Because the cultural /social expression of gender changes over time and between societies.

Sex does not.

Men in North America typically do not wear makeup, jewelery, or dresses.

But that does not mean men in other cultures do not.

They are all the same sex, but their expression of being male differs depending on the society.

well thats silly, should we have to assign a discrete word for the social or cultural expression of being in or possessing any-otherwise-well-defined-state? why not go further and just add -like to the end of the root word, for instance male-like, or female-like. or would that be too transparent.

This. When you say someone is a "male" or "female", and use it as a noun, people shouldn't have to guess if you mean biologically or that they like to wear makeup.

My entire life I've seen surveys, registration forms, etc., using GENDER with the option of MALE or FEMALE, it has been used synonymously with sex, up until contemporary times gender has always been synonymous with sex even in every day use even in pop culture / television, you must be from another planet or you've been asleep for along time and just woke up

Agree 100% with the spa. We (trans women) know what we're getting into prior to transitioning, and to to think others won't find a non-operative trans woman's franks and beans off putting is being extremely naive and short sighted.

It's different, and certainly not 'normal' in regards to social mores. Have surgery and no one will think twice.
