As a 'middle manager' on $140k you probably don't have the power to grant that much leave to an employee of only 1 year
Deloitte would definitely have policies about taking sabbaticals, how much unpaid leave people can take etc. If he can just grant leave like that then what's stopping every other employee asking for the same thing and being like why can't I take 9 months off and come back like that other guy did?
leaving his job for 9 months means someone has to replace him for that period or there's extra work for everyone else to pick up the slack.

It's actually a mix of all three and then some.
Number 2 would be my first choice with the background you gave, so long as I could hire a temp in his place.
Number 1 is an option if I can't hire a temp and he's foolishly burned all of his annual and it's only April.
Number 3 is an option if he decides to do it the day after asking me and I haven't even had the chance to help him or myself with the situation.
I don't like mixing personal with business but I know it's part of the job when you're managing a group of people because life is life. To me, as long as I can comfortably still get things done, my subordinates can take whatever leave they want, when they want.

im in accounting at the moment last year of my degree doing accounts payable/receivable for a medium sized construction company and working with another accountant, so my question is....
can you actually blacklist people? because thats a scary thought if so..
and lets be real op most of those cogs would suk dik for a few months then start doing dumb chit like the guy youre mentioning..
and op can i ask another question
Im 22 now but whats my chance at working in a bigger firm like yours when im around 25? as of right now I have 2 years experience in finance, and Im doing the accounting for a construction company so by 25 id have 2 years experience in finance and 3 years experience doing accounting stuff between that construction company and a tiny accounting firm?
Btw my gpa was too low to apply straight for top graduate positions, my gpa in the last year is 75% but first year had some personal problems and failed alot.
Can inbox me if u get time instead.

i would replace it with another cog, why?
because that other cog is willing to work without taking a break. That cog is willing to give up good things such as travel to pursue career development. A person that is willing to give that up is more deserving of the position.
EDIT: Also just lol at all the commerce cucks in this thread (this is from someone that holds a commerce degree at a top university).
No you won't earn 150k with 15 years of experience with or without an MBA in any role, the truth is you wont ever have the talent to score a 200k-300k salaried role which is only offered to a small minority of very talented individuals.
You are a CUCK nothing more, nothing less. You will die as one of those "stick in the mud type" greying and balding dudes that has plateaued at a mid management level and has been around the company since forever. Do not have hopes and dreams because I guarantee you it is already dead.

After accounting for hours spent at work, sleeping, excercise you'd need at gyms to maintain your physical health as an officecel working 80 hour weeks, and meals outside of work, you're left with about 23 - 31 hours of time per week for time with your kids, wife, leisure activities, chitting when not at work, etc. No thanks, Jeff. I don't know how people like you do it, OP. The only way I could ever work that much is if I were running my own company so I could take a lot of personal pride in maintaining my own business, but not as a corporate officecel slave.

Ife he is a hard worker and you see potential, I would go with option 2. When he returns he can start from the bottom again to get back up to speed. If he is just a regular worker I would go with option 1. Option 3 would never be an option for me.

- Been with Deloitte for 12 years since you graduated @ 23
- You started managing your own team 5 years in and have 7 years experience
- You have a 3-bedroom house with 10 years left on mortgage, drive an Audi A5 and have a wife/child
- You have never travelled because you jumped from university to graduate job (60 hours) to management (80 hours)
- You make $140,000/year with an annual bonus of $40,000
A graduate in your team who went through the university experience from 18/19 to 22/23 doing a 3 year Bachelors and 1.5 year Masters in Economics now has 1 year experience in your team aged 24. One day he approaches you out of the blue in private and says he wants to travel the world. You knew that he spent his annual leave doing hikes around the state that you live in but he wants 6-9 months off to do Everest Base Camp, Machu Pichu, Kilimanjaro, Mount Blanc, Mount Fuji, Annapurna Circuit, 7K Volcano in Ecuador, sit at the edge of Grand Canyon, etc.
When you ask him why didn't he do it before starting the job, he replies that he wanted to get some experience on his CV. So when you follow up question why right now, he says he wants to do it before turning 26, and aged 25 when he's young, has energy, desire and before he commits to marriage/mortgage/it becomes too late in general. He says that he will be back after a maximum of 9 months and continue the job from where he left off. You pay him $50,000/year starting fresh out of college and he gets a $10,000+/year annual salary rise if he sticks to the job, just like you did.
Do you:
Option 1- Replace him in a day for one of the 5000 other cogs waiting at the door who will literally do what you say, when you say it, how you want it, however many hours you want, and not ask for any time out? This is, after all, the corporate world and you are in charge for the day to day running of the division and need committed members and this will play on the back of his mind and he will grow to despise you and hate working for you.
Option 2- Respect the honesty, respect the fact that he had the balls to approach you face to face, man to man, admire the fact that travelling and hiking is quite a big ambition in his life and allow him the time off, unpaid ofcourse, but restart him with the new graduate intakes and take him under your wing to train him up and nurture him into a future manager with the new found life experience.
Option 3- Say no, and if he leaves anyway, speak to your contacts at all of the other Big 4 firms like PwC, KPMG, EY, and other corporate firms who he may apply to when he gets back to get him black-listed for walking out to do what in your eyes is a "free spirited hippy thing" despite having an opportunity that most graduates would give an arm and a leg for.
Which options would you choose Misc? And why?

actually, why would you even consider option 3? seems pretty low.
lol, so just because he might want to quit, you would try and blacklist him from joining other firms later on?..

Face the fact that your job sucks and no matter how many hours you put in you're never gonna be a director or running your own department. Congratulations you have done well in your career but you're stuck bro. You don't have the balls to go out there and sell yourself or pursue a unique opportunity or start your own business (coz returns for the first few years will be far less than what you make right now) and you can't afford it. Your wife will leave you.
I would feel the same way if I was in your situation but keep slaving away and have fun at the middle management ceiling for the rest of your life.
The highlight of your career will be maybe your Indian CEO who cucks you daily will shake your hand once at a boring corporate even and give you bs about your bright future. You will come back to the misc and post the thread "rekt beta indian today at work" while crying because you'll never be in his position.

I kind of chuckle about the perception of power people have of middle and upper management. Im an old guy and have been in my career for 20+ years and subsequently have worked my way beyond middle management (no e-brag). I have PLENTY of limitations in what I can and cant do at the company...
I cant just fire people
I cant give raises above a certain percentage
I have to have a detailed performance plan agreed on by HR to resolve poor performance
I cant give out promotions on a whim. I have to build a business case, seek approval and then budget.
I cant approve financials beyond a certain percentage
If it isnt in my budget I have to go through a senior level executive approval process to spend additional money...(Insight - I really dont want to have to do this because it makes me look bad. If you avoid putting me in this situation and give me a solution things will probably go your way if I agree with you).
I cant give people "6 months off" to go explore the world.
Corp America is about checks and balances based upon liability. If you understand the limitations that are in place based against a checks and balance system it prepares you to ask for promotions/raises more effectively and to understand your risk if you are being singled out or are a "bad employee"...

Why don't these people take 1 or 2 vacations a year instead of wandering around for 9 whole months?
Honestly getting high exposure in a condensed period like that you'll probably forget 80% of the details because you're constantly doing something new.
I suppose I would tell him to take normal vacations like everyone else or find a new position. Sorry but there is apparently hundreds of others willing to work like dogs and if he wants to go AWOL for a year then he clearly doesn't want it that bad *shrug*. Wouldn't black list him though, that is dumb
