And the truck attacker was stopped by an armed policeman? Yeah, it's almost like we put armed coppers where these things are likely to happen. A bit like what I said in my original post. When 50 coppers are killed because none of them had a gun and they were trying to club someone to death you'll have a point.

Agreed. However, being a cop is not one of the more dangerous jobs one can have in the US (1) , but that may be changing as there has been a rash of attacks directed at police due to race baiting chit heads, etc here.

Might want to check your reading comprehension there cock breath. I've stated UK police are adequately equipped for their jobs as you can't compare their situation to that of US cops.

I personally believe more police should be armed but I wouldn't hand every bobby a gun. We don't have an armed citizenry like the US do, we don't have anywhere near the number of firearms in circulation, we don't need routinely armed police.

By all means, give them all tasers but don't just start handing out firearms.

This of course excludes Northern Ireland where the police are routinely armed for obvious reasons.
I mean I hate to be a dick, but is that what they are going to tell his family at his funeral? Like "hey sorry your husband got stabbed to death but it's a price we are willing to pay by not arming all of our police"

And that'll only make cops jumpier so more people will get killed unnecessarily, so more people will blame cops etc.

I can sympathise with US cops and I've actually had a fair few arguments on ******** about it. They have to be armed because every kunt else is. They have to make split second decisions that could be the difference between life and death. It's a sht situation to be in.

I'm also saying that doesn't apply over here. Something similar did apply in Northern Ireland a while back when the IRA were armed with heavy assault weapons and actually targeting the RUC (police) and as a result the police were routinely armed. The frigging army were essentially fighting insurgency there until 1997 as well.

It's proportional. The majority of cops don't need guns here. By all means train more firearms officers but don't give everyone a gun for signing up.

I've seen a few police confrontations in England. If overwhelming numbers is really their protocol, I think it's definitely silly and pretty inefficient as well.

I've also never understood the equal playing field argument either. At the very least you could severely injure someone by throwing a bladed weapon. When you consider death is a possibility, it should be allowed for UK police to use deadly force.

Always boggled my mind when people make special considerations for the offenders, in lieu of safety of the law abiding policeman who's risking his life to protect citizens.

I very much doubt his family will be out calling for the police to be armed. Like I said, it's different over here. Plus, there's a chance the twat got the jump on him. It'll have been chaos during the attack, do you think he'd have just wandered up to Armed Abdul and given him a hug?

That's the point. Of course there's armed people where the "important" people are. The rest of you, and your cops, are on your own. The most rampant pro gun control people we have in the US have armed body guard around them. Apparently, our life is worth less than theirs. See the issue?

Got it. Please tell that to the children of that officer who was just stabbed to death cuz a gun would have been of no value in that situation.

I'd hope so, but from some of the comments here, more head in the sand approach vs "getting it" as you can see. UK cops deserve better.

Having the most cameras on your citizens than anyone in the world is nothing to be proud of, caught after you rape or klll someone not much use to the person raped or killed, and my understanding is crime was not impacted by the cameras.

I'm astounded any citizen there would expect their police to do that job with minimal means to protect themselves. Obviously, very different mindset between Yanks and Brits there.
The UK doesn't really have an equiv of the FBI/SS etc. The closest is MI5 but that's an intelligence agency/security service. England's laws are universal with no state level law and so there isn't a need for a federal police force. The Met (London's police force) get assigned extra money for providing services like counter terrorism and diplomatic protection because London tends to be the hub of that. All the officers that work in their units are police officers and to get into something like PaDP would have had to have gone the route Police officer -> Armed police officer -> PaDP.

To answer both of you at the same time. I think it would ultimatly cause more death than it actually prevented. The details of this aren't even out yet on if a gun would have prevented this, if someone comes up to you and puts a knife in your neck and you don't have your gun already drawn you're ****ed regardless. There's armed coppers in my local McDonald's at about 11pm. You see them all the time now.

Also, I live in Durham. The only thing close to a firearms incident here is a farmer getting a bit depressed and blowing his own head off every few years. I don't think we need to start handing out AR15s to stop students getting a bit drunk and pissing in the street or local "yoofs" drinking cider in a park.

And as I've said above, his family won't blame the fact he wasn't armed. That's not the mentality over here.

Rookie street cops shouldnt have guns. That goes for all first world countries. A system in place where only officers on the job 5 years with a good record should be promoted to having a gun.

All good. As I said, I expected he was a cop some kind or other similar.

What would more likely happen, if done correctly of course, is more deaths of criminals and less of cops, and of course serious injuries to cops that don't kill them, but that does not mean you don't want to avoid that if you can by shooting your attacker. I know UK police suffer serious knife injuries, etc that does not lead to death. That's a conversation for you all to have and not for me to decide, but I (per OP) can't watch such a vid, see news an unarmed cop stabbed, etc, and not feel your people are getting less than they deserve.

OP was not UK bashing as you can see. Was with all due respect to your hard working cops who risk their lives with little means of defense and for me, that just aint right.

No cause we allow our populace to have guns dummy.

Lol at how many Brit users are on today whining about US cops and thinking their own police is so much better despite what just happened. Terror attacks in the US are elaborately planned. This attack in the UK was just straight up plowing people with a car and stabbing an unarmed police officer to death right after. In the US, the attacker would have been either shot by armed civilians or cops, the vast majority of whom are armed, before they would have killed so many people in broad daylight. Most of our attacks are in closed in locations like schools, this was outside of Parliament and it took far too long for the police to take them before so many people got harmed, this kind of attack would never work in the US where not only the average cop carries guns, many civilians do as well.

Why shouldn't the rookies be able to defend themselves?

The U.S. is the worst example of policing in the world. Making that comparison is not something you'd even bother to defend.

You may be right. I guess time will tell on that one. Me, when I saw that cop on TV begging for his life in France before they shot on the ground, I saddened me greatly. Maybe a Yank thing, but best to go down fighting and take some with you then cower on the ground.

No, that's one of many reasons we are able to be armed and why the Founders of the country considered it essential to a Democracy. Or as I respond when people say "why would you carry a gun>" the response is "cuz carrying a cop around all day gets really tiring" and so forth.

We as the regular folk don't get armed body guards protecting us, and in my view, no politician, nor King, or rich person's life is worth one damn iota more than mine or yours. You may feel otherwise.

A goofy idea, but I will say US cops would benefit from far more training and ongoing training, and every cop I know agrees on that.

Nah if they can't disarm criminals with expert technique then lol what pathetic idiots. I mean who can't? Lol at a gun. Strong cope m8

They should easily just take on knives/guns/any blunt object and win every time without ever making a wrong decision/move.
