But as it stands, we don't know whether or not the dog could have survived. Pure speculation because of what that neighbor chose to do to the other mans dog.

If it were me, I would take it upon myself to get the dog in the back of my car and to an emergency vet ASAP. Much like the other neighbor was offering to do. Unless you're a veterinarian you just don't know what the outcome could be, and that's why you don't take action like that.

do you have a source for this? not saying you're lying, but i haven't seen anything like that.

Again, the primary issue isn't the method of killing, its whether the dog needed to be put out of it's misery, or whether it could have been saved, and whether the dude should have made that choice

Like I said. I would be perfectly fine if this had been a licensed vet. But i don't trust an ex-Coast Guard/athlete to be able to determine when my dog is past saving. And the fact other neighbors wanted to take him to the vet implies that not everything thought he was beyond saving.

The point is no one knows whether this HAD to be done, and thanks to the neighbor, the owner will never know.

lol. ok so you just choose to be willfully ignorant and ignore that you're inserting information and arguments that don't belong?

you didn't appeal to emotion. You said tried to make people believe the dog could be aggressive, therefore justifying the humanity of how the dog was killed. So not only are you sowing dissonance based off nothing, but you clearly don't understand why it's inhumane to swing a sledgehammer like a golf club to try and kill something.

Huh, I was under the impression that the dog wasn't savable. I doubt dogs commonly survive one car hitting them. A second seems like it seals the deal.

If the dog were savable, that changes things.

EDIT:http://ktla.com/2017/04/19/neighbor-...-sledgehammer/

The dog was in good enough condition to make its way to the porch. I think it could have had a chance to be saved.

We don't know what would've happened to the dog. Doesn't matter, the neighbour doesn't have the right to go to the property and do that. If the dog posed a threat after being hit by the cars, it would be more understandable, but not in the current situation.

No one is doubting whether or not he had the legal right to do it brah. He clearly didn't. Some just agree with the moral aspect of it, which after looking into it some more, was also highly questionable.

Yeah. we don't know how badly the dog was hit, for all we know he broke one leg/hip and was killed for it. I've seen and known dogs to get hit by one and/or multiple cars and still survive, hence why this story makes me so angry.

If it came out the dog was like split in half but somehow still conscious, then by all means put him out of his misery. but don't swing the sledgehammer like a golf club while you do it.

We really don't know all the facts here. The neighbors could be some eternal optimists who think 'there may be a chance' even if the dog was barely clinging to life.

And of course there are those who lack the courage to do what is necessary (kill the dog) and would prefer to pass the buck to someone else so they don't have a dog's death weighing on their conscience.

(example is if the dog is well past saving)

Have you met the average reporter? Not exactly the brightest bulbs. Doesn't change the fact that it's wrong for the neighbour to take control of the situation, while the dog is on its own owner's property, after not hurting anyone. If the neighbour's kid got bit at the park 5 minutes earlier, even then I'd understand his reasoning for doing that. But how can you confidently say he was in a position to put the dog out of its misery? Is he an expert? Does he know anything beyond the average dog owner? We don't know anything about him, other than he is not a licensed animal professional and he decided to go onto his neighbour's property and kill his dog.

It's from the OP and the linked article
“There was blood around her head and her side was mostly skin and flesh,” said Garcia.
Crawling dog, panting hard, bleeding, and topped off with serious road rash.

Have you ever worked on a farm or hunted? Sometimes we have to put an animal down with whatever is on hand to put it out of it's misery. It doesnt read like it could have been saved and the guy made a judgement call.

You know when an animal is injured you have to muzzle or otherwise incapacitate it? Good luck with a pit bull in that condition trying to moved an injured Animal to a vet. Who is going to pay for the vet bill? Or clean up the blood from the back seat of the car? Who's to say the moment the dog got to a vet the vet wouldn't immediately put the animal down?

We really don't know all the facts here. The neighbors could be previous vet techs who know "there may be a chance" even if it seemed the dog was barely clinging to life.

And of course there are those who lack the empathy to do what is necessary (help the dog) and would prefer to just put the dog out of it's misery so they can tell all their beer buddies about it later.

The other guy isn't in a position to make that judgment call, hence the whole point of the thread. Unless he was in immediate danger, he has no right to go to his neighbour's property and kill the dog. Also, you killing animals on your own farm after making an accurate assessment of your own animal makes sense to me. See the difference here?

Edit; working at a farm and having approval of the farm owner then putting the animal down is fine. Decision made by an individual who can make the appropriate judgment. Not some redneck thinking he's a vet.

Vet bill, blood from the backseat, whether the dog would be put down or not immediately after visiting the vet are all irrelevant. He isn't in the position to make that call.

lol "blood around her head and her side was mostly skin and flesh". ever stop to think maybe the blood around her head was from the sledgehammer strikes? considering the owner,Garciadidnt get there until after all this happened? not to mention how short pit bull dog hair is, road rash would be immensely easy to achieve even sliding like 5 feet

have you ever ****ing used a sledgehammer? there's one right way to use them. swinging down with all your force. not twice to the back of the neck like a golf club. He could have done it more humanely than he did. And he also made a judgement call that wasn't his to make.

