Completely depends on the strength of the magnet, how freely the magnetic substance can move and the distance between the magnet and the substance following the field lines.

What is constant though is the curvature. The field lines are always locally straight but globally curved.

what you are witnessing is simply a matter of perceptive error due to physical constraints.
If this were true then you could use your proposed phenomenon to view any point on earth from any other point on earth by selecting the correct lens.

Climbing on top of a mountain would also not extend your horizon.

that is in fact the exact opposite. a flat earth will result in no bending of photons. unless your lens is bigger than the earth, you would never be able to collect the photons because they are not bent. Also, climbing on a mountain and seeing further away is exactly the reason why the earth is not a sphere, otherwise you would be able to see down into the curve, as opposed to a straight line across.

If the earth was indeed spherical, you could literally climb on the highest point and collect photons with a lens to see any point in front of you, due to gravity bending photons.

what is next, you will say gravity cannot bend photons, when your "scientists" "proved" otherwise?

Everything overcomes it. When you drive a car you are doing the same thing. Why exactly would a magnet float anyway?

Hold a magnet in your hand and feel gravity pull it down. That is the minimum force required to move it. Put a magnet that can pull that hard or harder next to it and it will "defy gravity".....but not really.

BTW, you can also do this experiment at home. It is called the magnet inside a copper pipe experiment.

It proves a whole bunch of stuff you do not believe:

I never said I didn't believe in magnets...what I said that the earth is not magnetic based on the principles understood. placing a magnet on the ground should result in levitation. how can earth be a magnet if both S and N poles of a magnet are attracted to the ground? that is logically impossible.

You think they work completely differently than thy actually do. For example your magnetic water comments. You might see this differently but to people that understand physics there is no gap between what you are proposing and stating that magnetism doesn't exist.

For example you could not say that your stomach is a magical elf that turns food into poop and that this means that you believe in the stomach.

I will answer your question (again) and will request that you answer the question in post #91.

A compass points to local north and south. In both the 2D and 3D demonstrations you can clearly see that magnetic field lines are not linear, they curve. This allows for a local north/south to be different than global north/south.

Local north points out into space even though that is not where the north pole is.

Here is the test for them.

Have a laser @ 100 meters point parallel to the ground.

Have a plane on auto pilot follow the laser.

Outcome #1 the plane reaches the ends of the earth and the experiment proves that 100% of all science is wrong.
Outcome #2 a flat earther flies off into space as the earth curves away from them.

Anyone that buys into flat earth theory should volunteer for this so they can go down and history..........

If a flight leaves Seattle bound for *****, it goes up into the Artic Circle over Greenland, and then through Russia into the Middle East...

...because the Earth is round.

If the Earth was flat, the flight would go in a straight line from Seattle across the US through Africa into the Middle East...

Actually, on a ball earth spinning at 1000 mph, all the water should make its way to the equator. There should be no land mass at the equator. Op's logic is flawed, but earth is still demonstratably flat.

Also, you all do realize that imagination often leads to reality. imagination of thought, movies, etc. People imagined to fly, and so we did. Movies imagined planes hitting twin towers, and so it did.

When we fly in one direction, we simply show up at the other end. there is no "falling off" due to a phenomenon your minds cannot comprehend.

Here is a perfect example:




another highly plausible scenario is that when approaching the edge of the earth, the gravity will distort out experience, much like what would occur near a black hole. We would perceive we are going straight, but in fact we are going in a circle around to the other side of the world.

and please, please stop confusing round with spherical.

How can a ball both be attracted to the earth, and then be repelled by it? throw two magnets with opposite poles together - they will stick. People are trying to say the force of a tennis ball is greater than the force of the earth?

Does this water look like it's being sucked down to you? No it just sits there because it's at a flat point. When it can flow downwards then it flows down. When it can't it sits there. If the Earth was round there would always be a downwards to the bottom of the globe.

Okay so I actually took the time out of my day to try and explain the shape of the earth in its most simplest form to some of you guys. Notice I am not disrespecting anyone because I am coming from a straight professional perspective here.

I drew two diagrams illustrating what the earth is and what it looks like from the outside.

Here is the explanation:

-First and foremost, there is a difference between the earth and the world. The earth is basically everything we live on i.e. land, water, and trees/grass. The world is the whole globe and everything that makes up the world including the sky and clouds.
-Now the earth itself is flat. What you have is the bottom of the earth as depicted in the photo below.



-The brown part at the bottom is what we stand on. It is round and circular; however, it is flat. Imagine it like a 25 cent coin. That is the shape of the bottom of the earth. Everything on earth lays on that. The water, the trees, and other living things such as animals, including humans. These things are also flat but in a circular shape.

So this whole flat circular shape needs things like wind, rain, etc, to hold us together. This is where the actual oblate spheroid like shape comes in. This is what gives people the idea of the world being round. This round like shape as shown in the image below titled "Top of Earth" is the atmosphere surrounding earth. Things like air, clouds, and the skies make up this part of the earth which gives it a nice round looking shape from the outside. In fact, the majority of snapshots of the earth are taking from above earth rather than below it. If an astronaut were to take pictures of earth from below it, you will also see clouds as well as the sky.



Hope this sums up a lot of questions in this thread.
