Its about being better than yourself, competing against others is a bit of an illusion.

As far as OP equating that to money and possessions, LOL.

ALL the the most successful people in the world did whatever it took (no 5%'er) to be the very best, #1, and in the process alienated a lot of people from their lives

Warren Buffet, George Soros, Elon Musk, Larry Ellison, Jim Simones, Nick Tesla, Thomas Edison, Jordan, Kobe... etc etc

For people who are saying if you compare yourself to others, it's over for you...

How else are we supposed to think? I'll be honest, I want to be better than everyone else at everything I care about. I want to have a better body than everyone, I want to make more money than everyone I know. Obviously I never achieve that to its highest extent, but when I'm higher on the ladder than most people, I feel good. This is the whole basis of competition. Why would you not want to be better than other people? Why would you want to be average or in the middle of the pack and have nothing to offer that a hundred million other people can't offer?

They don't understand man, they think they're buying designer clothes and posting pics on ******** for themselves. I wish we could all just be honest with ourselves and cut the BS because life is shallow and people are judgemental materialistic slaves to money.

I just want power & love. I don't nescessarily want things and riches. Buying cloth and food without looking at the price tag would be nice though.

Agree that competing with yourself is bullchit.
If a 100 m runner ran a 10.1 but was the fastest man in the world, he would be happier than improving his time from 10.1 to 9.8, if Bolt still runs a 9.6, in my opinion and personal experience, anyway.

So to those of you saying life is about accomplishing goals, what goals do you have that aren't competitive in nature? I'm talking long term life goals, not a goal of restoring a car, or hitting a moderate lift. If your goal is to become a great fighter, you have to become the best to really achieve that goal, because your comparable people around you will make you feel like you have not fully accomplished your goal if they are even marginally better than you. Your goal is relative to the bar set by the best or the best. If your goal is to become successful, that goal will never be attained unless you become a multi billionaire and even then, it is natural to want more. More may not be financial, more may be power, or status. I can tell you from personal experience, the bar always changes when your goal is financial. You become content with the luxuries you have, your goals then shift to focus on something more.

That isnt saying you cant be a happy person if you are constantly climbing the ladder. But to say life is about achieving goals, you cannot completely accept that your goal has been accomplished when there are others that are better than you in that field.

srs.. if there was nobody around to see anything nobody would be working on goals "for themselves."

I'm genuinely interested in what different views people can have other than "I achieve goals for myself." because that's obviously bogus. No you don't, you just somehow think it's alpha to say **** like that. Or you know you'll never be good enough at anything so it's a coping mechanism.

I'm open to a different way of thinking, but I haven't seen anything convincing yet.

Op is right but not absolutely right. But why, why, why, oh why do some of you guys make contrasting ideas so black and white?

-Face it we all care what others think about us, maybe not at the same degree as others, but we all do. We all may not give multiple fuks, but at least one. It feels good to have an influence others. Why do we post shirtless pics on this forum? So we can be mired and compare physiques with others. Why do you guys think most non-avis are thought to have dyel physiques? Because they know they would be clowned and know that they are inferior to those that are aesthetic.

-At the same time we also shouldn't give many fuks and just focus on us. If we focus on trying to be better than others, then are we truly living for ourselves or for other people? We give others power if we live for the sake of wanting to be better than they are.

I'm comparing a person's performance in life to a sports teams performance.

What happens when people lose money or a job? They're depressed. What happens when a sports team loses a game? They're depressed.

Anything can disappear at any time. I don't understand where you're coming from.

If you find my philosophy of life so wrong, what is yours? And what would happen to your state of mind if you lost your job/got injured or had a major unpredictable emergency where you lost a huge chunk of your savings? It's gonna be hard for you to convince me that you'd still be just as content as you were before those things happen.
