There is even stronger evidence that humans can shape their DNA just by thinking about it... willing it to happen... creating our own perceived stimuli about the reality around us.

Elephants have no more painted a thing than human has trained a dog to do tricks. Recognizing yourself in a mirror is not the defacto standard of awareness. You'd be hard pressed to convince anyone that Leonardo da Vinci painted the last supper to continue his genetic line considering he never married or had children.

Lmao it has been shown that if someone has very different opinions from you, debating will most likely just further both of your origional opinions soo yaa

Anyways davinci painted for money.

And I never once said the actions taken would directly lead to children, just that everything we do is based on innate desires which serve to increase the likelihood of having surviving children.

Just because someone does not have children does not mean they are not motivated to do things that, if they had children would improve their chances of survival.

Anyways there are no solid rules in psychology/anthropology so there is always exceptions.

No, you explicitly stated multiple times that we have no direct control and that we are slaves to biology. Yet, incidents like the Jonestown Massacre where hundreds of people committed suicide overrides any biological or evolutionary norm that you can present. Priest, Monks, and Nuns routinely choose celibacy over sexual relations ... that does nothing to further DNA replication.

I never said you have no control, but in the end the result is the same, everything you do is based on reproduction - or a reward system in place to increase the likelihood of.

Stop thinking about the actions of individuals and think about the cumulative effects of groups of people acting specific ways for extended periods of time.

A 1% difference in base survival rate of a group compounded over thousands of generation has an enormous effect overall, but one person's actions mean essentially nothing in comparison.

Your view point has so many holes and you keep reframing and stretching your base to accommodate everything. You just said:

"Just because someone does not have children does not mean they are not motivated to do things that, if they had children would improve their chances of survival."

You originally went from DNA replication... then to an individuals chances of survival. On that point alone your broadening your base to fit your paradigm. Historically Da Vinci was likely homosexual and was accused of sodomy which is punishable by death in his time. Those choices don't even improve individual chances of survival ... and it certainly does nothing to replicate DNA.

You act so fervent in your view point and then you say there are no solid rules...
And I never once said the actions taken would directly lead to children, just that everything we do is based oninnate desires which serve to increase the likelihood of having surviving children
Committing suicide does no increase likelihood of having children. Taking a ride on a rocket to the moon doesn't increase the likelihood of having children. I can come up with hundreds of things that do not serve DNA replication and that also when compared to the animal kingdom are completely irrational to self-preservation.

You're changing your base again.

By some estimates the death toll of WW2 was over 100 million people (5% of world population at the time). Other species are known to kill within their own species but humans do it to an extent that is beyond what is considered a reasonable evolutionary advantage.

Remember when I said that I may seeminly contradict myself because I'm typing on my phone? Ya that's that.

When I said individual I meant their genetic line as I did every time before.

Your view on sexuality is so limited in view I'm not even going to respond srs.

Lmao I'm fervent that this is an overarching theme within 99% of cases. You are so stuck in the microscopic sense.

This is the last thing I'm going to say to you srs, I hope you can extrapolate it to the broader picture and understand.

If 5 men go into the forest, none prepared to die for the others, and 5 other men go into the forest, each prepared to die for the group, which group has the higher chance of survival - however small?

Just because an individual does dies for the froup not mean that the expected probability of his survival is lower than the expected probability of survival of the men who act alone

Now imagine this situation happening millions of times

Apply this to anything that seems to go against individual interests, you will see that mathematically actions that do not seem directly help an individual, still leads to a higher chance of their survival, and as such their children's.

Didn't read the rest of the thread, but there's a misconception that the ego is seen as a bad thing.

A lot of problems come as a result of ego, but that's not the same as rejecting the ego completely. The ego is a normal part of being human. To try too hard to reject the ego is, in itself, an egoic pursuit.

The way I look at it, from my own personal broscience point of view, the parts of the mind that constitute what we see as the "ego" are essential for survival. They're the programming that drives us to find food, to mate, to protect ourselves, and so on. The part of us that distinguishes us from other animals, the neocortex, is the part that can also potentially somewhat transcend the rest of the mind. Meditation and mindfulness strengthens that part of the brain.

Ego is a part of us, but just like you'd see it as a bad thing to give in to your perfectly natural impulses to just dirty bulk on junk food or give in to your every desire, the same argument can be made for egoic pursuits that are taken too far, like the relentless pursuit of money and power (e.g. Scarface or Wolf of Wall Street, for obvious examples).

One to the specific actions you take on your life which are still geared towards reproduction, the other to mechanisms we use to shortcut reward systems in our brains.

