At what age is it "ok" to give a child soda?

Went to a popular fastfood place today and overheard the woman in front of me tell the cashier that the boy with her was about to turn 3. I then watched her pour the boy a Cherry Spitre from the freestyle machine and eventually watched her hand him a milkshake after they ate their meal

Honestly felt like I was watching child abuse and wish I had spoken up. I don't have kids so I never really thought about it before today. Am I wrong in my point of view? At what age is it ok for children to drink soda? I don't remember being that age obviously, but I can't remember a time drinking soda before the age of like 10+

Of course I notced her talking on her cell during the whole meal and even heard her tell the kid to stop asking her questions. After I finished I walked outside and saw a Mercedes incredibly poorly parked across the lines and thought "that has to be hers". She walked outside right after me and confirmed my hypothesis

A cup of apple juice and a cup of soda is basically the same thing

Sugar amount the same and calories the same. Nothing rly more "healthy" about the apple juice then the soda

At least there's no caffeine in sprite but it's still not healthy. I don't really drink soda so my kids won't have too much exposure to it, 7 or 8 is kinda where I'd probably draw the line. I certainly wouldn't want my kids drinking any significant amount of caffeine until they are in their teens though.

Actually, clear liquids in general tend to be better for you than the dark ones. This is one reason why they serve ginger ale in hospitals.

It really depends. My youngest daughter, 7, is diabetic. When we go out to eat, sometimes we will let her have a small cup of a diet soda, because the other drinks just have too much sugar and will make your BS go very high. We do tend to go for Sprite Zero/diet, but few places have it anymore. A clear soda is, in fact, better for you than a dark one. Lastly, remember to always use moderation. A diet soft drink here and there has no impact on your health.

If it's in moderation, like a treat or something, I don't see why not.

Surely there is a massive difference between diet and regular and 2 vs 7. The woman poured herself a diet coke after handing her 2 year old son a regular Sprite with Cherry additive (which I assume is 100% sugar) right before she handed him a regular milkshake. How is that ok under any circumstances?

Thinking about it more, I should be tarred and feathered for not speaking up

ITT people aren't minding their own business.

Obv no way to know, which makes this thread a dead end, but that kid could get 1 milkshake and 1 soda per year and you were unlucky enough to be offended by it. I don't think it's a good thing either but I learned a long time ago that you can't run around and save everyone. Let it ride

I agree that like 90+% of us are doomed from birth, but is there ever any legitimate reason to give a 2 year old soda, even as a reward for being the best 2 year old ever?

Mind your business, *******.

It's not the end of the world if a kid has a soda. Parents give their little kids fruit juice which isn't any better and no one blinks an eye. Ideally, it's probably better if they don't have any, but it's really not going to make the slightest difference.

...you regret keeping your mouth shut? You will be my first neg.

While I don't think its the best thing in the world, there are lots of other worse things than a soda-ignoring your kid is one of them. She may have been a ****ty mom OR she may have just been having a really bad day.

I always find it to be true that people who don't have kids are always judgmental about what other parents are doing. For one, and trust me on this one, its a LOT different once you have your own children. You may not give them soda but I can guarantee that there will be things you said you wouldn't do, that you will most definitely end up doing. That's just how it is.

There were things that I was judgmental about before I had kids that I now do. (ex-occasionally using movies as a "babysitter".I am in college and I absolutely have to do this so I can study when my husband is not home to help. Do I feel guilty? yes) Your post says you do not have kids.....just lmao!!

repeat this to yourself tonight op till it sticks in your head

I DO NOT HAVE KIDS

I DO NOT HAVE KIDS

I DO NOT HAVE KIDS

oh and lol at imagining you going up to that mom and telling her not to give her kid a soda. Raise your own kids when you have them.

So if everyone else is making a mistake it's ok to make the same mistake? Would you serve your 2 year old soda?

To answer the question directed to /\ above poster yes, I have let my child have a small amount of soda. Its called having balance. like others have said soda is no more worse than a candy bar or whatever. Ive also brushed something off that they have dropped on the floor (5 sec rule lol) Let them watch more than 30 min of netflix a day, eaten desert before dinner. Its not gonna freaking kill them .

Do you really care THAT much about what someone else does? good gawwd. You sound like a playground mom lol....you a woman op?? Did not know men could be like this too.

do you also police what adults eat. Say you go to a restaurant and see someone ordering something fried-Do you go tell them how unhealthy fried foods are for them?

Let me guess

you must be a religious vegan
exercises 6x a week
is in tip top shape
doesn't watch any television
has never done any drugs
doesn't drink
doesn't smoke
doesn't drink soda
no coffee/caffeine
doesn't eat anything with any form of sugar in it...
only eats low carb
low fat
gluten free
organic
free-range
fair-trade
and uses only "green" eco friendly things

The difference is I'm in my 30's so I know what a terrible mistake I'm making by drinking soda, a 2 year old has no idea. If other adults want to harm their health that's their choice

I probably have one of the worst diets on the misc. I eat fastfood 7 days a week but at least my parents gave me a chance before I was of age

I don't even mind if you give your 10 year old soda, at least he has some idea what's going on, but a fricken 2 year old? He should be drinking water or baby formula

A cup of soda isn't going to kill a child.
If their day consists of only soda, then that parent is ****.

We've got people in this thread who drink alcohol, do drugs and eat ass criticising a parent for letting her child have a cherry soda.

I didn't use that to justify giving a little kid soda. It'd be best if no one drink worthless sugary beverages. I was saying that it's absurd to want to scream child abuse and verbally attack some mother for giving her kid a soda when there are dozens of other parents giving their kids the juice equivalent right behind you that you didn't care about and because it's really not that big of a deal. It's not the best choice but they'll be completely fine like the millions of kids guzzling down apple juice with breakfast.

No I don't plan on giving my kid soda. What point are you trying to make with that? I don't plan on it but I don't care if someone else gives their kid it. I'm sure there are plenty of parents who disagree with some of the things my kid will eat. Big deal. If your kid eats a burger, should people be able to call child abuse because red meat is linked to cancer? Fist yourself.

where the hell did I EVER say giving a 3 yr old soda was ok or justified it?? What I said was people who do not have their own children usually worry about what others do -only to find themselves doing some of the very same things they thought they wouldn't. Not saying its going to be the same scenario but some people say "oh i'd never spank little sarah: only time outs for our children" Then when timeouts dont work, they get frustrated and spank, or whatever. My point is if you don't have kids, you cannot say "I wont / wouldn't do this or that"

..and no, soda is not good for kids, neither is juice, or ANY TV time at all, but we are all imperfect people just trying to do the best we can. Sometimes you mess up or have a bad parenting moment. Hopefully people mature and learn from their mistakes as they go. People don't need random strangers policing them and telling them what to do.

If you think that is ok then YOU are bat chit crazy.
