The state is what determines right and wrong and because of human nature, horrible things result from it. If you want to see what happens when religion is outlawed, look at the USSR under Stalin. 60 million people died under his rule. Look at Egypt, the pharoahs were seen as living gods and incapable of doing wrong. The Nazi's were in the process of outlawing religion as Christianity wasn't compatible with state values. Look how those empires turned out.

You don't have to be religious but you can't just discredit religion and how it has benefited our society.Judeo-Christian values are what built the society that you live, thrive, and are allowed to think freely today. The judeo-christian value that salvation comes from within and not the state is revolutionary. Some religions actually encourage free thinking.

It's not so simple as that. It goes back to the age old question of "What is good and evil". Some philosophers such as Nietzsche have argued that man cannot be good until he realizes his capacity for evil. Humans by nature are selfish creatures. If you outlaw religion and belief in a higher power than humans resort to their basic instincts to determine their actions. OP, you live in a first world society that was built on judeo-christian values. It's easy to say that right now. You have all your basic needs met. But imagine yourself in a situation where you are starving, I mean truly starving. How would you act then? I don't know how I would act but I wouldn't put it beyond me to do some extreme/potentially horrible stuff. Here is an interesting quote to ponder by C.S. Lewis (the guy who wrote Chronicles of Narnia).

“No man knows how bad he is till he has tried very hard to be good. A silly idea is current that good people do not know what temptation means. This is an obvious lie. Only those who try to resist temptation know how strong it is. After all, you find out the strength of the German army by fighting against it, not by giving in. You find out the strength of a wind by trying to walk against it, not by lying down. A man who gives in to temptation after five minutes simply does not know what it would have been like an hour later. That is why bad people, in one sense, know very little about badness — they have lived a sheltered life by always giving in. We never find out the strength of the evil impulse inside us until we try to fight it: and Christ, because He was the only man who never yielded to temptation, is also the only man who knows to the full what temptation means — the only complete realist.”

You don't have to be religious but it would be absolutely foolish to disregard the belief systems that our ancestors formed to make our society as obsolete and useless. Our ancestors were smart, they have struggled, worked hard, and shed blood and tears to build the society that you live in today. Don't ever think that you are superior to your ancestors and their belief systems. That's why many religions consider Pride the greatest sin. Pride is a reckless confidence in yourself and the inability to humble yourself to learn from the life experiences of our ancestors. Many people today think that just because they can operate a smartphone that they are superior and more enlightened than their ancestors. That's bad thinking.

The video below is worth a watch. It can be found in a podcast. It's a long video but definitely worth listening to while your cleaning house or driving your car or something. Some of the misc knows about him but he is a very smart guy who gets it. I'm not the most religious guy but he has changed my view on how I view religions.

The Nazis had to swear and oath to God before they could join the party and the German Army. Every German solider had to wear a belt with the phase "God mit uns" - God with us from the Germany Empire in 1871 to the fall of the Third Reich in 1945.

Magna Carta started the society I, and virtually every person on earth, live in today. Before that the Monarchy just did what the heck they wanted to whoever they wanted be it oppressing certain religions or giving favour to others.

Good post though.

Well you could use your brain and look what what is happening in deeply religious countrys like the middle east, where women are being stoned to death for commiting adultery or homosexuals are killed just for being homosexual or atheists are killed for being 'non believers' ?

I could sit here all dat writing up a list of what would change, but tldr = it would save tens of thousands of lives every single year.

But according to you "nothing" would change, lmao please.

I posted a video on the last page showing one group of chimpanzees raiding another group.

I don't know which religions both groups of chimps practice, could somebody help me out?

I assume it must be a religious war between two factions of chimps because living creatures aren't known to fight over resources.

Maybe Christians vs. Ape-theists?

Hang on whilst I post a video of every creature on earth attacking another creature or even a member of their own species at mating times when it ends in death. Perhaps maybe post videos of Jews in Nazi (Christian) death camps, Muslims pushing homosexuals off of buildings, articles about the Armenian Genocide, undercover footage of priests grooming underage children and the Pope walking around in the gold gilded halls of the Vatican whilst christian and other religious children die from HIV, starvation, preventable disease and sexual abuse. Makes you chimpanzee footage seem tame and civilised.

This is literally a group of chimpanzees going to battle with another group, yet you contend that religion somehow starts wars.

So again I'm asking you: Which religion do the chimpanzees practice?

Nice job avoiding the question.

