I come into contact with a lot of these guys.

They do make a lot of money. Granted. But they don't have lives.

80 Hour work weeks. Constantly worrying if their bets (and it is informed betting) goes wrong.

Most do it for a few years and get out, for a reason. It really takes a toll.

All that being said, working hard to acquire the skill set needed to be a quant. So it's not like I say its all bad, far from.

I know some who hire people to literally do their clothes shopping for them etc, so they look great. As for gym, if you want to find the time for it, you will, no matter what you do.

Then factor in the huge student loans you need to go to Harvard Business School or Wharton to even get hired, (let's be real tea - they hire from no more than half a dozen schools), the $3500/mo rent to get a broom closet in NYC, and the tax rape by both Uncle Sam and the state of New York in those upper income brackets, and that baller salary starts looking kind of ****ty real quick.

As it is in I-banking, you either get promoted and "downshift" to 80 hours a week, or you probably blow your head off within 5 years. I just can't fathom how anyone would do that to themselves.
We had a huge long running AMA from a legit IBer here a couple of years back. He worked out that he'd have been better off financially staying in the military.

I can tell you don't know much about banking. They don't do 80 hour weeks very often, that's just bull**** that gets perpetuated on internet forums

Depends on both the bank's performance and the analyst's performance.. but it's not unheard of to get six figure bonuses

Yeah 80 hrs are fairly rare, I always look forward to them when they come, gives you a break from the constant 100's.

I'd rather work 50-60 hours as an auditor/accountant and spend 40-50 hours with gym/family/girlfriend/friends...

Well there's the efficient market hypothesis and the market can be matched with a non-managed diversified portfolio or ETF, so yeah its informed betting.

It is. Lets say I take the position of the Euro is going to go up against the pound. I'm going to buy Euros. But to ensure that I don't get ****ed incase the losses go the other way, I'm going to hedge my position by also taking an option contract to swap my euros for pounds and then swap back say in 6 months.

It's still a bet based on where you think the market is going. That happens a ton.

And if you want to disagree, I can show you said trades going through all the time, seeing as I'm literally paid to write the code that ensures this happens.

When people talk about IB what they are generally talking about is M&A advisory or capital markets. Other areas like trading have the potential to pay well, but rarely require the insane hours in the early years.

As an M&A analyst you will literally sit at your desk churning out pitch books for 80-100 hours per week. You will re-do the same peer benchmarking, ratings, capital structure and debt capacity analysis hundreds of times. It is soul-destroying work, and there's a reason why so many highly talented and motivated people drop out.

For IB (ignore S&T ), its all about the exit opps. Not money.

Either traditional PE/HF after, b-school, or consulting.

I know one who said fuk it and went F500 corporate finance and cut his salary by 40k. 40 hour weeks were a breeze compared to his 100 hours at sweatshop (think Jefferies, Piper, MoCo), but he got hired at a senior position after 2 years of banking vs. 5+ years of working for that f500 company.
