can't really give any advice on such a situation , but i hope you don't continue to work just because "thats what you're supposed to do" or because working is somehow what give life a "meaning", i would do whatever i want and if whatever i do doesn't make me money then it doesn't mean it's meaningless or that you have no purpose

Curious when you have big money like that why you have a mortgage at all?

I've had enough funds to pay off my mortgage for awhile, but my managed account makes much more than I'm paying in mortgage interest each year. Also, mortgage interest comes straight off your taxable income. It would be nice to pay it off for peace of mind, but it doesn't make sense, money wise.

well that depends on your interests doesn't it.. I would buy land and manage be it farming / forestry / hunting whatever. Build guest houses so friends can come stay. I'd probably hire a person to work for me, what probably be like $40k a year and I'd own their life for the duration of mine. I'd have them clean my house, cook meals, **** my wife, do odd jobs etc.

Mr. Money Mustache is legit - he's a big believer in financial freedom and breaking out of the 9/5.

Realistically once you can live on 4% of your net worth you've made it - you can safely draw that amount to live on per year, indefinitely. If you need less than that, your money will CONTINUE to grow.

You're in a very enviable position, but that doesn't mean that figuring out what to do next isn't hard goddamn work. Most people put off asking the hard questions about what kind of life they want, telling themselves they will live how they want once they're retired & have the time to start living. Then they retire and realize that they have no idea what they want to do/be/experience. If I were you I would rent a cabin in the middle of nowhere for a week, disconnect entirely, and bring some notebooks and some good books about creating a meaningful plan for your life. You're at one of the biggest transition points in life, take the time to do it right.

I have thought about this in the past.

I would concentrate on one physical and one mental hobby.

Train to a high level one physical hobby: Hiking, Mountaineering, Martial Arts, Boxing, Tennis, Bodybuilding
Train to a high level one mental hobby: Languages, Chess, Poker, Trading, Instruments

I can see this happening to a lot of people. I've tried not to wrap who I am as a person into what I do professionally. I already live a great life while working full time. I travel a lot, spend a lot of time with my family, play tennis, ski, etc. I just worry that those things will lose their luster if I can do them 24/7. I do have 3 years to figure out my next move. I'll start doing more research into small business ideas. I have a lot of friends from all different industries. Maybe some of them are tired of wagecucking and we can go in on something together.I have plenty of physical hobbies. I do think I'll try to level up my tennis game. That's something I enjoy a lot and think I could really improve on by spending more time on the court.

I do worry about not exercising my brain. I do feel like I've gotten dumber over the last several years, even while working. Just because I've become good at my job, find it pretty easy, and haven't really had a need to push myself professionally. I also have a history of Alzheimer in the family. I know they say you can extend your brain health a little longer by using it.

Where do you want it? I hear there are little deserted islands off the coast of Panama that foreigners can buy and they're reasonably cheap. Don't think that would be very accessible for the Euro and Aussie miscers, but fuk em, right?

Chit brah I would travel the world but I see you have kids/wife so that sort of limits you to stay in one place. I personally would never work again because I hate working but again having kids and a wife limit you on what you can do with your free time and it would probably get boring not working. You should def be taking full advantage of the outdoor activities you could be doing in CO

look into smaller towns that are experiencing a population boom, buy land in an area where you think it could be bought out by developers later on.

I felt like that after graduating college and then I went back to school for paramedicine. Now my brain feels like a million things are going on up there at once. You just need something to get all the neurons firing up there.

Also, since you have the money, spend a few weeks somewhere with a professional tennis coach to catapult your game and then you'll enjoy it more.

Ever thought about starting up a scholarship fund where you get to pick who gets a little bit of money for school or something like that? Philanthropy is an amazing thing.

That works for me. We'll have two frat style houses. One for the STEMs and the other for the tradies. And a big wall separating the two. We'll make the tradies pay for the wall (and build it, too)
