"You could literally reply in the time it takes for you to take a chit"??? That sounds clingy af. People do get busy and sometimes forget you sent them a text, when they have time a few hours later. Some of my best friends I haven't talked to for 4 months but when we do meet up we are having a blast and it's like i just saw them yesterday.

I only have a few friends because I'm actually a hopeless friend when it comes to texting and making plans. I use to make plans to go out but it would get to that time to go out, honestly I couldn't be bothered. Some friends are super hard work, have to call them all the time and they are always wanting to go out, that not me.

Also nothing wrong with only having a few friends. You do not need a lot of friends.

that's just how life is. I lost all my friends the end of senior year of HS. They all enjoyed me saying I was the life of the party etc. They would rarely invite me out places, so I'd have to always ask. I got tired of asking and said **** it not gonna initate first. Then it was basically radio silence from them unless it was school related or something. I remember one of my best friends in HS threw 2 parties and had a list of who could go. He posted it on snap and I wasn't added so I asked if I could go and he said "yea you're fine to come" yet he had ppl added on there that he barely even talked to.

tldr; it happened to me also and I stopped initiating. Now I only hang out with chicks if not I just focus on myself or things I like to do.

It really is my man. Best friends are very rare to come by and some people never get one of those types of friends that no matter the distance or time apart, you'll still be there for each other and act like nothing has changed next time you meet. Some people may only have 1 of these friends, and it's possible for many people that person may have passed away. It sure is a grateful feeling if you can say you still have that kind of friend as many don't have or lost that luxury.

I will be your friend. Srs.

I think you're probably one of like two people on this forum I feel comfortable PMing just to chat. I don't know how I can help with the real life friends situation. Move to CA? I'll harass you nonstop and make you do everything with me!

I do this sometimes. Ill read it and respond a few hours later or a day or two later if I was really busy. The thing is 3 months is no exception, you would think if you sent a text you'd check to see if they replied sometime within a few days at most

The clinginess part yes, I'll admit in the past I have called People once a week or texted them 1x a week and then not reply back and I'd get hurt and say something when they never replied...now I just stop and delete them from my phone if I haven't heard from someone in quite awhile after I've made the effort.
Yeah that's pretty off-putting tbh. My gf hung out with a colleague a few times who is great to be around but my gf is a flake so the first time she changed plans the colleague sent her a dozen texts about how she is a bad person and a good friend doesn't change plans etc. It was literally shifting dinner plans from one night to the next and they had only hung out a couple times. Afterward several other colleagues approached my gf and shared similar stories with that person. Srs people might tell you you're great to your face but it's because you're too volatile/sensitive/vindictive to be honest with.

I have another friend who I don't hang out with because she legit smells terrible. She also has bad manners when going out to eat she'll take food off your plate without asking and just laugh it off if you say anything. We're talking 30 years old with a master's degree. She's also super nice and funny, which is partly why nobody has had a hygiene/manners intervention on her yet-- too fragile.

Just lmao @ thinking being funny or nice makes you the full package

I agree. When people say they're too busy, it just means that you're not a priority for them.

Because friendship takes time, effort, and trust to be created

most people after highschool/college usually lack time, and with the lack of time they put in less effort cuz they want that time for themselves, and without that time and effort you can't cultivate real trust.

This is why most people who are friends in adulthood are either carried over from younger years, or share the same hobbies or interest because they normally set aside time and effort for the hobby they just add a person into the mix
I've had friendships that required little to no effort. Those have been few and far between. Effort, in a large way, is what defines a friendship. Having a real friend means when you break down on the side of the road at midnight an hour away and your friend is about to smash some sloot but gets a call from you needing him to drive 2 hours round trip...he not only answers the call, he comes to get you immediately without question (clearly that's a real story).

"Oh, I texted so and so" is not the basis for a friendship. I text people all the time that I wouldn't consider "friends." In fact, I text people in an effort to not have to act like a friend or give any effort towards the "friendship." I had a friend that called me last night but I missed it. If he wasn't really a friend, I would have ignored it completely or texted him back at best. But he is a friend, so I called him back today. I even put my earbuds in, because I had every intention of having a long conversation with him. Yesterday I called another friend...CALLED. We'd been texting for too long IMO, so I actually called him so we could talk.

I have two friends that I see regularly but even then we can go a few months without seeing each other and there's no hard feelings. They're family to me and it goes unsaid that chit happens but were there if we need each other. Having a bunch of friends is overrated TBH. I'd rather have people who I can confide 100% in and the relationship is strong enough that I could go months without talking and pick right back up where we left off than a bunch of people who im not close to who I have to see constantly to reaffirm the friendship. Yet again I'm pretty introverted and I tend to get wrapped up in things. I'm not a normal case but still. Value the ones you have and if you're truly close to them don't sweat it. Quality over quantity.

Then they clearly aren't good friends and she needs to drop the 2 chitty friends and keep the 2 solid ones. I only have 3 good friends, 2 of which i consider brothers(was the best man for one of them at his wedding). All the other acquaintances i have i don't give much thought.

Ughhh completely my situation.

The only slutty acquaintance/friend I have that I've gone dancing with said " we'll just text me sometime and we can hang out" yet I texted her quite a bit and asked if we could go to the club I wanted to go to for over a year (it's an edm club) and she always would say "yeah sure!!" Then every time I'd ask the weekend before she'd always have an excuse.

She only wants to party way too hard (alcohol) and grind up on men all night ...while I just wanna go hang out with some girls and dance to techno.

