Videogame Sales Are Fading and Its Crushing GameStop
damn.....
GameStop may need a new start. The videogame retailer released details about its holiday sales Friday, and they weren’t pretty. It’s yet another sign of the eroding business for physical games.
Sales at GameStop fell 16.4% in the last nine weeks of 2016, the company said, compared with the same period a year earlier. Shares of GameStop tumbled 9% on the news, to $22.50.
All sides of the gaming business contributed to the decline. Even the hot new Nintendo NES Classic device couldn’t make up for big drops in Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One console sales.
And the company struggled to sell new video games “due to difficult comparisons to titles launched a year ago,” according to a press release. But it’s not just that some big 2015 games did well. The 2016 versions -- like Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, released in November -- did particularly poorly.
GameStop shares are down 16% in the last 12 months. Investors are paying just six times estimated earnings for the stock. That price-to-earnings ratio is 66% less than what the typical big stock gets.

A few sales numbers for ONE business over a short period of time isn't an indication of a trend in the video game industry. Perhaps do some research before posting such a headline?
I don't play video games, so I have no stake in this, just an observation.

You can blame digital downloads for this and the inability to transfer games over.

Because gamestop has very few ways to make money from pay 2 win f2p games on PC and mobile. The best they can do is sell gift cards.

They have way too many stores, they are cannibalizing sales. How many different gamestops does a town really need?

There are no games over that last couple of years that are awesome.
Many games, at least for Xbox are online multiplayer games, which suck because there's no story, players do not act like it's real, so they run around killing, jumping up and down, and it's so repetitive.
Or you have depressing open world games like Fallout. I read almost no one finishes these games. They are boring with no sense of mission, and so they seem cool at first, or appeal to autistic people who cannot take intensity and focus.
Game companies seemed to have given up and/or are going for making boring stuff because they sold in the past. That's great but if you make all games like that they won't appeal to a broad fan base and sales with die. When they start making games with a great story, a need for tactics, etc then sales will increase.

Physical stores in general for a lot of industries are essentially obsolete now. This doesn't mean video games are declining overall
Though I think overall video games are sh*t now

1. Physical sales are fading, due to the inevitable full switch to digital within the next 10 years.
2. It WAS a particularly bad year for franchises, especially compared to 2013-2015 which had huge triple a title releases in all major franchises. CoD didn't even sell this year, a rarity.
3. Sales of games overall have never been higher, it's just F2P games and digital that are taking the market.

Forcing employees to badger customers is never a good strategy. Couple that with poor pricing and destroying/discarding games that don't sell and you really piss people off. If they would just fix this aspect, they'd much better off.
The switch to digital and the lack of good games clearly doesn't help, but those are secondary. The fact there's still 360 games being sold for more than ten bucks is a joke(outside of "rare" ones). If they would have huge sales dumping their inventory of old games, or even just lowered the prices to what they should be, it'd be night and day.

Normally I don't like a long running store chain to go under (jobs are jobs) but Gamestop has straight up been hardcore fuking over it's customer base forever. Their business model is to twist the knife in the back of gamers so good riddance

They'll be dead within a few years. There's already a growing number of games that can be downloaded onto consoles via xbox live and PSN.