Have you ever handled a pit bull? theyre big animals, but by no means the strongest or most dangerous dog. stop being a bitch. If my 100lb stick of an ex can handle injured rottweilers and GSD's at Banfield, that isn't an excuse.

The owner will pay for the vet bill. The owner will pay for the back seat of the car. If the vet decides to put the animal, that's alicensed veterinarian'sdecision, not joe ****ing schmoe down the street. If you're so fukn heartless you won't help a creature survive because you're worried about some blood in your back seat, then fuk you. This is someone's pet and family, not a stray

It doesn't sound like he was a vet, that's not even a valid part of the argument you guys are making. The headline clearly identifies him as a neighbor, no were does it say he was a vet or had been a vet tech. He was a person who made a judgement call on an animal in distress.

Stop trying to distract on the manner (which does sound gruesome), or whether he had the right to cross the street, or whether he had medical training. All this story is about is some guy killing an animal and everyones reaction to the event. Take a highway drive in a heavily populated area with deer. People are braining those things with tree stumps, rocks, and tire irons after they are laying in the road for hours after getting hit by a car or truck. No news articles about that at all to argue over.

You're bringing up sharks and calling people names in a thread online about someone else's dog. Pretty sure I'm not the dumb one here.

So what if it did get put down the second it got to the vet? I'd have a clean conscious if that happened. I also have no problem and I assume the owner wouldn't have a problem paying a vet bill to potentially save their pets life. I also have no problem cleaning blood or paying to get my vehicle cleaned to potentially save an animals life either.

Goes back to the same point. You are in no position to make that call. Only thing you can do is everything you can to help save the dog until the owner or a professional chooses otherwise.

=======

Of course he wasn't a vet. We're saying he's not in the position to make the decision, only a professional, such as a Vet, should be able to.

Why did he make the decision to end an animal in distress on someone else's property (the owner of the dog's property, nonetheless)? Do you not see the error in that judgment?

You definitely didn't get your reps because of your logical reasoning skills.

lol. if all it is about is some guy killing an animal then why did he get arrested? why don't i get arrested when i hit a rabbit or coyote?

a dog is property. that's all i have to say. let that sink in, absorb it, understand it, then come back and try to argue. the fact he ISN'T a vet is the whole fkn reason why he shouldn't get to decide if the dog lives or not. he wasn't protecting or helping anyone.

i'll say it once more. I brought up sharks because the other dude brought up a ridiculous argument to justify whether this guy was in the right. at least you recognize that my response was ridiculous too, as it was intended to be.

have you ever ****ing used a sledgehammer? there's one right way to use them. swinging down with all your force. not twice to the back of the neck like a golf club.

This is someone's pet and family, not a stray

i really have no idea how you have such a high rep
Lol
Dude clearly wanted to use the least force possible, porbably thought the momentum would be enough to break its neck. Obvious he didn't think out his execution plan.

Lol just imagine some guy walking over to a dying dog with a sledgehammer than bringing it down with all his might.... Would make the dogs head explode.

while I agree it would leave quite the mental image for any onlookers, it would undoubtedly be more humane. For all we know, the dog was still conscious after the first hit and started struggling to get away from the person who's hitting him while he's down.

Edit; working at a farm and having approval of the farm owner then putting the animal down is fine. Decision made by an individual who can make the appropriate judgment. Not some redneck thinking he's a vet.

Killing an animal suffering is something that people with empathy do. So if your dog crosses the road to my farm after getting hit by a truck I'll try to reach you and put it down. I'd have no problem cross the road after trying to call you to put the same dog down.

This entire thread is silly. Crux of this all is city vs. rural circumstances, they differ greatly. In the city his actions open him to legal liabilities, not so much out where there aren't street lamps.

Vet bill and costs aren't irrelevant.

You only bring up my reps because you expect a neg back for your emotional outpouring and cursing at me in this thread. You're maturity is suspect. Can't believe the red ITT is making a better argument for discussion than you seem to be capable of. Just stop quoting me lol.

lol wut?

i'm not the only one to bring up your reps. I didn't neg you either. Though I would have by now if I was off r/c. Your intellect is suspect...you're the one who can't even comprehend not only mine, but multiple people's posts

gjdm to admitting to living in the past though lmao. "where there aren't streetlights". you stay in your redneck corner of the world, I'll stay in my civilized section. Every argument you've made, I would expect from someone sub-100 IQ

also good job not responding to a single one of my valid arguments, and just replying "hurr durr nice immaturity"

real mature. keep being a proponent for the destruction of someone else's property on their own property, without consent or notice. That must be what country living is all about huh?
