the greatest generation so widely admired? They went through hardship and cared more than just about themselves. If more people could realize the power they have to change the lives of others around them, we'd be in a lot better place.

Also, I'm surprised no one mentioned the world's population growth as a factor of decreased prosperity. No generation has control over demographic forces, as policies can only affect births slightly. A more free labour force and globalization has increased competition, so it's a lot tougher to find good jobs in 2016 because you're competing with billions rather than thousands. The more people we have on the planet, the harder it is to keep everyone at a decent wage. I think by 2050, we'll have around 9.7B people, crazy.

Better late than never.
What was the question again?
Boomers are at the helm, and have run the ship aground and want/need millennials to fix it. Something to that effect.

I recognize that we millenials have our own issues to work on. We're far from perfect. But has a generation screwed up this badly considering what they were given? Remember how the US gov't almost shutdown and threatened refusal to raise the debt ceiling?

Pissed off that our generation is catching criticism from a group that needs to look in the mirror and shut the fukk up.

I'll leave you with this stat: "Even at Donald Trump's promised 3.8% annual growth rate, the percentage of children able to outearn their parents rises to only 62%. Many economists predict that the US is likely to grow at around 2% a year."
Truth.... millenials are all about cash money and helping others. Boomers boomed up the whole country

Well I'm pretty sure millenials are boomers' grandkids. I remember in the 90s when millenials were born hearing first time parents all exclaim they'd be a "friend" to their children rather than a parent. Look how that turned out. I have noticed that a lot of people my age having kids are encouraging more outdoor activity than millenials' parents. I remember kids in my neighborhood would compete for snow shoveling and lawn mowing territory, millenials wouldn't even know which end of a shovel to use. Here's to hoping there will be an upturn in attitudes.

The biggest issue I see with millenials is their pathetic work ethic. Obviously not all but I work in an assembly plant and the under 30 crowd is the laziest bunch of people I've ever seen. They don't come to work and when they do, they try to do their job with their phone in their hand. It's called work for a reason....

When I grew up, a phone call from the school meant I was in trouble. Gen-ex'ers changed all that. If their kids did bad in school, they blamed the teachers.

I chit you not, the police were called into the local primary school because some kids put another (albeit actually autistic) kids participation certificate in the rubbish.

These kids are 7 years old.

The incident was described as "horrendous and cruel"

I think there are some positives born from the minds of millenials, though. Startups, crowd funding, tech (i.e.) bitcoin are shifting power away from criminal banks and corporations.

I can't wait until they're all dead (very, very serious).

Strong use of tax dollars to create more coddled kids. Not teaching them to problem-solve on their own will hurt the kids more down the road.

Edit he is actually 8 or 9

It's worse than that brah, not only is that a waste of time and money, it's a waste of time and money that could be out towards the cause of the problem, the kids home life.

I know the kid, he is my old best mates younger brother, his mother is an alcoholic, who has been arrested and in rehab, his dad was a typical stoner until he was forced to get a job, they live in isolation, in a tiny shed, he has two other brothers living there ages 1 and 4, his older brother (16) just died in a tragic accident and his oldest brother (my mate) has his own kid with a deadbeat sloot to worry about, they have been in and out of fostercare etc.

I'm not gonna say he is a god kid, I is a little chit but he does have a good heart, he is smart and had potential to be a good athlete

I realise they can't take the kids away, but instead of bringing in the cops and making a fuss they could try help him find a better outlet or something

That's a heartbreaking situation man. Feels.

You're right that the short-term 'solution' to bring the police over does nothing to prevent it from happening again. We as a society has fallen so low that we just put give out band-aid solution on kids so they get out of our way (started with ritalin pills). Just sad.
