We get the same thing here with cyclones. But from an outsiders point of view this seemed quite scary, remembering back to Katrina and the one that just happened in Houston. Figured you guys were going to take a hammering. Even if overhyped that's definitely worse than what we get here.

Glad it seems to be less than expected.

The reason it died down quickly is that Naples knocked the fkng chit out of it. Godspeed Naples brahs. Key West got hammered from early reports. A few deaths.

Looks like Miami-Dade is out of it right now. Got power back for like 5 seconds, hope that means they're working on local grid, or they just shut it off until winds die down. I'm gonna take it as a sign this area will be back with power soon, last place I was at during Wilma was 2 weeks with no power.

They said that Naples will most likely not get the storm surge they were expecting. Thank goodness

So what? The people still died as a result of the hurricane. When a tornado rips though a trailer park in Oklahoma and kills tons of people, do you say it was only bad because the people were idiots and decided to live in a trailer instead of a well built house in Tornado Alley? At the end of the day, every death will be a result of the storm and some kind of human mistake (they should have done this instead of that).

Two things you should also keep in mind:
First, Irma's brush across the tip of Cuba took away the brunt of the storm's impact. And second, that Florida -- and chiefly south Florida -- is like the most hurricane hardened metropolitan community on the planet (and most certainly in the U.S.).

Irma's impact in the Florida Keys, however, has yet to be determined.

Palm beach county

We made it. Hardcore winds, rain, lots of tornado warnings before it got here

Watched a palm tree snap

Lost power

It's still gusting way hard out here. Sat outside drinking wine

By shutters do you just mean plywood? Or do you have some kind of window protection that wouldn't make your house dark if you're leaving them up that long?
