It's not even about showing it off. That's fuking awesome for sure, but it's more about reminding yourself "that's right motherfuker, I made it". From humble beginnings to a boss who can drop 10k on a watch without giving a fuk.

I agree that it doesn't really make sense to drop a couple grand on a nice watch unless you can truly afford it, but some people really like watches so I don't judge them for it. My buddy bought a breitling recently, and he said no one at work even noticed it.

Once you acquire true wealth (this is different than money), you should be looking to get a legacy watch. A legacy watch is one that you will pass on to your son, then it will go to your grandson and so on. When you are 40 and you walk into a boardroom, do you want to be like every other Tom, Dick and Harry by sporting a lame Rolex Submariner? If you are partial to the Rolex Submariner, you better get it in 18K gold, that way when a colleague shows you their generic Submariner, you can say to them: "That's not a Submariner, THIS IS A SUBMARINER! (as you reveal your 18K Gold Submariner)." An 18K Gold Rolex Submariner will cost you about $30K.
Personally, if you want to tell the world you are an alpha peer male, you should consider the following watches (in no particular order):
1) Patek Philippe 18K White Gold Calatrava;
2) Patek Philippe Nautilus (18K White or Gold);
3) Breguet Classique Reverse;
4) Audemars Piguet 18K Royal Oak; and,
5) Jaeger Le-Coultre Watch Duometre
These watches are not the most expensive on the market but they will cost more than your average Rolex. However, more times than not, you can tell plenty about a man based on his watch. For example, if I see a person at a poker table wearing a Tag Heuer, I know he is someone who is risk averse and doesn't bluff often. This is someone who is easily influenced by others and didn't have an affluent upbringing. It also reveals that the wearer has a high opinion of himself in public but really is an insecure bloke. I love playing poker or chess against Tag Heuer and Breitling watch wearers as I already know their hubris will inevitably betray them.

At a minimum, with this watch you can carry on as a watch purist poseur. If you want to follow the herd, just get the standard Rolex Daytona which will show successful individuals that you are just an average follower of watch trends. Also, don't be shocked if every other person who sees your Rolex asks you "is that real?" since the Chinese have nearly perfected the counterfeit market on Rolexes.

It's kind of a hobby and a watch is the only jewelry I wear. No other wristbands, necklaces, earrings, or anything. I have quite a few wristbans, but you don't always have time to change them to, for example, match your belt and shoes. Better to have a few basics ready. It's nice to have a watch for different occasions &/or styles. You can do a lot with some all-rounders, but why not have some selection?

for any of you young bucks looking for something in the 2-5k range, you should be able to find a datejust/no-date sub/explorer i (avoid polished center links)... these are great dependable tool watches that you can beat on a bunch and will likely appreciate in value over time. if these don't suit your tastes, then search around... IWC makes great pilot watches, and there are some other underrated dress watch brands such as frederique constant, whose new classic moonphase is a well finished patek homage that looks stellar. dive watches are a huge segment and mkII or steinhart might fit the bill for a great looking sub homage at a lower price point.

Barring any significant economic downturn / recession, a luxury watch can be an investment...assuming you do your research and price hunt a bit. There is so much dealer margin built in on new luxury watches it is pissening. Almost as bad as engagement rings.

A real watch such as patek phillipe, audemars piguet, breguet, ulysse nardin etc... is a symbol of status. Its also a beautiful show of craftsmanship and engineering.
Some watches are an investment, you can either resell them at a higher price or keep them in the family for generations.
Plus its nice to have a little bling sometimes.

Speedy on the wrist as I type this, and I have a small but varied collection of watches because I find them interesting. I love owning and wearing a nice watch, don't really care what anyone else thinks of it or whether there are alternative ways to tell the time. Fuk pulling my phone out to check the time. Might as well say there's no point owning a nice car because you can get where you want to on a bus.
Will get myself a JLC one day and I will probably own a Rolex at some point. And if I ever properly make it I'm buying a Lange.
