Money. There aren't .gov supplied 'surplus' or whatever hand-me-down rifles in 300 like there are in 5.56.

Money. 300 blk ammo costs more than 5.56. Also, LE departments can get in on state contracts for ammo, etc, and I'd be surprised if there was any 300 blk on any of those, but I bet there's .223/5.56

Money. The rifles cost a little more because there is far less competition than there is in the 5.56 rifle market.

LE generally likes to use something that has big time testing behind it, and that testing is expensive and time consuming. Fortunately the FBI does a whole bunch of it and the LE agencies can just go by that...and I'll wager there's a lot more data on the performance of loads available for .223/5.56 than 300 blk.

I went to pick up my third Shield yesterday. My FFL was visibly pissed, I didn't know why. About halfway through me filling out the 4473 he just started going off on me about buying guns online, he ain't selling guns any more, all he does are transfers, etc. It looked like his inventory was down a good bit, and my guess is he may go out of business soon. I can understand his frustration but a $35 transfer fee is perfectly reasonable for the work put in. I've bought at least five guns directly from him and done at least a dozen incoming transfers. I try to support local business but I can't justify paying $100 more for the same exact gun. His base Shield with plain sights was $395.

I'm done buying guns of course but even if something came up I think I'll avoid him from now on. Kinda sucks.

Yeah it's probably hard for them but you can't expect people to pay so much more. When I transferred my shield the FFL fee (I didn't check beforehand...should have known better) was$50...the cheapest basic shield in their case was $419.

IDK how they expect people to buy anything from them or use them for a transfer more than once.

I had a min-version of that with my transfer guy once, he has a small little shop in a strip mall and like 15 pistols/10 rifles/shotguns on the shelves at any given time. I was picking up the black friday VP9 for my dad since he was out of town and he asked what they were selling them for and shook his head when I told him, said they basically are selling them for no profit or even a loss during crazy sales like that and there's no way to compete.

That said his transfer fee is like 20-30 bucks can't remember specifically and his prices are competitive enough under normal circumstances that I bought my LE VP9 from him for 640, on grabagun right now it's listed for 610 so after shipping and transfer it's equal.

The gun club I belong to is usually pretty cool about it. They admit their prices are higher than online and I think they just get a high enough volume of people who either don't know about online buying or who just aren't that interested in shopping around and to it all works out well for the LGS in the end. Most of the time I am buying, I am getting a deal they just won't match. That G19 + mags deal was one where the guy just laughed and he said he was showing everyone who came in what a sick deal it was.

If I can find a gun that I am interested in locally for very close to the same deal found online, I would go that route. But it so very rarely happens. When I first got the gun bug, I had no idea you could buy online so I didn't even think about it until I found out later how all that works.

It took me awhile to try ordering online for the first time, seemed like such a headache. Of course it's usually stupid simple.

Fortunately I do have an LGS with fair pricing. Standard Gen3 Glocks $500, Gen4 $550, rest of the stuff similar to that which isn't bad and often competes with online when you account for shipping and any kind of transfer, or maybe sales tax is the only difference which I can handle

California needs to Fck off and die

I'm trying to get reciprocity so I can practice engineering in CA and it is a freaking nightmare.
In literally every other state all I have to do is forward them info from a record database I filled out one time and pay the fee and I can get reciprocity.

In CA I have to get new sealed recommendations from 4 specifically licensed references, send sealed copies of my college transcripts, pass a test on their state laws, go to a test center and pay $150 each to take two additional 2 hour tests, pay their processing fees (higher than any other board I've seen), and go to a certified fingerprinting facility and get signed and sealed fingerprints taken.

It's because Smith and Wesson is cancer on small gun shops. As I mentioned before they have no MAP program or "Minimum Advertised Price". Average dealer cost from 3 separate big distributors on a SW Shield 9mm is $343. There are several places selling Shields for less than that not counting the $75 rebate. SW gives stocking dealer discounts and constant buy 5 get 1 free deals without a MAP. If you're a small dealer that stocks 1-2 popular guns it's hard to drop $1715 on 5 shields to get 1 free to compete on the cost of $285. Then there is the issue if you are sold out of those and you're stuck competing against the big online guys at the $343 price vs their mass discounted price.

Over the next 12 months we're going to see lots of small shops closing. The only ones doing any good are those making holsters, offering range time/training, or doing actual gun smith work or modifications. Your small dealers are done. So be prepared to see $40-50 transfers or greater on future online purchases.

