John McEnroe Won't Apologize For His Serena Williams Comments. Good, He Shouldn't.

On Sunday, tennis legend John McEnroe ruffled the feathers of feminists everywhere when he explained that tennis star Serena Williams, while being the "best female player ever," would rank around 700 in the men's circuit.

Here's the exchange with NPR reporter Lulu Garcia-Navarro:
Garcia-Navarro: We're talking about male players but there is of course wonderful female players. Let's talk about Serena Williams. You say she is the best female player in the world in the book. McEnroe: Best female player ever — no question. Garcia-Navarro: Some wouldn't qualify it, some would say she's the best player in the world. Why qualify it? McEnroe: Oh! Uh, she's not, you mean, the best player in the world, period? Garcia-Navarro: Yeah, the best tennis player in the world. You know, why say female player? McEnroe: Well because if she was in, if she played the men's circuit she'd be like 700 in the world.
The Left, all too quick to be outraged, branded the colorful tennis player a sexist for daring to voice such a simple truth rooted in (apparently misogynistic) biology. The media, needless to say, began sharpening their knives for McEnroe the moment the NPR interview was published.
On Tuesday morning, CBS This Morning jumped at the chance to press the tennis star for his recently-committed sins against Feminism, but when confronted, McEnroe refused to apologize.
"I'm just waiting, would you like to apologize?" asked co-host Norah O'Donnell.
"Uh, no," answered McEnore, before lamenting the asinine tendency for those in the tennis world to compare men and women.

He's right (well, maybe 700 is harsh, but definitely 200+), and you shouldn't have to apologise for facts.

That said I feel the same way whenever someone says midget boxer Floyd Mayweather is the GOAT boxer. If he's allowed to be the goat while fighting in a novelty division and with no chance against the better divisions, then it would be consistent to say Serena is the goat tennis player.

Didn't serena lose to an unranked mens player during her prime? Well no chit men will dominate women in sports. Why is this such a controversy? Also I think it is bs that women get paid the same as men in tennis, even though they only play 3 sets instead of 5 and bring in less than 1/4 of the viewership.

You could say that they are goat relative to their peers - and that they are the goats at being better than their similarily gendered, sized etc peers.

In absolute they are not the best, relative they may be.

That said the guy should not have to apoligise.

Hahahaha my dad KNOWS McEnroe. He's always been a loose cannon (and a terrible loser), not surprised he won't toe the line on gender politics. I don't see a thing wrong with telling it like it is. I mean, if sometime they want to have an exhibition match between Serena and a male player, similar to the Battle of the Sexes way back when, I'm sure it would bring a huge viewership and some $$$$$$! Women are not equal to men in many psychological aspects. It's not sexism. It's simply medical fact. Women are not meant to be equal to men. They are as the saying goes, the fairer sex. As it should be.

The broader argument and picture here is that men have been emasculated in Western civilization for a long time now. In many ways a man being a man is a bad thing. Boys being boys.. What's that!? Can't have that.

It's a disgrace what's been done to our countries and civilization as a whole on many levels in the last 40 years or so.

Didn't the US womens soccer team (apparently the best in the world) lose to some HS boys team. If I recall correctly they had to call the game early because the scoring was getting out of control (double digits).

Someone posted that the best world class women athletes are only about on par with decent varsity HS boys and I think he is right just looking at track and field numbers. Since other sports you can't make a direct comparison with numbers as easily.

To be honest, male college tennis players are better than the elite women tennis players of today.

It's just apples and oranges. It's not a slight on women, it's just the differences between sexes.

People that don't play sports aren't aware of the stark contrast between men and women physically. Do you know that HS male teams routinely beat Olympic female teams.

Serena herself knows he's right. First off, she played some dude ranked 200... who showed up to the match after drinking booze and smoking cigs to try to "make it more interesting" and still lost. Also, I'm SURE her practice partners are men, never women.

The question was badly phrased and intentionally made to provoke an inflamatory answer


BUT I think the question that they were trying to get at was: comparing the top ranked men with the rest of the men, and the top ranked female with the best of the female, and their achievements in their respective classes, has the top ranked female achieved more in the tennis world than the top ranked male has? Like you could say that a lightweight boxer is the best in the world based on their achievements within their weight class, compared with a heavyweight's achievement in their class, without the two having to fight each other which wouldn't be a fair match and wouldn't prove anything

They actually played doubles against some guys ranked between 1100 and 1400 and got wrecked abruptly. So it's 100% fact they'd lose to the top 700 probably.

Someone posted that the best world class women athletes are only about on par with decent varsity HS boys and I think he is right just looking at track and field numbers. Since other sports you can't make a direct comparison with numbers as easily.

And if you delve a little deeper, I'm sure there have been 1000's of guys to crack the top 700 over the course of Williams' career, so in reality there is probably 5-10k guys that could have beat her over her career
