So far all the deaths have been in third world hovels. As long as people who live real close to water in elevations less than projected storm surges leave (or just move to their second floor), everyone will be fine. The weather channel guy was legit standing in the streets during the eye wall, which is the worst of the storm.

It's not all about deaths. There will be tens of billions of dollars worth of property damage and millions of people without power for days or weeks. Plus, I'm sure there will be a number of deaths from surge flooding or people bring stupid and going outside when they shouldn't be. If it wasn't hyped up, would people board up their windows, move to higher ground, evacuate their mobile homes? If not, there would probably hundreds or thousands of more deaths.

The only thing that killed the storm was staying on cuba's coast for so many hours. If it hadn't done that it would still be packing 150+ mph winds (gusts to probably 200 mph) still.
