Prodigy choked on an egg Tuesday morning in the hospital, where he'd been getting treatment for a bout with sickle cell anemia ... TMZ has learned.
Multiple sources -- connected to Prodigy and the investigation into his death -- tell us he choked on the egg ... however, it's still unclear if that ultimately caused his death. We're told officials are trying to find out if it was the choking or the sickle cell symptoms he'd been battling for days.

I just thought the subset of 90s rap like Mobb Deep was too street for some I dunno. I see my friends from different backgrounds liking my RIP Prodigy post. Makes me feel good.

He was never really popular to the level to a Nas or Jay-Z but real hip hop heads knew him.

Music is so transient and the emotions of the music resonates with all of us. Even though he was rapping about negative ****, the way he portrayed his world in his prime and his raw lyrics were some of the best of the 90s. Legend.

Sickle cell is fuking terrible. I work part time at a pediatric hospital with a sickle cell center. Those kids tough as hell.

To put it in perspective, our go to treatment for ss crisis is ******** sprayed up the nose
