If you're looting for fun/personal gain then a gun in your victims hand may deter you. If you're looting food to prevent starvation or otherwise save your life then it's probably not gonna be enough, you're dead if you don't go for it anyway so you might as well try to kill someone and take their chit. And now everyone around you is a potential threat too.

Barter for goods? Do you think there will be some local open marketplace? All the thugs will have already combined into a huge army. They will be in control. There will be no 'bartering'. Part of being a prepper is determining how you'll protect yourself, your family, and your stores. Duh!

Typically you prepare some hideaway/shelter away from dense population.
You have a bug out bag and a means to get to the hideaway/shelter. E.g. an old reliable 4x4 or motorcycle, some water, rations, etc.
Everything you need is there.

brb answer every visitor with the business end of a 12ga
brb setup ambush scenarios
brb eliminate any potential threats

You would likely get killed a lot sooner because in such a world people will be scum looking to take advantage of others whenever possible and you'd be an easy target.

And just lol if you think you can join a group of marauders. Everyone would be distrustful of everyone else, except family, brotherly friends and their dogs.

Not to mention guns and ammo would probably be the most valuable things you could barter with.

In studying economic collapses, id add women (as prostitutes) and gasoline to the list of most valuable goods. Gasoline being nearly as valuable as food. Women being about 4th valuable behind guns, food, and gasoline.

Ammo is heavy. You can't just carry around 10,000 rounds. Even storing it is risky as it begins to fail due to moisture. Having a rifle/shotgun is a handy solution but I don't think anyone believes it's a long term plan. The long term plan would be to find a civilized society and hope they let you join. Or in the event of total economic collapse, break into a library to get books on how to identify edible plants and animals and try to survive until society begins to reform.

How would running away defenseless be an advantage to running away with a concealed pistol at your side? You can still run with a gun, the gun just gives you the added benefit of being able to defend yourself if you were cornered with no escape, and had no other option but to defend yourself or your family...

Oh and btw a BIG difference between retreat and surrender m9. Being completely defenseless and handing over your chit is surrender. Throwing your money one way and running the other is more like retreat.

Yep, prostitution, pimps and their gangs would be incredibly rife. It would probably become as lucrative as the drug trade.

The only thing about gasoline and other fossil fuels is that they would become very limited or run out entirely after a few months. People would have to stop using cars.

The scarcity along with short life span is what makes gasoline valuable. When Germany collapsed after WW1, we saw the role of energy is post industrial collapses.

True I guess but how viable is this really? Unless you have stores and stores of vegetable oil (and other oils), you wouldn't really be using them to run a car because it would be very inefficient I imagine, and you would need them foremostly to cook food and heat your home through a generator or something.