I'm gong to a give serious, serious response here;

If religion disappeared there'd be some celebration. Will the world be better? Possibly, but very minor. After celebration? No one would care. We'd be too busy rotting getting cucked by our own government.

Stopping a couple sand wars isn't my definition of a better world. Your standards are low, so I can see why this is good for you

The point of my videos was chimpanzees are social animals, attacking each other in groups, over territory (and by extension resources).

If you want to believe that ANY war, was started over religion, and not because of some much more serious, underlying issue, that's on you.

You're either really naive, or deluded.

Comparing humans brains to that of lesser intelligent animals. We have rational thinking, reasoning, logic and most importantly...a conscious. We have the capability to cease all conflict with one another but we choose not to. Religion has been the start of many unnecessary conflicts, has it not been? simple google searches, hell...even a history book can show you that. How many relationships, families, and lives been ruined because of religion? it would be the first step towards some human progression.

But whoever said "religion causes all wars" is dead wrong. Resources are a problem too, just saying.

If it were done voluntarily by everyone, a world without religion would have a lot of potential to disolve many world issues directly related to religion. But outlawing it? That's some straight up commie dogchit, gtfo with that nonsense.

I always cringe when people say religion has caused all war lol

Religion may mean the world to the soldier in the trenches or a general who believes 'God is with him', but the actual causes of war itself are always political and economic

Imagine entire countries of adults could be so impressionable.

Almost makes me think religion is a good thing, I'd rather have religion influencing those people instead of whatever else would fill that void.

Everything can be a cause for conflict, there's music that glorifies gang wars, movies glorifying violence, games made with children in mind whose objectives is to shoot others in the face. Wherever you look you can find someone doing something horrific because they're "influenced" to do so, it's a small minority sure, but that is also true for those with religious beliefs. People act like every religious person is a nut job psychopath killer, yet you could put 100 people of each religious group in a room and they'd all likely get along fine, but some how thinking banning religion some how solves something when man is influenced by just about every thing, with that attitude why not ban everything? If we can make the world a better place by removing all causes for conflict then that solves all of our problems right? Yeah, that truly is as retarded as it sounds.

If you've ever come into contact with people who have a strong faith, you might have recognised that these people are some of the most gracious, polite, giving people you could ever meet. I come from a completely non-religious background and am amazed by how loving these people can be, and they owe it all to religion. We ignore that though, there's no quantifiable way of deducing how much these people have contributed towards society in the long run, it's easier to look at negative impact because we record incidents of wrong doing with statistics, anything good that has come from religion is mostly unattributed to the cause but you can be sure a lot of good has come from it and continues to do so, because for the most part it is being practiced as intended. All religions have the same basic concept; God created everything, every star, every planet, every creature and every person is a creation of one thing, meaning there is nothing that exists that wasn't created by him, in essence then everything is equal and should be treated as such. Most religious people act in that way, to them it doesn't matter what color, race, even religious belief someone is, they try to treat everyone with complete compassion and tolerate any wrong doings against them, for the most part. There are those that get a distorted idea of what it means to devote yourself to God, but that's going to happen with everything, as I said in my previous post it's not religion that corrupts man, it's man that corrupts religion. The purpose of religion is ultimately unification and not segregation, it's segregation that is the source of all evil and will manifest itself in whatever form possible, be it gender, race, color, you name it, whatever reason people can come up with for treating someone else different has been done, will be done, and will always be done, religion itself is not the problem and so should never be treated as such, the sooner we all learn this and actually see the problem for what it is the better.

I'd still believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord and saviour. 100% serious.

Wouldn't mind being condemned because of it. I'd carry the cross for him like he did for me.

Yet people who otherwise would not be murdering, raping and pillaging end up doing so because they believe they are divinely commanded to do so and it is the righteous thing. Or are you conveniently siding with the extremist apologists in this one instance so you can claim that religious violence hasnothingto do with religion, and these people would be doing the exact same thing for other reason? Funny how you wouldn't take that position if a liberal was arguing that jihadism has nothing to do with Islam, isn't it?

Religion is a cancer, and the world would be much better off without it

But whoever said "religion causes all wars" is dead wrong. Resources are a problem too, just saying.
You can't say peoples lives are ruined because of religion.

It doesn't ruin anybody's lives anymore than practicing basketball ruins anybody's lives.

You're talking about people being outcasts because of or lack of religious beliefs, normal people's relationships aren't ruined if the other person believes or doesn't believe something.

The relationship is ruined because one person is close minded and can't wrap their head around other people being different, has nothing to do with religion.

That's why grandma's apple pie rocks and yours sucks.
