Powerlifting is more technique than raw strength.
No powerlifters bench with a completely flat back. Its about more than rom. Even a small arch is worth setting up because it creates the correct tension in the body for leg drive. It also keeps the shoulders retracted which is a healthy way to bench. Contrary to belief powerlifting style bench is better for you than bodybuilding flat style

dated 135lb genuine natty meet-winning powerlifter and her work sets are 70kg with a huge arch. Natty girls will have upper body strength only a fraction of their lower body strength. 300lb bench = not natty. Even a 200lb bench is beyond most natty girls.

Unless you know someone well enough that you know what's in their bathroom cabinets, you don't know if they're natty. Doesn't matter how many tests they pass.

More efficient /= better for you depending on your goals. If you are benching to build a bigger chest & triceps arching is pointless and not good for your lower back. If you want to hit your lower chest more just do actual decline bench. No need to artificially shorten your ROM for regular workouts.

Don't bring logic to the misc bench specialists. It is a known fact that on the misc an arched bench magically makes you lift 50lbs more, it's science. I could bench 600lbs too if I arched like that because it's a shorter range of motion making it much easier to move big weights! ...not srs.

For those who think arching is cheating please reread mels post. It is spot on.

Here's a non miscer bench specialist saying the same thing.

I'd honestly think this is common sense to anyone who has been lifting for a few years.

My experience is that everyone who is on drugs tends to assume everyone else is, too. It's silly, really, a person doesn't have to rationalise it. Just do what you reckon, it's your body, your life. Nobody should turn their misplaced guilt into an accusation.

As I said, natty or not, Thompson is a massive outlier in bench. When she benched 141.5kg, the next best after her at the meet was... 115kg []http://goodlift.info/onecompetition....d=365#current]. Compare with her squat of 145 vs the best that day of 160 (a lifter who did 165 bombed on deadlift), and her deadlift of 190 vs the best of 205. Thompson went 145/141.5/190 for 476.5 vs the 2nd place woman Ivana Horna who went 160/90/205 for 455. At least 30 women outsquatted and outdeadlifted Thompson, but only one woman outbenched her, benching 155... at 134kg, twice Thompson's weight.

Taking out the bench and just looking at the sq/dl totals, you get the first place woman (Horna) doing 160/205 for 365 vs Thompson doing 145/190 for 335. So she'd go from 1st to 6th place. From legend to not on the podium.

If enough people participate in a sport, occasionally you will get a freak who makes everyone go "WTF?" Occasionally, they are freaks in just one lift. In squat and deadlift, Thompson is a great lifter - she pulled more than 3 times her bodyweight, but so did 20 other women that day. In bench she is alegendarylifter.

And as a legendary lifter, she is as I said useless as an example of what a woman can expect to lift. It's as useful as the woman comparing herself to one with cystic fibrosis. Those are different worlds, forget about them.

People who are not experienced being or coaching women lifters should not be speaking here.

I'd honestly think this is common sense to anyone who has been lifting for a few years.[/QUOTE]Not quite sure what point you're trying to make here. His ass isn't even on the bench and with technique like that he won't be able to even bench more weight than he would with a smaller arch and his shoulders retracted... which they aren't at all.

Cherry picked article, never heard of Tim Henriques. If his highlight is a 700 deadlift at 198 then he's not exactly cream of the crop. A point I do agree with is muscle building but if your main focus is chest development there are many alternative forms of benching that will hit your chest more directly that your standard competition or regular flat non arched bench. Larsen press, spoto press, etc...

It'll be okay brother. She provided video against your very strong claims which you seemed positive about. I repped her and negged you. Also a bold statement that women who bench 30lbs more than their bodyweight are all juicing. You're either not very educated on lifting numbers or just train with weak people. Green squares are srs business, I do apologize for making you upset.

Mark Israetel points on spine pressure specifically lumbar and thoracic part is very interesting and i think is more convincing when explained with actual science.

I'm not saying they are doing anything wrong. Just that an experienced power lifter using all the tricks to shorten their ROM, extreme arch, extremely wide grip, is going to post up much higher numbers than someone using a more traditional slight arch/shoulder width grip.

Granted for huge guys the numbers won't change much. But for tiny women at super low body weights the advantage can be pretty significant.

That's not necessarily true. If an extreme arch and wide grip worked for everybody then every powerlifter would be using that technique. It comes down to leverages and what works best for that lifter. There are plenty of people with a slight arch and closer grip that out bench many others with a wide grip and massive arch.

One of the advantages of light weight women is that they are more flexible which can allow them to get into a stronger arch position than someone like me who is well over 100lbs more than them. But regardless just by using a bigger arch or a wider grip does not automatically give you a stronger bench because of a slightly shorter ROM. Some yes, some no.

Probably puts you into the top 5% of men. Advanced doesn't mean average. The average 230lb man is probably +35% bodyfat. If you are 230lbs lean even if you don't train bench regularly you still have a lot more muscle mass than the average joe.

He said closer grip. Not close grip. Closer grip is regular shoulder width. If you look at the extreme women power lifters their grip is as wide as they can physically spread their arms. With arch + super wide grip and tits their rom is like 3 or 4 inches. Probably smaller then their clit in most cases.

Great. They're lifting within the rules and using a technique to lift the most amount of weight possible.

This is called technical mastery

What's your point again?

My point was the point of the thread. How much can a natty female bench is going to be hugely different if they are just benching normal vs extreme powerlifing angles, even though their actual strength probably not that much different. I'd imagine most females top out around 135 but with "enhanced form" ie big ROM reduction could add 40lbs or so.

The number of females who can bench 135 is probably about the same as the number of males who can bench 315. Ie not very many. Probably less than 1 pct of the population. I've never seen a girl bench 135 clean at any commercial gym. 90 percent of them don't even go near the free weights.

That actually sounds about right. At my AM gym there is exactly 1 woman that can crush 135 on the bench and she gets it for 5 or so. She is a genetic freak though, 5'10 with hips and shoulders for days.

She crushes 240 for 10 on the squat with ease.

At the gym I hit at night I have never seen a woman hit 135 on the bench but a few are close (95-115 for reps).
Eat in a deficit to lose weight.
Hit your protein and fat minimums to stay healthy and keep your gainz.
Lift heavy and do HIIT to look and feel awesome.
Use the internet to learn why you should do these things and how to do these things.

The most I've seen a woman bench at the gym is about 115 lbs. And she looked like she weighed 130-140 lbs.
