I love how people want to be yacht rich everytime they hit the reverse lottery in life and can blame it .00001% on a company. You let your son buy a rat for a pet and something fked up happened. Its no ones fault but it would be yours as parents before the pet co in my opinion.

Sad to be honest. When I was a teenager I had a pet rat named kb spliff and I would wear a shirt with a pocket so he could ride around with me. Took him everywhere all summer long and would smoke with him and stuff. Was an awesome pet.

Dont see how they lose, its petco fault. At least it should spread awareness so other rat buyers dont make same mistake..
Edit: well they do warn them.
“They (Petco) warn about it because they know they can’t get rid of it,” attorney Kimberly Oberrecht told the jury. “It’s still very rare.”
The jury on Thursday found that Petco did enough to warn the boy’s family of the possible risks and dangers of owning a pet rat, and therefore was not negligent in the boy’s death.

They signed a waiver stating the potential for rat diseases. I feel sorry for them as i would assume the rat would be ok but you roll the dice and like it or not, you have to accept the outcome.
of course I say that knowing i would burn every petco to the ground if it happened to my kid with all the workers inside.

So we have rats we bought from Petsmart. Not sure how Petco works, but Petsmart has a disease free garauntee and they will cover vet bills etc and claim to take responsibility. That being said, I would assume, based on the paperwork, they almost have to be responsible if a rat had a deadly disease.

In elementary school we had pet rats in our classroom. They were super nice, active, friendly, and social. They're just as good of a pet as any other rodent. Guinea, hamster, chinchilla, etc

Little fukers wiped out a 3rd of Europe and people still havent learned their lesson, even when its spelled out for them on paper when they are buying it. So the rat can breed and make baby rats? You arent a rat breeder, you obviously did not do research to breeed rats.
