I used to think the same, but after awhile you start to understand how sometimes--not in this case--life for some people just can't get any better and they have no options. For many people it would only take 1-2 horrible things to happen in their life and things just automatically change. But it's nothing to take lightly, a lot of people are just mentally ill and some just cannot cope with hardship like others. Some people may have no-one in their lives, so it's not really selfish unless you do have supporting love ones but choose to go to them first.

We are all going to die eventually. If we lived in a world free of disease, and we were all biologically immortal, we'd overpopulate the planet and it would be a horrible life for all of us. Death is actually an evolved process. It is something that helps us. It prevents you from competing with your offspring for mates and resources.

There is even an evolutionary argument for the existence of depression and suicide. Perhaps by committing suicide one allows resources that would have gone to the depressed to go to their kin instead. If someone is extremely depressed, there is probably something wrong with them that is preventing them from coping with the environment in a way that enhances their chances of reproduction and survival. So it makes sense for them to die so that resources could be used on kin who may stand a better chance. Nature is brutal, and this is how life seems to work.