I've gone out with her and her slutty friends 3 x and hated it trying to do what they wanted, but yet they can't take one night off from being sloots to dance to EDM? Sigh

You are absolutely right, you MAKE time. When my BIL is around (my best friend), everything goes out the window. It all about him. If that means staying up with him drinking until 2 am listening to his problems and giving advice knowing its a weekday and I have to get up at 4am for work...so be it (done that). But that's not to get it twisted with "needy" friends. I've had those too. Some do command an amount of your time that you simply are not willing to give to any single person. They have to respect that concept as well.

At least she follows up. I remember my best friend from HS texted me a few times when he got back from college break asking to hang out or would always say we have to hang out. I'd text time back saying yea man wanna do something next week and then he would just stay NC. then he'd text me later again asking to hang I'd respond and he'd go NC. Then I would text him asking hang and it's NC. But whenever he needs something he'll text so I just said **** it and went NC.

If you ever wanna talk you can PM me I don't really use the PM much so I wouldn't respond quick

Edit: The problem with that is that you don't like to do what they like, so they see you as the buzz kill. My old friend group used to/does smoke pot and one of the guys told me they'd invite me if I smoked, but since I don't there's no point since I'd kill the vibe. I didn't really care and that's when I started cutting contact. even if they weren't smoking I was seen as "that bro who kills the vibe" for the reason. And also bc I stole female attention from them lmao

Totally agree! I try calling people because I'd rather talk as well, but then they don't answer. I'll call 2 more times over the next few weeks and no answer. I'll give up and then go 2 months without hearing from them and then they'll call/text.

And me being the apparent "beta woman" I am, I'll answer and act like I'm not hurt.
Women are different than men usually we can't go long periods without hearing from a friend.

I'm not saying y'all don't have the real friendships that you talk about, I just can't understand how if you are friends you can go months and months without talking or doing something together.
That's just an acquaintance

Have you ever thought about joining meet up groups of interest? I actually made an amazing friend through that site.

I didn't used to say anything about it. I just don't want people using me...and the friends from school definitely were.

eh you can't really go around doing this. I understand why you did it, but it's not going to make her text you more often. I'm sure you're great, but you just have to stay positive and be around like minded people. It's definitely possible to still make friends. I wish I knew how much effort you were actually putting into making new people.

So, what are you doing? Are you putting yourself out there? It really isn't THAT much harder to make friends at an older age. It requires more effort than HS & college, but it's very possible

edit: I also think that the misc generally may not be the best place for advice in this area.

-I am a genuinely nice person and treat everyone with respect.

-I text people every once in awhile to see how they are doing if I haven't heard from them.same with family from out of state.

-Will help anyone (if a friend's car is broke down I will come pick them up, have helped people move, babysat people's kids expecting nothing in return etc)

-I am usually available to go do stuff if people give me a little advance notice (so it's not like people are inviting and I'm turning them down over and over)

-People that I meet say I'm fun to be around and I have a great personality.

SO...im wondering why acquaintances never turn into friends. I literally have 4 friends but only regularly talk to 2 of them. Their choice not mine.
I'm not going to keep texting people if after the third time no reply. Not gonna be a needy little bitch texting people constantly when they don't reciprocate.

I feel due to all this, and what I feel like is getting screwed over, I have become a little bit bitter and slowly stopped trying to make friends (I figure they can call me instead of me always being the one to initiate)

Example- two people just this week that haven't talked to me in over 3 months have the audacity to text me. One asking what we needed to read for micro, and another asking me if we can meet up and study for anatomy
(in b4 5 hrs of studying lol...yes I overestimated because I timed it the other night and it's actually only about 2 hrs if constant study)

One person I completely ignored both of their texts.

The other I replied back with the Savage "who is this?"
She goes "its Laura, ...dang"

I replied back with "well I didn't know since I haven't heard anything from you in about 3 months and the only other person that has talked to me in the group is Amanda .I I get kind of salty when people drop off the "friend planet"

She replied back "i just got busy with life. ...can we study today or tomorrow"

I said "it only takes a few seconds to send someone a text and see how they're doing" "you could literally text me in the time it takes for you to take a chit"

Didn't reply after that cause i am not even gonna attempt to be someones friend that doesn't have time to cultivate a friendship.

Keep in mind she went NC for 3 fukking months but then ALL OF A SUDDEN has time again for me ..just in time for test #1 (suprise!)

Other friends either act like they don't have time, or don't invite me places unless I text them first. It's like I'm an afterthought.

Yet, these are the same people that go on and on to their other friends saying how funny I am and how fun I am to be around and that all their friends will just love me when we DO go somewhere and Im introduced.

And for anyone who hasn't caught n yet, I totally do use the misc to feel like I have somewhat of a life other than family, and school.

Cliffs..if you've made it this far
*op is a Very loyal friend
*people say op is Fun to be around
*Only has 4 friends
*2 of which talk to on the regular/do stuff with
*op is starting to get the attitude of "fuk everyone" bc hardly any friends

Just tired of people atm. I can see how genuinely weird and socially awkward girls don't have friends but I'm really not that way. I'm weird but not in a scary or off-putting way..and no I'm not super sexual to everyone irl lol
People are selfish and usually only think of themselves and their own wants/needs. The sky is blue. Water is wet. Welcome to Earth.

It's hard to find real friends when you're an adult and it gets harder as you get older. A real friend is somebody who is there when you need them in good times and bad. You're lucky if you have even a handful of real friends. Everybody else is just an acquaintance.
