Last time I went to Guitar Center was for a shockmount for my microphone they said only a special kind would work and that it was $50, I get home and buy one off Amazon for $10.
Interesting. I want to actually get a feel for the guitar and physically hold it before I buy it though.

That is the eternal dilemma right there.

First thing IMO would be to look on craigslist, also pawn shops are good too cause you can also barter and use online prices against them

Also why I stress buy online off a reputable seller, one who say isn't trying to unload crap, trying to make an honest profit, etc.

Cause then you don't like the feel of guitar worst case scenario you send it back and keep on looking, or maybe even whatever problems might be cheap/easy fixes.

I have a friend, playing guitar all day as long as I've known him (going on 19 years) and won't hesitate to buy a guitar online, it's not as big of a deal as you make it so long as you use a little common sense.

Don't feel comfortable shipping back something as fragile as a guitar. Then the seller can just say it was damaged during shipping. I definitely want to buy in person for that reason alone. Definitely do not want to buy used from a pawn shop either.

Hey as a guy who's been there and done that twice I'm just trying to make you aware of other options you have, but if your heart is set on getting bent over by Guitar Center then go for it

Good idea IMO is maybe get an acoustic to help with that itch, you can mess around with it til you find a nice electric.

That way you'll be more accustomed at that point, and it's easier to find an good acoustic, much more "moving parts" with an electric.

Regardless, your best bet's to take your time.

I had gotten a nice bass, but some of the frets buzz and that sucks, but at least now I know more things to look for.

Did get the bass for relatively cheap though so I'm probably gonna try my hand at fixing it, rather than throwing it out or trying to sell it to somebody.

This x100. No one size fits all for guitars, its VERY subjective. But it might be better to try to find a respected locally-owned shop. I have an awesome guitar shop near me, much better service and knowledge than a Guitar Center or similar. Especially helpful if you're just starting out and have no idea what you're looking for.

Ok opie this may be wayyy over your head but what type of music do you want to play?

With electric it's mostly about the pickups.


Single coils will sound more clean bluesy. Double coils sound more harsh metal /hard rock.

Jimmy hendrix / Stevie ray vaughn where on single coils.

I own the exact prs you like and its a good guitar. Try and find one used though. I ended up getting mine for 450 a couple years ago. I got lucky and found it at a music shop but ebay is always a good place to shop around.

ive had pretty good luck buying from ebay actually. Most people ship with either a hardshell case or its packed properly by ups or fed ex and has fragile all over it. If anything happens during shipping you should be able to get your money back too. 750 is the absolute upper end for that model though. I have seen them go as low as 400.

it just makes it easier in th elong run, i have also never practiced looking at the fretboard, from day 1
meanwhile you have people with their eyes glued to their fretboards, hunched over looking like they have no confidence in their playing at all

Good point! Will check out the small shops too. There are tons of those smaller music shops around me. Will keep an eye out for good condition used guitars.

Don't feel comfortable buying used off ebay. Will definitely check out used ones at a reputable shop though. Want to inspect the body for any damages or defects. Yeah that 24 custom looks hnnngg. I really like the finish on it.

Not sure what you decided on, but don't get an amp. Spend $700 on a guitar and the rest on a DI box/preamp (look up Scarlett 2i2. Great for entry level) and an amp sim.

Went and checked out a few guitars in person. Thinking about going with a prs custom 24. It really felt good to hold. Other guitars that had a narrow and thick neck did not feel that good to slide my hands across. I really like how flat and wide the prs guitars were.

Didn't much think about that. You can find Line 6 PODs for relatively cheap. I spent about $800 on my HD Pro when it first came out, but you could probably find one for $300 used.

As a matter of fact, this is a pretty insane deal. HD Pro X with FBV Shortboard for $305.

It's def all about personal preference. But take heed to what I said about an amp sim and such. In 2017 it's way more practical if you have no intentions of plugging in anywhere aside from your place.

Jealous here, I've been playing for 13+ years and I still use my $329 guitar I got like 10 years ago. I put $200 pick ups into it, but still.

You really don't need to spend $500 on a guitar if you're a beginner, just pick up some beginner guitar for a couple hundred bucks to see if you actually enjoy playing and learn some stuff before blowing a $1000 on equipment.

Like $700 on guitar for someone who has never played? What's the point. If you have the money, it's yours to spend, but it doesn't make sense to me.

I always used to buy the cheapest stuff when I started a new hobby. But I always ended up regretting it and upgrading a few months into it. I never regretted buying mid range gear, not even once. But regret buying cheap every single time.

I say this as my cheap ikea desk wobbles around as I type. Never buying another thing from that chitty store again.

Buy a Music Man AX40. It has a neck which is much praised for it's comfort. Apparently the design stems from a guitar which Edward Van Halen had in the 80's. He'd used his guitar so much it had naturally worn to the movement of his hands up and down the neck. It was scanned and reproduced to create the Music Man EVH which later became the Axis when Edward left the brand. Today the AX40 is a budget version of the Axis. The AX40D has the same pickups as you'll find in the Axis model but is considerably cheaper.

Yeah man, that's all. I got rid of all my amps years ago and haven't looked back. With an amp sim, you can get a million different tones. BIAS FX by Positive Grid is a good mid range amp sim. Tons of presets are available. PM if you have questions.

Yeah, it runs through your computer. The interface requires drivers to be downloaded on your computer, but you plug headphones straight into the interface, so the sound will be much better than what you'd hear if the sound was running through your computer. My recommendation would be to buy two entry level monitors to hook up to your interface.