This isn't even considering the bullsh.t local taxes we put up with. The margins on new firearms are razor thin. We're lucky to make $20-30 on a new gun. Sadly the margins would be better if the state and local governments didn't take 8.5% sales tax. More often or not that 8.5% is higher than the profit on the gun.

That's why small local shops are a dying breed.

Your FFL sounds like a retard. $35 probably isn't much less (if not more) than the fuking profit he would have made off a Shield anyway and had to sit on the inventory for however long. You don't make much money on pistols. At all. Literally dealer cost on a Gen 4 G19 is $475. (Yes, Glock does have a program that allows you to buy X amount of guns ONE time a year at a slightly more discounted price - but for the most part, it's not worth mentioning.) THEN you have more fees on top of that. If you don't place a big enough order, guess what? $25 shipping. If you aren't set up net 30 with your distributor (which a LOT of small gun shops aren't) - guess what? 3% credit card fee. So to even get that Glock into your shop costs you $515. As you can see - there's no fuking money to be made there. You just don't make money on guns unless you're moving tons of them. The average small gun shop makes their money on accessories and misc parts. It's the only thing with decent profit to be made. Ammo - same thing. Unless you're moving a LOT of it (which, again, your average small shop just can't do) you're literally making maybe 10-15% markup on ammo.

Wow. Subtle brag, I'm glad my local kitchen-table ffl only charges $15/transfer for the first firearm, and $5 for any additional in a single order. He also only lives like 6 minutes from my house.

We charge $20. It costs $2 anytime you do a check on someone.

The best thing about having a shop is the ability to pick up some great bargains on used firearms. Like we've mentioned in the above posts, new market is ****, but pre-owned is solid if you have enough people selling you guns. That's why pawn shops continue to exist.

1. Use an FFL finderhttp://fflgundealers.net/
2. Call around and compare transfer costs
3. Pick the cheapest

The problem with a lot of these shops is they charge more because they have overhead(rent, employees, utilities, etc). This is where the garage-type ffl could possibly thrive. My friend who got his FFL last summer sells in volume and not in high price margins. He makes only about $15-$20 per gun after taxes but moves so many guns that he could probably quit his day job. He only charges $15 to transfer to the public and ends up getting more and more customers buying stuff from him because the low transfer price brings more people into the shop.

The only disadvantage is he doesn't keep much of a gun inventory. So if you wanna hold something then you will need to go to somewhere to look at it. It doesn't appear to have affected his business doing this though. He keeps holsters, mags, AR accessories and ammo in stock and people typically pick those things up when they're in the shop.

I was using a home-based $20 FFL for a while until he got unreliable on me. He completely disappeared for a month, wouldn't respond to voice mails or emails, wouldn't answer phone. I finally showed up to his house and his dad answered the door. Told me he was in a wreck and was at the hospital. There were other guys showing up looking for him. This was the Black Friday VP9 from PSA, who doesn't give you tracking numbers, so I couldn't find out where my damn gun was. It was around the same time I had my wreck and when the fukker finally showed up a couple weeks later, he was better off physically than I was. Even if you are in a wreck you need to let people know what's up. These are guns, not stuffed animals. I figured paying the LGS $35 was fair, knowing he would be around and I could go there for pickup any time during business hours.

I know it's a tough business, and yeah most smaller shops are probably going to go under in the next few years. Like Hutch and Relent said if you aren't selling a ton of accessories you just won't make it. So we will all be buying guns online sight unseen in the future. Plus I'm pretty sure they will find a way to start charging sales tax on all online purchases.

Good thing I have all the guns I'll ever need. No more gun purchase trouble for me.

Which Shield?

That's the vibe I get from all my dealers around here. It's always awkward transferring in guns/shipping them out.

Performance Center 45. I really like it. They should definitely extend the grip texture to the other Shield models. The Hi-Viz light rails are really bright in anything but total darkness. Shoots nice and flat. Trigger is far, far better than my base 9mm.

The other one I got is a Performance Center *cough*40*cough*. Haven't shot that one yet. I ordered an IWB holster for the 45 and we'll see how much harder it is to carry than my base 9mm with night sights. The tritium night sights are an obvious advantage over the Hi-Viz in very dark situations but in full light there is no contest.

Sweet. It really is shootable? I've been eyeing the performance Center 45 too. I'm just worried that it'll be a bitch to shoot. Also curious what bullet velocity is out of a short ported barrel.
