Have ability to retire young, but don't know what to do? (wut do misc?)
I got very lucky working in the oil industry. Not going to play it up like I'm extremely talented, smart, or hard working or anything. I was in the right place at the right time with a startup.
I wasn't sure whether to make this thread or not. It's not a brag thread. I genuinely don't know what I want to do with the rest of my life. I have the funds to do pretty much anything I want, or nothing at all. I don't want to keep being a wagecuck for the rest of my life, but I'm not ready for a full LDAR lifestyle.
What would you miscers do if you didn't ever have to work again?

If I had enough money to never work again in my life
I would probably wake up at 5pm, eat breakfast go to gym, play video games/misc/netflix till 5am then go to sleep and on the weekends get chit faced (Also get that jazz cabbage all day every day)
Just do what you want a throw in a FWB or GF in there for emotional ****, but don't tell them you have money

Do you have a wife/kids? If so I could see the reason to retire early. And I really don't have advice for you to be honest in that case, you'd be kinda on your own while most your age would be working or busy.
If you're single and don't have kids I'd say you should stay busy with some form of work you really enjoy whether it be some form of self employment through a hobby or just a field you're happy in.

Honestly good for you. What is it about working that gives you pleasure? Accomplishment from task-oriented work? Leading people? Whatever it is, figure out how you can do that and spend time doing so. For me though it would definitely be organizing politically-minded folks to make a difference.

Take a bunch of your money and fly to Europe and stay around in hostiles and hotels while going out and meeting people in different countries until you find the woman of your dreams and decide if you want to live with her and adapt a new language and culture. I'm a certified wagecuck working for Mr. Shekelstein atm so I can't retire. Met a girl from Spain while she was on vacation here in the US. She went back to Spain and part of me is wishing to quit my job and move there for a while. Best of luck finding your purpose or a woman that gives you purpose in life

Keep 5 years worth of cash on hand. Pick out how much you can spend for 5 years, and take that out.
Now take 59.5 and subtract your age (IE 30 years old)
That leave 29.5 years
Take 29.5 x 1 years worth of cash......Put that in some sort of SAFE investment (CD's, Money Market accounts, an IRA)
The leftover cash, spread it out. Some in stocks (reinvest the dividends), some in CD's, etc.
That way in 5 years, when your "cash" has run out, you can sell 5 years worth of stocks, CD's, money market gains, etc, and start living off the dividends and profits of your investments.
When you're 59.5 years old, you can begin drawing (without pentalty) from your IRA.
Now take 59.5 and subtract your age (IE 30 years old)

as far as what to do, i always told myself if i made enough money that i no longer would have to work was that i would start a business that i was passionate about and could make a decent return on my investment. for me, that was a framing business with my brother.

Become a musician, write, or something like that if you like art. The best part is you can spend a massive amount of times creating things that you enjoy and not necessarily due to marketability since you aren't doing it for money.

Dont know the answer fellow eng brah. The way things are going I'll be able to retire in 10-15 years independently. On top of that my GF has a lot of assets, including real estate. We have just started talking about whether or not either of us wants to retire early.
I've traveled a lot so not sure if I want to travel a whole bunch more. We discussed investing in a charity type business, perhaps an animal rescue. Neither of us wants to have kids, but we have discussed possibly fostering or adopting down the line. I've done pro bono work with some local architects on stuff like churches, youth centers, etc. On top of that I would still want to take on projects in the private sector just because I enjoy my job quite a bit.
I know it's not a whole lot of input, just sharing thoughts. Funny you posted this now because I was discussing this in depth with her over the weekend.

Go and take your money, and use it to invest and help new entrepreneurs. If you see an idea that has promise, help them take it to fruition. The economy will reward you with even greater sums of money, and you'll have a great impact on your community. There may be a small local immigrant family trying to open a restaurant or someone you went to school with may be looking to start his own business. Look for opportunities to help invest and grow businesses. Get the word out that you are an investor looking to help startups. People will come at you with all sorts of ideas, and you can make it your job to find the good ones and help them get what they need to become successful. This is a job, and a great one. This is the most lucrative and economically rewarding career path, and few have the luxury to enter it. Take the opportunity!

for real, though, you're in a position almost anyone would kill for, srs. i would invest in another business or something to keep yourself busy, but in an area you're really passionate about or at least interested in learning. you have the money to support you and your family, so you could take any hit a small risk might bring, or if it doesn't bring in much profit, you wouldn't be relying on it anyways.
or just use the money and free time to learn some talent/skill you've always wanted. maybe even learn something together with your wife or your kids.
