Is anyone else genuinely surprised that $800 wasn't taken by somebody on that plane?
Seems like it is a 1.5h or so flight with a usual price ~$200 or so...
Not fully sorting out the PNR pre-boarding is a complete bush league move on United's part.
The second bush league move was bumping a revenue passenger for non-revenue passengers. Don't know of a single airline that would do this (some have even paid for crew flights on competing airlines to avoid this).

Gotta love capitalism. They oversale seats to maximize profits.
Of course in REAL capitalism the plane would be forced to raise the offer until someone bites. Sale to the lowest bidder.
Not this crony capitalism bullchit.

But phuck me. What a horrible, horrible experience it is to travel anywhere in this country. You literally get nothing besides a seat for the price of your ticket these days. Please don't tell me a small cup of coke or juice and some peanuts is "something". You have to pay to carry a bag of a decent size, pay for any sort of normal food on board the plane, so you literally rent the seat for a few hours and that's it. Can you imagine they started charging on Greyhound or Amtrak to carry a bag, or if you get into a cab and he says "That's an extra $20 to put the bag in the trunk". I've done a few long coast to coast trips the last few months and each experience is just horrible.
You wait in line like a phucking moron for 30+ minutes just to go through security, because they only have the minimum TSA staff on and 2 out of 5 xray machines going. Then you get through security and everything suddenly increases in price inside the terminal about 1000% ... brb you cant bring liquids through security ? That's ok we'll charge you $7 for a bottle of water because we know you don't have a choice.
Then if you haven't purchased the expensive tickets and can't board first, you have to pray to god there is some overhead space left for your carry on to avoid have to pay $25 for a bag. Then the whole time, these phucking kunce are overbooking the flights to get every last cent and in the meantime, screwing over people when there are no seats left. The thing they don't tell you about the $500 they give you if you volunteer your seat, is that your next ticket is a standby. So basically you take your $500, some of which you'll have to use towards a hotel to stay the night at the airport, then when you get there the next morning and the previous flight is cancelled, you are even lower on the standby list because all the people on the cancelled flight are ahead of you.
Literally the best experiences I've been having lately are on JetBlue. If you american kunce weren't so patriotic and didn't suck the dinks of American or United or Delta until the cum dripped down your necks, and supported the smaller airlines who actually provide a 1000% better experience, they would be able to compete more aggressively.
BRB fly on JetBlue ... free wifi for the whole flight (last American Airlines flight I took, they wanted to charge $12 for wifi ... lol), the most amount of legroom out of any US carrier, endless supply of free snacks (full size bags of chips and popcorn, not these phucking midget sized bags of things with 5 peanuts in there) and drinks, and boarding is done back to front so even if you paid a cheap price for your ticket, you can still get a seat at the back, board first, and have the first shot at the overhead bins.

And possibly sit in the airport all day, hopping from flight to flight, until they had room for you on standby.
I also thought that if you volunteer to give up your seat your next ticket isn't a standby ticket but I guess that can depend from airline to airline as well.
Gotta love the Europeans who legally mandate cold hard cash with a long-term delay.

Where he was born and grew up is certainly relevant to the story tho. If he had been born in the U.S., I guarantee you he would have just got off the plane without incident.
In China, the police and security teams have less power than in the U.S. He obviously doesn't understand much about America, thinking he could fight them and they would leave him alone. (if you raise enough fuss in china, you can usually get away). That isn't the way it works in the U.S. Anyone who grew up here knows that.

Cops shouldnt handle civil matters.
If someone sneaks on, yeah its cool for cops to use force and remove them. But not a legit customer whos minding own business.

Don't overbook.
Offer cash not vouchers.
Up the cash until someone voluntarily takes it.
Let the people already boarded stay on and don't allow any more to board.

Generally crew can fly in the jump seat if it's available, or if there are free seats. But to kick off a passenger for a commuter crew? That's messed up.

I know the fine print most likely allows United to do this, but you can't just put anything you want into a contract. There are certain consumer protections you have to follow.

This happened to me going to Vancouver.
Bought my ticket like 4months in advance for cheap. WC women's tournament was the same day I landed. Airline oversold the flight by 20 tickets. To people who prob bought that week for 5x what I paid.
Got kicked off the plane was so pissed.

they could have said no you cant enter and made him/someone else be the one need to force his way on physically - rather than the other way around
unless i misunderstand what denial of boarding means in practice
