No really there isn't.

Entertainments about performance.

That's why you need drugs and sloots to attract you to the venue, not some marvelous talent people are clamoring to see.

Tbh I play guitar and a bit of piano, was in a band for a while and also produce edm and in all honestly it is easier for me to write/produce a decent song on traditional instruments than in midi on synths.

Most people in bands are fairly talentless too.

But in the end you don't go to concerts and edm festivals for the same reasons so there is no point comparing.
I have a dream, that one day, my username will be ironic.

Sorry bro, but you're wrong.

You don't know what you are talking about.

If you have ever worked on any sort of musical endeavor, you would at least respect what artists are doing even if its not your cup of tea. It's not easy to create a musical project; edm or not.

You kinda got a point. Imagine Mozart or Beethoven having a computer, where they can just program their stuff. Electronic music could well have been the future of music. Than EDM was invented...

Uh homie, I minored in piano in college, played for around 6 years now.

Took many music classes, songwriting classes, vocal lessons in college as well.

I have a functional understanding of mixing as well as engineering.

I've used FL for 10+ years, Reason for about 7.

Have sold beats for money as well, getting away from that in favor of songwriting cause I'm tired of working with broke losers TBH.

But yeah either I know more about music than the average person or you think I'm lying.

Back to what I was saying though: EDM is garbage.

beyond that, the possibilities in electronic music are literally endless

actually by far the easiest thing about DJing. from a technical perspective, DJing is really easy. playing music in a niche genre and being able to get a crowd to enjoy it through proper set programming is the difficult part. this is why guys like Carl Cox and John Digweed are revered in the electronic music scene - their ability to wrap people into their sets with masterful track selection and flow

all that music background so you should know most of what makes it to the top is garbage in every genre, electronic music is no exception. the general population accepts/prefers watered down, accessible music. beyond that for example i don't enjoy country music but i bet i could find a bunch of music from that genre that i genuinely enjoyed if i looked

there's plenty of electronic music that is actually impressively musical

Most people aren't producing sh!t. They aren't sitting at a computer with a DAW recording the bass line, plugging in a synth to compose new notes, melodies, or chord progressions. They're dragging and dropping loops and samples into the program, adding effects over the top, beat matching...that's not "Producing." That's "Arranging."

Right on. Having the experience you do, I am surprised that you hold this opinion. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of music did you produce on FL and Reason? I actually used to do a little producing myself, but now I just mess around on the guitar and DJ a bit

Personally, I'm not a big fan of EDM, but I do think there is good electronic music. Specifically, synthwave or that vaporwave retro stuff I find pretty cool. However, in my opinion nothing can beat a good old fashioned band that are a master of their craft. It seems as if most EDM concerts all the artist has to do is hit the play button and adjust volumes.

Here's a link to a band that I think is exceptional, most of you probably have not heard of them at all. AFAIK many of their songs use custom tuning and the vocalist never uses auto tune.

From a compositional standpoint I can respect some electronic artists. However the fact that there aren't actual musical instruments involved, the complete absence of the group dynamic between musicians on stage, and the lack of spontaneity like live riffing/soloing, changing tempo etc. means that a live show is pretty much pointless unless you are there for the drugs/sloots/lightshow/dancing. Which is cool, if that's your thing then that's great but lol @ people who are "there for the music".

Everytime people try to defend EDM the throw up a picture of a huge festival. Let's be real tea EDM festivals HAVE to be a spectacle. They have no alternative but to take the focus off of the "artist". The "artist" typically do nothing more than hit a button dance around, throw their arms in the air and pretend to turn knobs as if they are actually applying input to the music...

...and let's be real tea there are dozens of YouTube videos of top EDM artist hitting play on a Mac and then messing wth buttons on a piece of equipment that doesn't exist. There are videos showing famous EDM artist and their mixing equipment isn't even plugged into the board. There is literally no physical way their input is making it into the sound board. Let me guess, all the hard work (snagging loops, playing around with a drum machine, and layering one handed ridiculously easy piano parts) was done in a recording studio prior to the "concert"...LOL just LOL

....and as a previous professional touring musician I don't know a single muscian that takes EDM seriously. For most Muscians, assisting with the production/recording of EDM is literally one step up from teaching music to children at the local Guitar Center.

This is the "music" you are paying to see "live"....

And a pimply faced virgin with zero piano skills can layer and loop that so actuality your argument is invalidated....Just because he has those skills does not mean he needs any of them to produce EDM.

I've heard nerds that couldn't carry a steady rock and roll 4/4 beat on a drum kit if their life depended on it use a drum machine to create a part Dann Carey couldn't play..