No, you contradict yourself because you're all over the place in your viewpoint and have no firm ground. When you first stated that i gave you some leeway but now its aparrant that the statement goes to the core of this whole thread...

you're protecting your ego. Giving yourself an out to save face and protect your viewpoint despite strong logical arguments against.

Your first non trolling statement on the first page was:
You are actually the most deluded type of people.

The arrogance required to think that you are special or different is so strongly in contradiction to your trumped up stupid idea of "ego death" and you can't tell.

You are literally a DNA replication machine and nothing more.

Get over it.
You spent most of the following posts arguing how individuals and all their mumbo-jumbo are at their core just DNA replication machines. How we aren't in direct control and that we are subservient to our genetic desires and chemical status. Now you've switched to it not being about the individual and about the group (the bigger picture). That also has glaring holes in logic.

I understand quite clearly. I've contemplated your viewpoint in the past even to the point of free will being an illusion. I ultimately rejected the viewpoint because it is weak.

I don't know how to explain to you that individuals can exist only to reproduce, but still behave in ways that lead to them personally not reproducing, because these behaviours lead to a greater chance in the baseline probability that they would have reproduced.

I'm not saying you don't have free will, just that everything you desire, you don't desire for any other reason than to help you reproduce.

It's maths, not opinion.

Your brain makes up its mind up to ten seconds before you realize it, according to researchers. By looking at brain activity while making a decision, the researchers could predict what choice people would make before they themselves were even aware of having made a decision.

The work calls into question the β€˜consciousness’ of our decisions and may even challenge ideas about how β€˜free’ we are to make a choice at a particular point in time.

β€œWe think our decisions are conscious, but these data show that consciousness is just the tip of the iceberg,” says John-Dylan Haynes, a neuroscientist at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig, Germany, who led the study.

β€œThe results are quite dramatic,” says Frank Tong, a neuroscientist at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. Ten seconds is "a lifetime” in terms of brain activity, he adds.

Anyways all of this is simply psychology talk. In the end, we are to survive, nothing else. Thanks to technology making lives easier and free of certain diseases, mankind are able to pursue their desires and give quality to life.

Our egoes seperate us from garden snails.

Ego is pride
Ego is ambition
Ego is drive

Lack of ego = depression.

Never listen to people who strive to achieve ego death.

Those people are weak and have given up.
A few points.

First, whatever...

Second, what separates us from garden snails is consciousness, thought, subconscious, unconscious, not ego, ego is a false sense of self, but again, what ever..

Your making a massive generalization. Most of the most successful people make their money then find it unsatisfying and turn to a more spiritual life of less ego. Ken Keyes gave up a life of 35 million dollars for a spiritual life of no ego and found true happiness. Im reading his book now.

Ego has nothing to do with ambition and drive. Not for most western folk. Budhist are different of course.

Ego death have nothing to do with weakness. These people are light years Above you man. Your still a very low conscious person only slightly above an animal.

In the end it depends on how you define ego.

Ego is the cause of all suffering because you always have something to defend and everyone is a threat to your ego. Were all on a path and you my friend have a loooong way to go.

You can still have goals, be successful and have an ego death. Im definitely interested in it.

Lack of ego = true happiness

I most definitely still have an ego and also have a long way to go. This the truth.

At the end of the day, a person with ego lacks self worth/self esteem, feels inferiority and over compensates with an ego to make himself feel better.

Stating that humans are just DNA replicating machines is not a statement of mathematics. Good luck proving that viewpoint mathematically if it were. I'd like to see that proof when when you publish it.

yea i dont think that disproves free will. i think it may alter the definition of "free will" though.

i think that just simply means our brains can get caught up in a certain way/ line of thinking - based off of habits, neural connections, etc.

but that doesn't mean they can't change.

however, i do believe our decisions are made off of a set-system in so far as the "system" is a sort-of-free-will

Some of the wealthiest and most charismatic people I know irl have the lowest ego and are generally humble, whereas people in the somewhat upper-middle class have the highest ego / arrogance as if they're trying to prove themselves to others. (srs)

I think it just means that decision and awareness/consciousness are not congruent. Which would explain why habits (like you said) are so hard to break.

I wrote something in my journal not too long ago:

"The duality is real. Sometimes the primal mind is so strong that the conscious mind becomes a casual observer... fully aware but almost helpless to change the script; Like the audience at a movie or play."

If you were to ask me why we are really present in the universe i would say something like, "To learn and transcend our primal being and attain a higher state of clarity."

That other poster keeps talking us being DNA replicating machines. You can see in my signature that I've done some crazy chit. Biology drives us to take the easy path and expend the least amount of energy for the most gain. Hiking 2200 miles and all the stresses involved in that completely contradicts biology. No other species does some of the wacky things humans do in the pursuit of knowledge and clarity.
