I dont believe in morals. There is no universal right and wrong.

I instead believe in personal principles remaining true to them.

It's a universal wrong to kill an innocent person, to steal from someone, to cheat on someone, to lie, etc.

You might want to elaborate on what you meant.

"Universal" LOL

Good choice of adjective there.

You're saying these examples of behaviour apply everywhere, at all times, as though common morals have an objective and absolute existence, instead of simply being a human construct.

I don't fall under that category, thus it doesn't apply to me. That would be like me calling you a dog.

Besides, I dislike it when people make baseless assumptions about me or anyone else for that matter.

IMO those things I mentioned are universal wrongs and they aren't "human constructs." They are objectively wrong things to do.

Right and wrong are very clearly 'concepts' as opposed to 'things'. We conceive of them using the meat computers in our skull, which are influenced and constrained by various instincts and emotions.

That does not give them objective existence. They are a product of our world-view and emotions. If we were not human and had evolved sentience via the process of evolution with different animal stock, we would have a different emotional set, a different rational process and a different set of morals. Morals are subjective.

In fact, we don't need to posit an alien race in order to observe different moral values. We can check out different groups of humans and different values held in different times and places.

IMO a hypothetical situation that starts with, "if we were not human," doesn't apply here. Let's stick to the human race.

Sure, a certain group might have no problem with killing innocent people and for them it's okay because of their "justifications for doing so." Morals are subjective but objective at the same time. To the vast majority of the human race, the group killing innocent people will be looked down upon.

Also, I'm sure that some of the members of the group that kills innocent people know deep down that what they are doing is wrong, but they continue due to being either brainwashed or coping by drinking, doing drugs, etc. Humans aren't emotionless robots at the end of the day.

"Universal" means they apply to everything. Animals kill for many reasons besides feeding. I don't imagine they consider it wrong, nor do I feel that they are wrong to do so.

Thanks for the clarification.

In regards to the universal conundrum, I am referring to humans, not animals. Any way I can clarify that?

Probably not.

I would be hard pressed to come up with a definition of "animals" that would exclude humans.

right and wrong, good and bad are relatively simple human constructs. in the grander scheme, if you can imagine such a thing, nothing is good or bad, it all just is as it is, no judgment. but as long as we're human, and specifically humans in western civilization, i.e. not 3rd world barbarians, there is usually a pretty clear right and wrong for the majority of things. US law is more or less in line with western morality.

I'm saying given that we're western humans, is being moral, in those terms, a weakness or a strength?

I'm a moral guy with a strong sense of right vs wrong. I rarely do wrong by people, and have difficulty lying/cheating/stealing, and in the occasional instances when I do one of those things, I feel bad about it. I'm starting to think that being this way is a weakness. that if I were able to lie, for example, without others knowing that I'm lying, or without feeling bad afterwards, that it would be an advantage in life insofar as it would be easier to get what I want.

but then I wonder if, after a lifetime of lying/cheating/etc, if I were to achieve more than I would have while being totally moral and honest, if I might be kind of miserable vs truly honest achievement.

doesn't matter anyway, I'm not gonna change, just food for thought. since I'm not one of them, I like to think that anyone who cheats his way through life isn't completely satisfied or truly happy with himself. I could be wrong though.
