Right now I think patriotism is very high again after the election. Sadly the partisans aren't on board but they are a small minority. Most people aren't burning American flags and most people don't want to burn American flags. That's a few loudmouths.

One thing about America. We may seem divided, but attack us and we will all get together and woop ur ass. It's like siblings that constantly fight amongst themselves .... but when an outsider tries to start something ... all the siblings get together and lay the smack down.

What would you do
If you were asked to give up your dreams for freedom
What would you do
If asked to make the ultimate sacrifice
Would you think about all them people
Who gave up everything they had
Would you think about all them War Vets
And would you start to feel bad
Freedom isn't free
It costs folks like you and me
And if we don't all chip in
We'll never pay that bill
Freedom isn't free
No, there's a hefty ****in' fee
And if you don't throw in your buck 'o five
Who will?
What would you do?
If someone told you to fight for freedom
Would you answer the call
Or run away like a little pussy
'Cause the only reason that you're here
Is 'cause folks died for you in the past
So maybe now it's your turn
To die kicking some ass
Freedom isn't free
It costs folks like you and me

Because it's the greatest country in the world. It's pretty easy to be patriotic when you realize all the opportunities you have, how fortunate you are, and knowing there's nowhere else you can go that can top it.
America's the greatest by a pretty wide margin too. And the icing of it all is if you've actually lived elsewhere you realize just how true this is.

Because patriotism is the perfect tool to instill a false sense of bravado in the citizens which allows the government paper over all the cracks in the system rather than solving them and facing them head on.
When society becomes less patriotic then they begin to become more hostile and cynical of the leadership [see riots in Egypt, Venezuela, Tunisia, etc.]

As for the main topic, it is cool that people from any background, if they show pride in being an American they are welcomed. Every American loves a good (legal) immigration story no matter from what country.

my dad told me a story somewhat recently. on 9/11, we all got sent home from school (i was living in the US at the time). gw bush gave his address to the nation, and one of his lines was 'America was targeted for attack because we're the brightest beacon for freedom and opportunity in the world'. lil 11yo me laughed at that line - what the fuk are you talking about? no, that's not why the US was targeted. but these types just eat that chit up. never question.
