Today I did a good pull up workout. I did 150 reps for time. I did the first 50 as chin ups with 40 lbs, then 50 pull ups with 40 lbs, then 25 BW chin ups, then 25 BW pull ups. I did it all in 18:03, though the weights fell out of my back pack on the 90th rep and prob cost me 30-45 seconds. That's a good workout for those inclined.

got 20 reps (1 of them with too much kipping so 19 +1) yesterday, would love to be able boost that up to 30 reps to make it into the OP

Do any of you guys have a workout routine that you follow to boost pull up rep numbers?

good job!.. when I was going from 6 - 20 pull ups I did the armstrong pull up program along with my normal workout and then doing pull ups every time I saw an opportunity.. I dont follow that program now I change it up a bit.. Since I feel that I am stuck around the 25 pull up range I have been doing a lot of weighted pull ups.

so far my max weighted pull up was me weighing around 165 with an extra 90lb weight. But I normally just use around 45lbs of additional weight for as many reps and sets I can do.

but you have come to the right place, I have gotten a lot of pull up workout ideas from the experts in this thread.

my goals are to hit 30 pull ups, clean up my muscle ups and to be able to do them more often and then.... successfully do a clean one arm pull up

I've plateaued hard on weighted pull ups... for several months now I'm basically losing strength and gaining most of it back, but never quite reaching my previous peak let alone beating it.

Very frustrating. I'm trying to lose weight so I'm lighter and also so I can eat in a surplus again to see if it makes a difference.
Death is impossible for us to fathom: it is so immense, so frightening, that we will do almost anything to avoid thinking about it. Society is organized to make death invisible, to keep it several steps removed. That distance may seem necessary for our comfort, but it comes with a terrible price: the illusion of limitless time, and a consequent lack of seriousness about daily life. We are running away from the one reality that faces us all.

For those plateaued pull up junkies, here are some of my favorite work outs. Feel free to use them or modify them to your current level. Note, I do pull ups two days a week, very intensely each time. I have also experimented with total number of reps, and have found for me that a total of 160 reps works best for my goals of max output in a minute. If you're not used to that high volume, try not to increase total volume more than 10% over the course of a week.

1. Max reps with 80 lbs in a minute (dropping from bar allowed for this and all subsequent sets for this particular workout). Rest 4-5 minutes. Max reps with 60 lbs. Rest 4-5 minutes. Max reps with 40 lbs. Rest 4-5 minutes. Max reps with 20 lbs. Rest 4-5 minutes. Max BW reps. Rest 4-5 minutes. 50 BW reps for time.
2. 100 reps for time with 40 lb pack. Rest 5 minutes. Max BW reps without dropping from bar. Rest 5 minutes. Max BW reps without dropping bar.
3. 150 BW reps for time. Great if time is short. 100 BW for time is also good if not used to that high of volume.
4. 5 sets of 1/2 your BW max off of 1 minute rest. Dropping from bar not permitted unless absolutely necessary. Note: this is probably the most taxing of all of the workouts. Because it's so tough on the body, I do it sparingly. Your forearms are guaranteed to be massive by the end of this workout. Also note that I believe it not to be possible to do 5 sets of 1/2 of one's BW max off 1 minute rest without dropping from the bar. I think once I did the first 4 sets without dropping, but usually I just make it through three. After finishing this workout and taking 4-8 minutes of rest, I will often finish with 2-3 sets of BW 20 chin ups off of 4-5 minutes rest.

Those are 4 of many that I do, but four workouts that should help all of you get to the next level.

Good job! That's some hard work. Some advice, which you can do with as you please, would be to consider clenching your glutes as you do pull ups. That prevents any breaking at the waist, which allows a cleaner rep. Also, candidly, while there was a small adjustment period for me when I started clenching my glutes as I was doing my pull ups, it eventually allowed me to do more pull ups more quickly since there is less body movement and the up and down is a more efficient movement.

Try doing some chest to bar weighted pull ups for time. Consider as max reps in a minute with a 45 lb plate, then rest 5 minutes and do max reps in a minute with a 25 lb plate, then rest 5 minutes and do max BW chest to bar.

Start the pyramid with one repetition, the next set has two repetitions, the next has three. Continue in this fashion until you miss a set. (e.g. your last set was five, your next set would be six, but you could only do four. You missed a set) Do one more set at a maximum effort. Rest 10 seconds for each repetition in the previous set.
My first effort I got up to 8 reps before missing a set

Nice! Looked like you nailed it. I'm not the judge here, it's usually Extremist or EPC, but they may ask you to get a full view of the weights too. Looks like you could kick on some extra weight. Good stuff.

Also, for the Armstrong, I have done that. I usually only do 5 seconds of rest per pull up instead of 10 seconds because I get impatient. I think my best is up to 14 or 16 or somewhere in that range off of 5 seconds rest per pull up. Maybe one day I will try off 10 seconds. Or maybe I'll try the Armstrong with 10 seconds but use a 40 lb pack. Hmm. That could be interesting.

I'll attempt the 30 rep pull-ups this week. I'm in the 20s, but 30 is definitely difficult.

Yeah the angle of the video isn't great and the full plates aren't in picture. Gym was absolutely packed and that was the only spot to put my phone to film it

I'll probably give it a go with 132lbs added this week anyway. And I'll be at the gym a bit earlier so should be able to film at a better angle

You got it. Get it done! Though I hear you with camera angles and crowded gyms. I've had many of those.

Also, I tried the Armstrong workout this morning while wearing a 40 lb pack (10 seconds rest per pull up). I got up to 11. Not bad. Great workout suggestion. Appreciate it.

Wow, sounds great for grip strength! Never done long hangs with weight. But inspired by a Cunanan post, I have done 1 rep, hang 5, 2 reps, hang 10, 3 reps, hang 20, 4 reps, hang 30. Great way to burn out at the end of a pull session!

Did 2 plate chins for the first time. got 3 reps but last was a grinder

switched over from pull ups to chins cuz I was stuck for a while. making steady progress on chins so far.

feels badass to finally have 2 plates strapped around lol. I've never seen anybody at the gyms I go to pull this much but when I search it on YouTube half the results are fuking women lmao...

when I get to 3 plates I think ppl will really be mirin
