Lots of animosity in this thread.

Those people who were demonstrating had every right to demonstrate. The reality is that they were hampered by the city for no good reason. When their demonstration was allowed to go forward by the federal judge they were seemingly met with violence by those leftist groups.

Seemingly. Of course I have no idea who actually started the violence but whoever did should be punished. From the videos that I've watched and accounts that I've read it seems that the leftists instigated the violence.

Sad that there was violence at all and of course much sadder that people died.

It's the same for the indigenous people here, there's a plan and funds to bring their education and health equity on par with the rest of the nation.

I identify as black and it doesnt make it any easier for me to get into university compared to an Anglo Australian or an immigrant from europe. You dont see me complaining or even noticing how it affects me.

maybe not in australia, but that's not the case in the united states. And how is that blaming others for my laziness? I got myself into college, got all my college paid for through athletics, and I am graduating with two degrees.

The videos are too short to have any context. It can't be assumed that the first time his car was hit was caught on video. If people had been throwing rocks/bottles/bricks, taking swings with bats over the span of a couple blocks, and shouting threats, would that your view change?

Personally, I make it a point to avoid protests. I have no interest in being around ideologues antagonizing each other. Nothing good ever comes of it.

Very interesting watching these events unfold. I happened to be listening to an episode of the "hardcore history" podcast and our struggles seem so similar to historic events, in that it's very difficult to say with certainty the extent each specific scenario that occurred.

I personally try to not get lost if the most intense parts of the story and look at the whole. Someone crashed into pedestrians in a van. It's possible they were chucking things at him. I still don't think it was reasonable for him to drive a vehicle into a group of people. But the point is that is just one acute incident.

In the grand scheme of things we have two sides which are both somewhat racist and not entirely wrong. I think the white supremacists/KKK are likely to be the bigger arsehole, but the SJW are not doing anyone any favors here with their counterprotests.

The economic problems in the midwest and south are very different than the difficulties in the inner cities, but their plight is economic nontheless. I used to be more an ignorant city boy years ago, but I've spent a lot of time travelling through "god's country" in both the midwest and south since then. A lot of these communities are economically devastated. They're just trying to get their piece of the pie. Not so much different than other communities (of color, latinos, middle eastern, jews, et al) in that they are experiencing a significant hardship not of their own making.

Just sad to see these two coalitions (I'm applying the term in a very loose way) who could actually share a lot of values and goals be pegged against each other. Life is difficult when you don't have a physical enemy with a face to assault. The challenges we face nowadays are so interwoven with large money and global affairs that it's difficult not to feel lost.
