Then you're wrong. BTW, BOB should contain some cash too. Good luck brah.

Find this kind of sad because I had what you could call a bug out bag packed from the age of 8 to the age of 16... It was just a rucksack packed up because my parents were abusive and I figured I may need to leave on short notice, I wanted to be able to just pick it up and go not spend 45 minutes walking around the house collecting toilet roll and wetwipes and soap etc

Dumb arses like him are in victim mode and think they have it all figured out. Cuz we all decide to drive straight for man made disasters and such. It's hard to fathom cognitive dissonance and denial that bad, but that's how most people live today. Does the US and Canadian government recommend a basic BOB for the hell of it? Does some goofy miscer know something they/we don't? Nope. Them canuckers:

Probably one of the first things I will do is just shoot a MFer and take theirs, so there is no need to prep. Even if you do, you are probably going to be robbed and killed by a mob for your stuff anyway.

You're my favorite poster OP srs, would be your mate irl.

I've always thought about creating a bag like this. I have an emergency box of items which i would grab in evacuation/fire, but not a BOB.
Will look into making one

Even the CDC has a zombie survival guide.
https://www.cdc.gov/phpr/zombies_novella.htm

People have gone complacent, lazy, and take creature comforts for granted. You really don't have to over think it. If you have to evacuate immediately, at least have the basics to crash on your friends couch for a few days: Cash, Meds, ID, keys, phone, important papers (insurance cards, Passport, etc). A central location to grab your stuff, lock your door, and leave.

You can take it further, and have more (first-aid kit, shelter, water purification, fire starting, clothing, defensible weapons, am/fm radio, etc). This will allow you to walk out, and survive without a couch to surf on. Most people though don't have the training and skills to use it, but hey, better than nothing.
I'm not blessed with riches, but I am rich with blessings.
Thank you, LORD, my God.

I'm not against a BOB by any means but I certainly think you're overstating the usefulness of it.

In a planned evacuation for disasters with notice 95% of those supplies aren't going to make or break your survival.

In a disaster with next to no notice such as an earthquake or tornado your survival largely depends on your immediate shelter such as an earth quake resistant dwelling or a below ground shelter.

I went through the list and a lot of those supplies simply wouldn't make or break survival in a populated area.

Katrina:

Drowning (40%), injury and trauma (25%), and heart conditions (11%) were the major causes of death among Louisiana victims. Forty-nine percent of victims were people 75 years old and older.

The causes of death in Katrina would't change much if you gave every victim a BOB. They died because they were unable or unwilling to leave, not because they didn't have a fire starter tool, swiss army knife, or copies of their medical files.

If you live in an area below sea level that's hurricane prone, you need to know when it's time to get out, how to get out, and where to go. The laundry list of supplies is secondary and more convenience. The whole "or you'll become a statistic" argument is definitely overplayed.

Basic and essential stuff, and perhaps a decent reference guide in the bag, most people can figure it out long enough until some help arrives, hence the 72 hour window recommend. Beyond that, more complex stuff, is another matter. I don't have the training for long term survival on my own and my BOB does not contain stuff for it. I do LOL when I see things like fishing line and animal snares in people's BOB, unless they are legit survivalist types. I'm not. I can however make a quick shelter with a woobie and poncho, open an MRP, and start a fire with some cotton balls soaked in vasaline and a lighter.

I've got one packed with the following

Tactical knife
Flashlight
First aid kit
High calorie vacuum sealed food bars (basically 7,000 calorie power bars)
Water purification tablets
Personal water filter straw
50' Paracord
3 bandannas
100 rounds of 45 ACP ammo
30 rounds shotgun ammo
Magnesium fire starter
Stormproof matches
Wool blanket
Advil
Blood clotter
Hand crank radio
4 AA batteries
4 AAA batteries
Swiss army knife
Potasium Iodine tablets
Duct tape
Breathing mask (filters dust)
Poncho
Solar blankets
Pepper spray
Survival candle
Two 32 OZ canteens filled with water

And $2,000 cash that's separate from the backpack but easy for me to retrieve

I think that's it. All in a tactical backpack sitting by my bed.

would add a couple .50 cent BIC lighters, and a cheap collapsible saw.

Ever tried starting a real fire with a magnesium stick or a couple matchsticks?

Oh, and a light tarp

Got it, so the CDC, Canadian gov, Red Cross, etc, etc are just throwing it out for no good reason. The rest of what you wrote is irrelevant. Survival favors the prepared, plan for the worst, hope for the best. If not one damn thing in the BOB helps a person in a given emergency, nothing lost. It it does, you may need it badly, and need it to survive. Or, it may simply make your experience less horrible until help arrives or you find help. Would you rather have something to sleep on, some water close by, a little food, and a radio with you until there's help for say 2-3 days or nothing?

This is not rocket science. Just basic survival info. There's a reason those who actually do that chit for a living always recommend a basic BOB. Always.

Oh, and a light tarp
This. I have magnesium stick as last ditch, but bic lighter and cotton balls soaked in vasaline in a zip lock is soooooo much easier. I follow the three rule of fire and water: three ways to get it/make it from the super easy to the difficult. Large trash and a mil poncho allows many options for shelter and chit too.

Agree with OP on the efficacy of being prepared.

Do you know what is the most prominent theory of what caused the bronze age collapse? An earthquakestorm. Combine that with raiders, food shortages, lack of resupply, civil unrest caused by all of the previously mentioned things, and any place can become third world pretty quickly.

We're at the mercy of this planet, anyone who thinks otherwise will pay the price for their hubris.
It is not so much the major events as the small day-to-day decisions that map the course of our living. . . Our lives are, in reality, the sum total of our seemingly unimportant decisions and of our capacity to live by those decisions. ― Gordon B. Hinckley

Would you rather have something to sleep on, some water close by, a little food, and a radio with you until there's help for say 2-3 days or nothing?

This is not rocket science. Just basic survival info. There's a reason those who actually do that chit for a living always recommend a basic BOB. Always.
At the very least, they should have a back up plan for water. What if a water supply is contaminated? Bottled water would be gone from stores within hours. People really underestimate how close we are from slipping back into savages if **** falls apart. A large solar flare is my worst fear since its the likeliest thing to happen. Can you imagine no power nationwide for weeks/months? And it would be more countries than just us. No one wants to fix or prepare for it.
